I don't like being without the car (I mean, I can manage but if given a choice, I wouldn't be without it!) - it's just so much easier than public transport

i can reluctantly see the point that MN currently need`all the financing they can get their hands on. I still don't like 4x4s though. But I can't actually see the ads either!

HappyDaddy · 11/08/2006 15:55

Why don't you ask MN?

CountessDracula · 11/08/2006 15:57

why do you think I posted under Site Stuff??? Durrrr

Do they read this then? I thought it would be better to email them direct?

Smart arse.

CountessDracula · 11/08/2006 16:00

why thanks, it is quite smart today as it 'appens...

Yes they do read, Justine started the new thread on adverts in response

HappyDaddy · 11/08/2006 16:04

Ok, fair enough. Carry on, nothing to see here.

JoshuaandChloesmummy · 11/08/2006 20:45

Sorry, but i cannot believe some of the insults being thrown around here.

Now as i said early i own a 4x4, and believe it or not it uses LESS fuel the my old mondeo, and i can see MORE out of it then my Mondeo.

As for calling 4x4 drivers twats, well im very offended! I have my 4x4 for a reason, we are not all twats!!

As for higher tax/insurance maybe we should split the UK in two groups. Group 1- people who live in towns and have 'pretty' 4x4s. They get taxed up to high heaven.

Group 2- those who live in the Countryside and NEED them. They get taxed at normal rates.

4x4's always used to be a car for people in the Countryside. They suit our lifestyle, and we need them for when we go across fields, or along icy lanes.

Now just because there are a people who see them as status symbols, and who do drive badly it doesnt mean we are all like that.

jampots · 11/08/2006 23:57

i live in the town and have a non-essential 4x4 but its my choice and it runs on lpg which is far greener (and cheaper) than diesel or petrol - so how should I be taxed?

honeyCHEld · 12/08/2006 11:06

I got run over by a JCB when I was 2 - do I win??? (wheels went on either side, in case you're wondering)

Personally I think MN need all the money they can get right now, so I don't have a problem with the advert. And I drive a Toyota Prius (or Pious as I prefer to call it), before you ask [emoticon for sanctimonious smirk] and I recycle, blah blah blah

honeyCHEld · 12/08/2006 11:12

oh, and before the non drivers out there complain, I live in the middle of nowhere and there's no bus. at all.

ferdinand · 12/08/2006 11:34

surely the 4x4's dont drive themselves do they??? i see arseholes driving all sorts of cars, not just 4x4s.....its just cos they are bigger you take more notice.....

and for what its worth, i think that women should have a driving test annually cos half of them are awful!!! (.....and i am a woman, but i consider to be one of the better half!!!)

WideWebWitch · 12/08/2006 20:01

Another reason to hate them, that CRAP ad for Land Rover on at the cinema atm, god it's puke making.

Wordsmith · 12/08/2006 20:17

Is this a thread about MN advertising or about 4x4s? I have opinions on both.

On the advertising: if you don't like it, don't click through. Simple as that. If it pays the bills at MNHQ, so what? It's not for illegal drugs or missiles, and never would be, for as we know, missiles have no place in child-rearing at all do they.

On the question of 4x4s - I don't like them and can't see the point of them unless you do a lot of off-roading. Some friends of mine bought one when child no 2 came along because it would be 'better' for making the 6x year average trips down the M5 to their caravan in Cornwall. I think they drive at around 90mph most of the way - last time I looked there weren't very many fords or pot holes on the M5. However they had to give up shopping at their usual supermarket because the bloody great pantechnicon was too big and cumbersome to park in the multi-storey.

On a slightly more serious note: the auntie of a friend of mine was killed when a 4x4 crashed into the side of the car in which she was a back seat passenger. The accident wasn't the 4x4's fault - the driver of the auntie's car had failed to see a crossroads on the country lanes they were travelling on. However, at the inquest last week my friend heard that a) if the other car hadn't been a 4x4, the auntie probably wouldn't have been killed, just injured and b) if the other party hadn't have been in a 4x4 she (the driver) and perhaps her two children passengers probably would have been injured. (I think they escaped relatively uninjured.)

So there you have it. Arguably safer if you're in a 4x4, lethal if you argue with one. take your pick.

MarvellouslyMilitantPeachy · 12/08/2006 20:27

Yeagh they're a pest in cities- since when was MN only open to city dwellers hmmm? Would ahve been quite a sensible choice back in rural somerset trekking round the fields building floatts all the time....... variety of people on here you know!

Seems to me, that if we want the site to survive, we can't be picking and choosing adverts! can't have it both ways perhaps?

Can I just say to the lady who was getting worked up about 4x4ers being labelled twats..... I was the one who used the t word, but I wasn't slagging off 4x4 drivers, I was slagging off shite drivers of all vehicles. Re-read my posts on the subject and b-r-e-a-t-h-e

SofiaAmes · 15/08/2006 05:58

I am always amazed at the intolerance that people can have for something that they might not understand. (sort of what racism is based on) Why is it acceptable to call people who drive a car that you don't like "cretins." Surely it's behavior that we wouldn't expect from our children, much less grown adults. There are many reason why someone might drive a large or a small car and the world would be a more peaceful place if people didn't try to impose their own personal beliefs on others without a really strong basis for doing so.

My dh drives a 4x4. He also lives in the city. However, in addition, he drives into the country every weekend to pick up his children and spend time with them. Once he was able to manage it logistically, he sold his works van (he is a builder) and uses the 4x4 as both a works vehicle and a family car. Not to mention that a few years ago he hit a deer on the motorway at 70mph with dd and ds in the car. Thank god he was driving a huge 4x4, because if he had been driving my very politically correct teensy city sized car, they would all be dead.

CaligulaCorday · 15/08/2006 06:35

LOL at this thread. Dislike of 4x4 equates to communism and racism. (At the same time.)

Classic MN.
