Site outage update

Hi everyone,

First and foremost: sorry for the loss of usual service over the last few hours.

To explain what's been going on: shortly after 10pm last night, we started receiving a large amount of spurious (i.e. automatic, rather than human) traffic. This is known in the trade as a denial of service attack: one in which a person, or organisation, deliberately floods a website with requests for pages, with the intention of overwhelming its servers and preventing bona fide users from accessing the site.

It goes without saying that we're doing everything we can to repel borders and keep the site up and running. We'll post on our social channels with any further updates (we're over here on Facebook and Twitter, if you don't follow us already), and in the meantime, thanks, as usual, for bearing with us.

MNHQ

I've just tried to email you on the contactus email address but it's bouncing back. It's allowing me to send other emails though.

How odd!

It's not, I just checked

How do I know if my username is on the published list?

Let's hope he pisses off the civil services enough to do something about him. Far more serious information could be obtained and hopefully a high prison sentence attached Grin

You should report it as hacked. I just have.

Report
Arkkorox · 19/08/2015 15:48

He's still got one account live.

Report
Mrsmorton · 19/08/2015 15:47

He had hacked some sort of civil service account. I saw it on Twitter but it was a personal one and hadn't been used for some time as far as I could see.

I think people shouldn't be posting to him or about him on Twitter. It's just oxygen for him. His account has been suspended now anyway.

Arkkorox · 19/08/2015 15:38

Depends if the police have his ip etc they could get his adress

Report
PigletJohn · 19/08/2015 15:35

I have a feeling that might cause a bit more effort to track him down.

Arkkorox · 19/08/2015 14:17

misc im going to go and have a snoop. He seems to have gone all quiet.

Apparently a Mumsnetter who he posted that swat team picture to also had armed officers come to her house but I don't know any details, so he's done it twice now.

Anyone know if the civil service rumour is true, would be interesting to know...

On a brighter note, this should get rid of a lot of the people who just sign up for the comps (more chance of winning for me!). Smile

Someone said he has now hacked the civil service Twitter account.

Now that Jeffrey knows the names of thousands of cats and first loves, I wonder what he will do with them?

Now Jeffrey, sending armed police to justines house wasn't very friendly was it? Wonder if his mum knows he's been abusing the emergency services? Hope Justine and her family are okay.
Apparently 3k of passwords have been released. Hope mines on it, I've got no clue what it is.

Seems there has been a fake log in page set up so that when you're being ' logged in' it's actually collecting your details.

Naughty Jeff!

Yes you can reuse the same one, but it is not advised. Consider using a password manager to remember all your passwords so you can use different passwords for different sites or do what MIL does and carefully write them all down in a notebook

I cant remember what my precious password was, as I'd ticked the 'keep me logged in' box. If the advice is to alter the password, how will I know if I've picked a new one, or the same old? (I have a few old faithfuls as I'm too old and decrepit to remember anything new). Will MN let me re-use the old when I set up a new, iyswim?

Yes, all passwords have been voided (also not Justine) - if you're already logged in, you won't notice until you log out (or get logged out for whatever reason) - but then you won't be able to log back in on your current password, you'll have to use the password reset facility to get back in.

So might as well do it now, while you know where the link to the reset password thingy is. I've already done mine.

Have you forced a reset on all passwords Justine?

Yes
