Who is up for a protest outside Random House/Vermillion (who publish that book) TOMORROW? It will be in London. Possibly wearing gags (silenced by xxx).

Please add your name here and I'll CAT you.

petition is

here

wannaBe1974 · 09/08/2006 11:58

yay that's ds' birthday... that might be nearer yeah,

foxinsocks · 09/08/2006 11:59

thanks

edam · 09/08/2006 12:10

Please feel free to CAT me!

Petition is great - and I've signed - but we need something to keep the media interest THIS WEEK. I know thrashing ideas out is what we do best - kind of the whole point of MN - but I believe this will be helpful (see Justine's post below). Can't say more on here for obvious reasons.

wannabe think you have a great point regarding a demo
it would make mnetters look like a bunch of loons
and seemingly targeting "we all know who"

signed your petition
good luck
xxx

surely there are journos on mn
cant they just keep writing on the freedom of speech subject
and pushing it through their papers

ZippiZapata · 09/08/2006 12:17

I think the way to go is through the pressure of the internet community..it is spreading like wild fire and concentrating more on the free speech issue rather than the baby feeding aspect..

interesting to see the number of male techies writing on the subject

I think it will be in the weekend tech supplements and maybe business etc ie a wider and possibly more influential audience

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:19

Hi

CountessDracula · 09/08/2006 12:20

I will be at work

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:20

Whoops.
I am new to bounty but live really close to random house so can come there if this goes ahead.
I feel so strongly about this case.

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:21

whoops again
I am new, from bounty, haha

edam · 09/08/2006 12:21

We need an event to create a news peg so that journalists can keep writing about this - you can't write a follow-up without something to follow-up. Please help MN and CAT me!

OP posts:
edam · 09/08/2006 12:24

Hey Ava, that's great, thanks.

We need dozens of MNers to sign up to make this happen!

I take all the points about different ways to take the issue forward, and they are fab, but to keep the story rolling this week so we can continue to highlight the issue, we need to create something visual for print and broadcast media. Please help!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 09/08/2006 12:25

petition westminster and stage campaigns like ffjustice
I could wear a superwoman suit
edam you go as wonderwoman
cod can go as a fish
etc et all

but dont target you know who in front of her publishers

ps trying to lighten the mood a bit

JoshuaandChloesmummy · 09/08/2006 12:26

I think since nobodys statement was issued people seem to have shifted opinion a bit. I think people are thinking that maybe this is a hate campaign against her.

I feel that we really need to focus on the free speech thing, and put that right at the front. Obviously we need to make nobody back off as well, but we need the public behind us.

Read this article and the points raised by members of the public:
\linknews.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5253602.stm\BBC article}

CaligulaCorday · 09/08/2006 12:27

We'd only look like a bunch of loons if

a) you think a demonstrator is automatically a loon and

b) we look like a bunch of loons in RL (I do today). But I live in hope that my fellow mumsnetters will make the effort to de-loon for a demo, if that is necessary.

JoshuaandChloesmummy · 09/08/2006 12:28

Oh that didnt work!! news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/magazine/5253602.stm

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:29

very true, it will be lost in all the new news stories unless something else happens.
Though also, word of mouth is powerful and will have less sensational but maybe more important long term effects. I for one will be raising this at all the toddler and soft play groups we go to, and hope it changes some opinions.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 09/08/2006 12:30

on second thoughts
we could make a stand somehow by being our alter egos mn names

i could go as dsw (just need a curly dishevelled wig and a trackie}

edam you dress up as a piece of cheese

catch my drift

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:31

I can arrive in a conservative outfit, complete with baby bump and breastfeeding my 1 y.o if that helps. Not a loon, just a normal mum!

AvaLou · 09/08/2006 12:32

I find it sad some of you are not taking this seriously.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 09/08/2006 12:34

avalou I am being serious and trying to come up with some ideas
even if there are OTT and daft
that is the way I am
I am trying to think of someway of helping

fairyjay · 09/08/2006 12:35

It is difficult for many of us to get to London at short notice. I've pencilled 15/11 in my diary
Could we not do something at a local level - say at 6 different locations in the country, where perhaps we could do a sponsored silence or something (gagged!) - to make the point that someone is trying to silence ordinary mums.
Could be beneficial, as maybe our dh's would sponsor us to be silent - thus helping mn's funds!
Just trying to come up with ideas - I know they may not be great!

Quootiepie · 09/08/2006 12:39

personally i think a demo would look a bit hoolaganish (not a word i know, butt you get the idea). Specially if there isnt that many who turn up... it will be a media joke. Handing in the petition in a large group would be better IMO- although if maybe we got a large group and patroled the streets of London with matching tee-shirts or something saying "Right to freedom of speech" and "mumsnet.com" on the back, and got signatures for the petition that way? Can you have a few petitions and join them?

Quootiepie · 09/08/2006 12:40

my word, that post is appauling. Excuse bad spelling and grammer! BFing on lap you see...

fairyjay · 09/08/2006 12:42

I am just getting the impression QP that we need to do something pronto to keep the impetus whilst, whilst planning something slightly more longterm. Unless I'm reading too much into some of the messages
