The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

70 replies

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:21

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

  • The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

  • The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

  • MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

  • Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:29

Does it? Oh dear Blush

(Actually not feeling desperate at all; just come back from my hols, so really quite chilled and jolly).

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:37

@KansasCityOctopus

get rid of the stupid gurning pictures, they're annoying and horrible.

Aw, we're sorry you don't like them. We're going to let them "bed in" for a bit because we think that, once folks stop clicking on them by accident (because of the jumpiness glitch - see our OP), they'll be significantly less annoying.

But they're not set in stone. We can change 'em, and may well regularly update them as time goes on.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:02

@Maryz

I genuinely feel the ticked "keep me logged in" button is the most serious issue. I feel this has probably security implications for vulnerable posters and should be an urgent matter.

In fact I'm considering starting an AIBU about it, to get the opinions of all those who don't use site stuff.

I hope you had a good holiday, btw Smile

We hear you, Maryz, we promise. We're just trying to get to the bottom of various related stuff first. We'll update you as soon as we can.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:17

@Maryz

Oh, good idea. You could have a very stylish Siamese for S&B. And luffly kittens and puppies for baby and child.

Noooooooo (dog person)

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:20

@Owllady

I have really bad PMT and they are annoying me so much that I want to slap the pregnant woman pulling a stupid face Angry I wouldn't slap her obviously as that would be very wrong

It must be raspberry leaf tea in her cup. Hideous stuff. Just the sight of it was enough to send me into spontaneous labour...

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:40

@Indith

I don't like that I can't click straight onto threads I'm on from the homepage. You could before (I hope, either that or I'm going mad). Now you have to click on talk and then click through. Why does talk not get a little hover of its own with threads I'm on, I've started etc.

Do you mean the actual homepage, Indith? Or the Talk homepage?

Don't think we've ever had links from the actual homepage to Threads I'm On. But there is a link on the Talk homepage - and every single other Talk page - to Threads I'm On: if you look below the Nav Bar, underneath the big black Mumsnet Talk, there are two lines of blue links and Threads I'm On is in the second line, second in from the left, next to Active.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:52

@Tee2072

Local link asks me to pick my local rather than remembering what it is.

Please consider this a formal complaint from MN Belfast. Grin

Shock And duly considered.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 11:57

@Indith

The actual homepage Helen. I could have sworn on the old style you could hover over talk and it get onto threads or active or whatever from there.

There is of course the serious possibility that I have lost my marbles.

Oh, now you're making me doubt myself!

If it helps, you can get to Active from the homepage by clicking on the Active link in the middle of the line of links at the bottom of the Discussions of the Day box.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 13:11

@mistlethrush

I could swear that I'm getting the drop downs flashing up even when my mouse hasn't been (that) near. Particularly common is the 'offers' one that doesn't seem to have a home so hovers underneath 'pregnancy' and around 'talk' of 'Mumsnet talk' - why is this one here and how are you meant to find it if you don't know that it is there (apart from when you hit 'threads I am on and it decides to pop up anyway). At least the pop downs are going away again quickly now - but having clickable ones would be preferable.

Yes, we're very very very very very aware that the drop-downs are very easy to activate by accident. That's one of the things we're working on sorting right now. Please bear with us.

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 13:12

@ChaosTrulyReigns

Betcha glad to be back, eh, Helen?

I'll bet there's a dent in your desk.

I'm thrilled Smile

Does the cool pack have gin in it?

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 13:52

@Blatherskite

OK, I've just had my first 'pop up without me clicking on anything Persil baby massage advert'

That sort of stuff will have me leaving MN. I cannot stand those sorts of ads!

Where was that, Blatherskite? Doesn't sound right...

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 14:19

@ICBINEG

sorry - its a thumbs down from me....I liked that MN was so text based...

although I might change my mind if you used my cake photo for something

OMG, you MADE that?

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 14:27

@Blatherskite

I'd clicked on a thread from the 'most popular' tab. 3 or 4 seconds after the page opened, the video appeared and started playing itself. I had to click to close it down to see the thread.

