Is this a thread about MN advertising or about 4x4s? I have opinions on both.
On the advertising: if you don't like it, don't click through. Simple as that. If it pays the bills at MNHQ, so what? It's not for illegal drugs or missiles, and never would be, for as we know, missiles have no place in child-rearing at all do they.
On the question of 4x4s - I don't like them and can't see the point of them unless you do a lot of off-roading. Some friends of mine bought one when child no 2 came along because it would be 'better' for making the 6x year average trips down the M5 to their caravan in Cornwall. I think they drive at around 90mph most of the way - last time I looked there weren't very many fords or pot holes on the M5. However they had to give up shopping at their usual supermarket because the bloody great pantechnicon was too big and cumbersome to park in the multi-storey.
On a slightly more serious note: the auntie of a friend of mine was killed when a 4x4 crashed into the side of the car in which she was a back seat passenger. The accident wasn't the 4x4's fault - the driver of the auntie's car had failed to see a crossroads on the country lanes they were travelling on. However, at the inquest last week my friend heard that a) if the other car hadn't been a 4x4, the auntie probably wouldn't have been killed, just injured and b) if the other party hadn't have been in a 4x4 she (the driver) and perhaps her two children passengers probably would have been injured. (I think they escaped relatively uninjured.)
So there you have it. Arguably safer if you're in a 4x4, lethal if you argue with one. take your pick.
