Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

8% of all registered users or 8% of active users? Quite different things that.

Regardless, it has never been the case that both my posts and the op's were the same colour. Originally the op's posts were blue and the user's posts were green.

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 11:09

Well I have colours back - except they're the same one and it's a vile shade of dark green which is atually very difficult to read black text on - at least with my eyesight. I wonder who chose that one because I'm finding that I'm straining to read what's been written on that background. All you need is a distinguishing colour so that use of a dark shade seems particularly unsympathetic. (Although it may just be my own eyes.)

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 05/08/2015 11:10

The custom colour option has gone as it was only used by a very small number of posters (around 8%)

Sorry those options are gone but as a techno numpty I am preening a tiny bit @ 8% .

I didn't know about it until about a year on MN and it made things so much better. Maybe loads of users don't even know it's an option. Or was an option as it appears to be now.

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 11:12

I suspect they didn't, Sparkling. It certainly improved the site.

CainInThePunting · 05/08/2015 11:13

I've logged out and in again and have the drop downs now.

Ugh! That is a disgusting shade of green.

Please God no tickers!

Blowing dust off WMMC as I type...

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:15

It was like the bookmark function cozie. I found that ages after I registered, I bet loads of people don't know about it. perhaps that will be the next thing to go.

NoWeepingBicycleMonkeys · 05/08/2015 11:15

Can we PLEEEAASSSSEEEE have:

Option to receive email for watched threads ONLY when op posts, ppplllleeeeeeeeease!
and
"watched" threads in order of latest posts

Ta muchly Grin

LittleBearPad · 05/08/2015 11:18

My posts are purple on the mobile site and the OP's are pink so I'm a bit confused that Rebecca says there were no optional colours on the mobile site.

I'm not clicking anything in customise as I like my current set up and don't like green. Still grumpy Angry.

MNHQ. Why has this change to automatically opt-in been done and why do you think it's an improvement? Please explain as so far no one so far seems to agree.

LittleBearPad · 05/08/2015 11:20

Agree with Sparkiling most people probably didn't know about it.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:22

Yes, you can't expect new users to automatically know about all the features in Customise. There should be a 15 minute induction video IMO pointing out all the features that make made the site great to use.

overthemill · 05/08/2015 11:27

I am iPad app ( I assume as I'm on my iPad). Where is the 'customise' option? All I have ever seen since March when I got my iPad is a left hand menu called mumsnet talk and under it Home, Active, I'm on, Topics, Discussions of the Day, I'm watching. At the bottom there's a symbol which I think is settings ( like a cog ) and all that does is let me sign out.

So since I've stopped using my iPhone for mumsnet ( and I never use my laptop as I don't remember my log in details) I haven't seen colours for my threads. Would like that back please and I used purple for my posts as a suffragette colour so I'm one of the 8%c posts by MNHQ have never been highlighted in blue on my iPad and yes I updated it to the latest version 8 point something or other recently

RealHuman · 05/08/2015 11:28

Which nobody would ever watch.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:29

Compulsory prior to registering Real. Grin

Thurlow · 05/08/2015 11:29

That green is REALLY loud... Can it not be a more subtle colour? It is surprisingly difficult to read black text against it.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:30

There would be a test at the end and only 100% pass rate would be allowed to register. Smile

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2015 11:30

Ok so I've to highlighted colours back and I'm back to one continuous thread, instead of pages (yaaay!)

But is there an option that lets me have a different highlighted colour to the OP?

At the moment both my posts and the OP's posts are the same colour (green).

I don't mind what colours they are, as long as they're different to each other.

Apologies if this has already been answered Blush

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2015 11:30

got highlighted colours back - not 'to'

overthemill · 05/08/2015 11:31

Oh yes and I can't bookmark on iPad app so I have to scroll down whole thread which is really really annoying

RealHuman · 05/08/2015 11:32

I was going to cite my patented look-somewhere-else-and-sing method of ignoring compulsory videos, but I can get on board with an entrance exam Grin

ViewFromThe4thFloor · 05/08/2015 11:37

"Why has this change to automatically opt-in been done and why do you think it's an improvement? Please explain as so far no one so far seems to agree."

I think this thread may already contains the answer:

"I didn't know about it until about a year on MN and it made things so much better. Maybe loads of users don't even know it's an option."

"Agree with Sparkiling most people probably didn't know about it."

"It was like the bookmark function cozie. I found that ages after I registered, I bet loads of people don't know about it. perhaps that will be the next thing to go."

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:40

Worra looks like green for you and the OP is as colourful as it's gong to get (on the laptop at least)

LittleBearPad · 05/08/2015 11:40

But that doesn't answer my question View in any way Confused.

The fact that people didn't know they could set up different colours is not actually relevant to the automatic opt-in to TIW. Mnhq just cocked the colours up whilst making thus ridiculous change.

Crosbybeach · 05/08/2015 11:41

Where's the bookmark function??That sounds good.

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 11:44

In Customise Crosby. Tick it. Then when you are on a thread and you get to the last post you have read, you can bookmark it so that next time you go to the thread it starts from there.
