Site outage update

Hi everyone,

First and foremost: sorry for the loss of usual service over the last few hours.

To explain what's been going on: shortly after 10pm last night, we started receiving a large amount of spurious (i.e. automatic, rather than human) traffic. This is known in the trade as a denial of service attack: one in which a person, or organisation, deliberately floods a website with requests for pages, with the intention of overwhelming its servers and preventing bona fide users from accessing the site.

It goes without saying that we're doing everything we can to repel borders and keep the site up and running. We'll post on our social channels with any further updates (we're over here on Facebook and Twitter, if you don't follow us already), and in the meantime, thanks, as usual, for bearing with us.

I was wondering that BeyondTheWall

youarekiddingme · 12/08/2015 12:06

I've changed my password. They might access it but it won't open any other accounts I own.

As for motives? probably some abusive twat who's wife left him after MN announced LTB!

PosterEh · 12/08/2015 12:08

That Twitter feed is hilarious. Mate you're hacking into a parenting website not CTU.

youarekiddingme · 12/08/2015 12:08

Same here How Confused

BeyondTheWall · 12/08/2015 12:09

This guy is très boring anyway. At least last time we had "you iz all bitches" posts from Justine Grin plus, shutting down a website overnight/morning when the large majority of posters are in the UK is not the most intelligent hack ever!

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 12:09

So he is messing with the big red button then...

patrishiare · 12/08/2015 12:11

This site does have a reputation for misandry?

cozietoesie · 12/08/2015 12:11

Welcome to the Brave New World, folks - and it sounds as if a good few people using this site need to review their security in any case. (Indifferent security being what these people mainly rely on.)

Mumsnet is a big site but by no means unique - and eg for all you know, your online bank(s) could have had umpty low level DOS attacks (some of which might have been smokescreens) already this week but you just never noticed them.

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 12:11

Oh he has hacked a poster I see.

HowDdo2You · 12/08/2015 12:12

Why did you hack a parenting site?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 12/08/2015 12:13

Perhaps he's set up his own MN account. Welcome strange one. You'll fit right in.

DrankSangriaInThePark · 12/08/2015 12:15

He thinks he's in a movie doesn't he?

Bless.

RattleAndRoll · 12/08/2015 12:18

I've not changed my password on here but it was the same password as two other things so have changed those. If I change it on here then the hacker will know my old and new, (therefore the passwords for the other things) whereas if I change my other things he won't know them. He can have my mn account, I'll make a new one if needs be.

thornrose · 12/08/2015 12:19

I was just wondering which actor would play him when the movie comes out! Grin

MmeLindor · 12/08/2015 12:20

What's the story? Should we change passwords? I already have a separate email account for Mumsnet after the last nonsense.

MiscellaneousAssortment · 12/08/2015 12:21

What a revolting little man (? Boy?).

His tingly willy must be getting off on the 'power' he has. Except his power isn't particularly impressive isn't it? And his timing is silly, maybe he's based in the U.S. or maybe he can only get online to do mischief when his parents are asleep.

I'm holding fire with password changes as it sounds a bit like someone's showing off, and, if he isn't then there's no point in changing passwords until mumsnet have restored order.

Not sure what damage can be done via passwords on here though, beyond a bit of silliness posting as if they're other posters...

BakingCookiesAndShit · 12/08/2015 12:21

Rattle, it's not a great idea to have the same passwords for anything. There's a really easy to remember way of doing an almost uncrackable password which will be unique to every site you log into, which I'll DM to you, if you like?

RattleAndRoll · 12/08/2015 12:22

Yes please baking. Thanks.

twirlypoo · 12/08/2015 12:24

Eh, which poster has been hacked Howdo?

PeekABooPinky101 · 12/08/2015 12:25

Baking could you pm me the info in that too. I don't have all the same, but am awful at passwords in general and this may be the time to get it sorted.....

Charlesroi · 12/08/2015 12:26

Fantastic. I've just been handed the perfect excuse if I start calling everyone a thick fucker. Grin

Thanks son ... err ... Mr Hacker.

MmeLindor · 12/08/2015 12:26

If you hate new passwords - try 1Password app. It's really handy cause you can make the passwords difficult to guess, but you can always access your sites. agilebits.com/onepassword

Indomitable · 12/08/2015 12:27

Baking can I get in on the uncrackable password action too please. Thanks.

Arkkorox · 12/08/2015 12:28

What a silly man.

nearly died from lack of mumsnet during nightfeeds

GreyAndGoldInTheMeadow · 12/08/2015 12:28
