Heads up - Improvements to watched threads coming

BeccaMumsnet · 04/08/2015 12:52

Hullo everyone,

Just a heads-up: we wanted to let you know we've been working on some changes to improve the way our 'watched threads' option works, and we’re going to be releasing them today.

As you know, at the minute, if you want to receive an email notification when someone posts on a thread you yourself have posted on, you have to check the ‘watch this thread’ box when you post your message. From today, the box will be automatically checked.

Our thinking was that because, in the immortal words of Ferris Bueller, , it can be easy to miss replies to threads you’ve posted on, so it’d be useful to keep you updated as a matter of course.

Some crucial points:

  • Fear not: we absolutely won’t email every time someone posts after you have - and if you’re still looking at the thread, we won’t mail you at all.
  • You’ll only get ONE email after you’ve left the thread, to say it’s been updated.
  • If the idea of receiving any such emails makes you want to weep/tear out your hair/throw a toddler-style tantrum on the kitchen floor, DON’T PANIC: you can do a one-time-only opt out, by clicking on customise at the top of any thread, and unchecking ‘Auto-watch threads I start’ and/or ‘Auto-watch threads I post on’.
  • If you’d like to adopt a mix-and-match policy and be alerted to replies on some threads but not others, simply uncheck the auto-watch options in customise, and check the ‘watch this thread’ box underneath the message box on the thread you’re interested in.

Hope all of this makes sense, and sounds useful. Do shout if you've any questions (we know we can rely on you Wink)

Thank you all Flowers

I don't know about anyone else, but I seem to be stuck with both the OP's posts and my posts in a dark green colour. I'm very short sighted and find that it's actually quite hard to read highlighted posts quickly now. The contrast isn't good enough.

Goodness knows what it's like for someone with a visual impairment, not just myopia (which is not yet bad enough to count as a visual impairment).

UptheChimney · 06/08/2015 15:56

And to add insult to injury, I'm still getting threads I've posted on added to my "Threads I'm Watching" list, even though I've customised so as not to have that happen.

This really is a cockup. I can't see what improvements there are? Only going backwards.

Still, I suppose it'll make me break my MN addiction. It's pretty unreadable for me now, so I may have to deregister.

magimedi · 06/08/2015 16:02

It's now changed to a very pale but bright green for OP's threads & a dull pink for mine.

Better than it was, but I still am not keen on the green.

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 16:04

And it has changed without going into custom Hmm but as it has only inverted my colour choice and switch the pale purple to a fractionally deeper shade I will live with it and probably adapt eventually but i would like to be stubborn and just say it is wrong

DarkEvilMoon · 06/08/2015 16:05

Actually make that lavendar colour it is not pale purple...

emotionsecho · 06/08/2015 16:05

Have MNHQ explained why they think these changes are such a good idea and what the rationale behind them is?

As the view from site users is evidence to the contrary that these changes are neither wanted, needed nor welcome it would be appreciated if MNHQ could actually do their users the courtesy of engaging with them on the subject.

Oh, hellfire, now my colours have changed without me changing anything in settings. I don't mind the purple colour for my posts, but that green is horrible.

Happinessismymiddlename · 06/08/2015 16:09

All my colours have changed...

Used to have lilac for OP's posts.
Olive Green for mine.

Now I've a weird shade of bright green for the OP. It's too bright - actually it's a revolting colour!

SqueezyCheeseWeasel · 06/08/2015 16:10

MNHQ - I hate the fact that TIW and TIO are now the same thing. What is the point in that? Zero logic there. I dislike the new lurid green. These improvements are about as pointless as it gets. I hope you didn't spend a lot of time and money planning and executing them.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/08/2015 16:11

Crikey. That green is lurid.

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/08/2015 16:13

I don't actually mind a few changes

There are some clunky bits and redundant features on here that could go. I'm just not sure why you haven't started with those? Confused

Bakeoffcake · 06/08/2015 16:13
Shock

Hating the lurid, vivid vile green.

I'd like my tranquil pale lavender back please!

cozietoesie · 06/08/2015 16:14

I've just recently (I've been away form the boards) developed a pinky-lilac for mine and a green colour - not the same one as yesterday I think - for the OP.

Might I note that yesterday's new Customise did not contain any options for Mumsnet New and Mumsnet Classic?

I guess they forgot to add those at the time. Wink

FenellaFellorick · 06/08/2015 16:16

the colours are dreadful and I for one don't actually want my tio and tiw to be one and the same.

There was purpose to them being two separate lists.

it's bloody awful.

Can I ask, when you decide to change things, do you first of all take a moment to ask whether the users of the site even need or want a change? Change for change's sake is pointless.

Perhaps say ok, this is what we're thinking, this is how it would work, this is how it's different to how things are now, would this interest you...

rather than ta-da, here it is, bear with us for a month while we sort out the many ways in which it's cocked up...

Thurlow · 06/08/2015 16:19

My eyes, that green Shock

emotionsecho · 06/08/2015 16:19

For whose benefit are these changes MNHQ?

SoupDragon · 06/08/2015 16:20

Hurrah! I am lavender again!

The green isn't great but it is an improvement on Sludge.

Twinkle186 · 06/08/2015 16:21

My colours have gone suddenly in the last hour or so. I used to have bright pinky-purple for OP posts and pale lilac for mine. I didn't touch anything in customise I swear Sad

I don't like the green. What's going on MNHQ?

MovingOnUpMovingOnOut · 06/08/2015 16:23

I like the lavender :)

Don't like the retina burn off the green though

Twinkle186 · 06/08/2015 16:23

Ooh, ok so I've got my lilac back! Grin

I suppose I could try to get used to the green for the OP. Hmm

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 06/08/2015 16:23

So let's see what colour I am now when I post.
