The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:21

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

  • The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

  • The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

  • MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

  • Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

You'vecattobekidding you can get onto Active from the homepage. Look to the right of your screen, you have the little MN talk box and there is a link to Active there. What you can't do is get to threads I'm on which I have gone on and on about further down the thread so poor Helen is probably sick of me. I was a tad confused by the lack of a dropdown for talk too though I suppose most of the topics are in the other menus.

oldsilver · 06/06/2013 21:20

I'm on Firefox on the craptop and have the bitten "T" with the secret Offers drop down box.

I also used to go straight to TIO clicking one button from the homepage. Could the purple "Talk" button on the homepage have a simple drop down reading:

Threads: Active | I'm on | I'm watching | I started | Last 15 minutes | Last hour | Last Day / Customise | Unanswered messages | Getting started | Acronyms | FAQs

Without any naff pictures or any related info - just a straight list?

tribpot · 06/06/2013 21:32

The Nav Bar should, now, in general, be less "flicky"

Nope. No noticeable improvement. (Chrome on Mac OSX 10.7.5)

LackaDAISYcal · 06/06/2013 22:11

It's definitely less flicky on firefox now but still too big and in yer face

@Maryz

Oh, that's great. I'm on Chrome on some sort of computer atm.

I can pass my mouse over without the box opening. I only need to hover for a split second to see the dratted gurning child, but I can run the mouse up and down the screen safely.

Do I detect just a smidgeon of contentment, Maryz?

Ooh, there's a thread about this? Excellent.

The nav bar is a lot less irritating now, although still a little bit trigger happy on a tablet. Probably down to my fat fingers though.

The pics are rather off-putting. Even if you were to put a pic of the cutest baby in the entire world on my profile I think they would be off-putting.

Hope you had a lovely holiday, Helen. Did you go somewhere nice?

HarumScarum · 06/06/2013 23:22

The delay before the menu drops down is great, thanks! I was going mad inadvertently setting it off all the time before.

StripeyYogurt · 07/06/2013 06:50

I don't mind it. :)

So long as it is ok on phone too - I have to use it in browser on phone as app wont let me pm

I like it now that the pics don't jump out at me.

Oh good. Glad it's less irritating now.

And thank you, yes I did. Went to Turkey

@Fuckwittery

Would I be alone if I said I like the new navigation bar, have had no trouble with it (on chrome on PC or safari on ipad). Mn was starting to look a bit dated imo.

However there was definitely an option to click into threads I'm on from the home page previously, because you could hover on talk.

not read all the thread so apologies if that's been clarified.

Thanks, Fuckwittery. You're not the first to point that out. We're looking into that.

I'm with Indith, I'm missing the easy access to Threads I'm on.

Before, I used to go to mumsnet, several times a day hover over "talk" and then click "threads I'm on".

Now I have to actually click on talk, wait for the next page to load, and then click again on TIO.

I know it only takes a few mili-seconds longer, but the extra click does feel like an irritating barrier, and especially as I do it so many time a day, waiting for all those extra page loads most be taking - oooh - weeks out of my life if you add them all up together, considering the amount of time I spend here!

When you say, "I used to go to Mumsnet, several times a day hover over "talk" and then click "threads I'm on".", aufaniae, do you mean that you used to go to the home page?

OP posts:
aufaniae · 07/06/2013 13:11

Hi Helen :)

Yes, I meant the home page. On a previous upgrade, you introduced a menu that appeared when you hovered over "talk" (At least that's where I think it was - using it has become so automatic I forget exactly!)

When you hovered over it, a "threads I'm on" link appeared (along with others - no idea what they were as I never used them!).

This meant you could get straight to TIO.

Now, you have to click, then click again, instead of hover-click.

HTH :)

aufaniae · 07/06/2013 13:12

But actually it doesn't have to be the home page, it was from the menu so presumably accessible from every page.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 07/06/2013 13:19

I've decided I like the navigation bar, now the drop-downs are a bit less jumpy.

I like the way it brings up relevant talk boards and content links next to each other. Instead of going straight for Talk, I'm actually exploring the rest of the site & finding out just how much useful stuff there is out there!

I do think ICBINEG's amazing Gruffalo cake should be the food pic instead of spaghetti dog, though.
