Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

I'll live with the green - it's better than no colour at all!

Thanks MNHQ. Back to wasting hours online... the ironing will have to wait.

ShuShuFontana · 05/08/2015 10:40

hahahah... moving ....I came back in to say thanks for the highlights, and to mention the green ...it's not me, but at least I can see where I was

Can we get a colour choice back at all ?? I liked my tasteful two tone purples.

RebeccaMumsnet · 05/08/2015 10:40

Hi all,

HUGE apologies, the highlight options should be back for you all now Blush

Let us know if you have any further issues

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 10:42

Thanks RebeccaMN but will there be any other colour choices than green?

HarlotOTara · 05/08/2015 10:42

Mine aren't what do I do?

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 10:43

Go into Customise and tick the boxes Harlot.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/08/2015 10:43

Mnhq please put it back so that the op and my posts are two distinct colours. I don't mind not being able to choose colours if it means the sites goes down and crashes less often but two distinct, yet muted colours would be better than the current shade of violent green.

Please also reinstate the option to limit the number of TIO posts that appear on the page. It used to be that I could limit it to 5 per thread and now it seems to be every post since I was last on a thread which means scrolling through scores of posts to check them all.

FruSirkaOla · 05/08/2015 10:44

Thank you. But the OP's posts and mine are the same colour (I just looked on another thread). So we're all green at the moment? Grin

Sparklingbrook · 05/08/2015 10:46

We will be accused of being rude and ungrateful in a minute. Grin

FruSirkaOla · 05/08/2015 10:48

Grin Grin

ouryve · 05/08/2015 10:49

Well, that's an improvement, though I do miss being purple.

View simplifying software is all very well, but not at the expense of useful functionality.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 05/08/2015 10:49

I wouldn't worry too much about a poster who can't see how combining the features of TIO and TIS into Watched Threads might be the first step towards removing TIO and TIS. Lack of imagination there Grin

ShuShuFontana · 05/08/2015 10:50

it's a really horrid green.

what about anyone who has colour vision issues? 3)

CainInThePunting · 05/08/2015 10:51

MNHQ my highlighting for OP and my own post are not back and the drop downs to reapply them are not available still.

Shock Sad

Am I going to have to dig out my copy of Who Moved My Cheese?

DonkeysDontRideBicycles · 05/08/2015 10:51

Oh good OP easily spotted once again, thanks.

HarlotOTara · 05/08/2015 10:54

I have ticked the boxes for being emailed and having messages put in watching list, saved it and also logged on and off and nothing has changed

RebeccaMumsnet · 05/08/2015 10:57

Hi all,

The custom colour option has gone as it was only used by a very small number of posters (around 8%) and it wasn't available on the mobile version at all. The removal of highlight from customise was an error on our part, apologies for that.

The default colours are green on desktop and grey on mobile (as ever).

We hope that helps to clear it up a little.

Stormtreader · 05/08/2015 10:57

So glad to have the highlighting back! Thanks guys and gals :) I can deal with all the same colour for now :)
Unless view is reading, in which case "unacceptable, the status quo, no changes 4 life, strop" as expected Grin

Thurlow · 05/08/2015 10:59

Cain, I currently have a copy of Who Moved My Cheese sitting on my desk Grin Grin

I'm trying to remember what it looks like on the mobile site - are the OP and your own posts the same colour?

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 10:59

As you're here, Rebecca

I note that the options to move between the various Mumsnet 'styles' have also gone from Customise. Does that mean that the styles other than Mumsnet New are also to be phased out?

ViewFromThe4thFloor · 05/08/2015 10:59

"I wouldn't worry too much about a poster who can't see how combining the features of TIO and TIS into Watched Threads might be the first step towards removing TIO and TIS. Lack of imagination there grin"

I am imagining this is a first step towards automatically getting subscribed for notifications for every thread you view. And tickers.

RatOnnaStick · 05/08/2015 11:01

I'm staying purple. I don't like the idea of the OP being the same shade as me. I just have to remember never ever to customize anything again. And take the sodding tick out after each thread I post on...

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 11:02

...tickers...?

Dear Goodness - I'll have to check my stocks of gin!

FruSirkaOla · 05/08/2015 11:03

Only 8% of us used the custom colour? I am surprised. Ah well, at least something is better than nothing!

cozietoesie · 05/08/2015 11:03

I doubt you'll actually remember, Rat. Sorry.