Hmm. That should def not be happening. Can you click on the thread again and let me know if the same thing happens?

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 14:55

@Blatherskite

I did Helen. It didn't but the advert wasn't on the page this time either.

OK. Let's hope it was a temporary glitch. If it happens to you again, please let us know pronto!

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 19:20

@babyheave

I don't have a problem with the pictures - I think they're just fine.

What isn't so good is where the links end up over the pictures so in some cases you can't read what they say or it looks like bad design. That happens on Reviews, Life and Style and Pregnancy.

Pictures, yay! Links over pictures, bad juju.

Erk at pics over links. What browser are you using, babyheave?

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 19:51

@babyheave

I'm using IE9

Mme thats a bit unfair - I'm not complaining about the changes. Big links, pictures, new log in - all good.

The way My Mumsnet has disappeared and overlapping links on pictures are things that need to be fixed, not random complaints. Changing where things are and not telling people so they have to ask does generate needless threads.

From experience HQ know that any changes result in a load of crying and pant hoiking - so why not give warning so people know in advance what the changes are and where things have moved to?

Great - that's helpful, babyheave. We'll check out the IE9 situation as soon as we can.

And we do hear you...

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 19:52

@MmeLindor

Welcome back, Helen. I don't want to complain, I just want to say

THIS TOO SHALL PASS

At least it isn't as bad as when you changed to New Mumsnet

Ha! Nothing is as bad as when we changed to New Mumsnet

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 09:22

Morning all.

Quick update for you on what we've been able to release as a fix this morning (in addition to the stuff we fixed yesterday).

  • The Nav Bar should, now, in general, be less "flicky"

  • The Find Your Local Mumsnet link should now automatically take you to "your" MN Local, if you've already chosen one.

We know there's still a bit more to fix. We'll keep updating you as soon as we have any more news on that front.

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 10:17

@Tee2072

Helen, I just noticed that there is something blocking the 't' in Mumsnet and the 'T' in Talk on the talk home page. There appears to be a hidden link on top of it for offers? The two 'Ts' look bitten!

Ooh, criminy - that's not good. What browser are you viewing with, Tee?

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 10:23

@Tee2072

I'm using Chrome, Helen.

And it's not just the homepage. It's all of the Talk pages.

OK. We can't replicate that in Chrome.

Is anyone else using Chrome and seeing the same as Tee?

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 10:31

@Tianc

What tribpot said about the namechanging taking longer.

I use different names for special topics or RL interface, and can end up switching several times a day, often just for one reply or because I change and then think better of opening my gob.

Used to be able to go into My Mumsnet from menu bar on any page; now have to go to Talk front page, then through several layers. I think it's only a few clicks worse than it used to be - but actually I think this is a feature you should be making easier to use, not harder.

Yes, we know about this - and it wasn't deliberate. It is a glitch (see our OP).

We're hoping to have the MyMumsnet link back up soon.

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 12:23

@ImTooHecsyForYourParty

So, Helen. Next time one of you turns to the others in the office and says "hey guys, how about we do a bit of a revamp of the site?" the rest of you are going to leap up and beat them to death with your keyboards, aren't you?

You may think that, ImTooHecsyForYourParty

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 12:24

@Tee2072

Tianc I have no idea what you are talking about. Why do I need soothing tea and you all what?!?!

Helen It's sort of like a problem I had previously with the layout of the top menu. It's fine in Firefox, though. So maybe Chrome just hates me? Grin

Aha! Yes, should have thought of that. Chrome doesn't like MN when you zoom in...

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 12:40

@Tianc

Blush

Thanks Helen, that'll teach me to RTOP!

But can I take advantage to ask for a streamlined namechange?

Same number of security features, of course, but perhaps appearing as an option immediately after the password page (under Private Profile)?

And with a clickable list of one's user names? This info is currently available by a further click and then C&P, so the change would have no effect on security but big effect on convenience.

Pretty please...

Thanks for that suggestion, Tianc. It's a good one. We'll def have a think about it.

HelenMumsnet · 06/06/2013 14:56

@HeartsTrumpDiamonds

Just an update on IE9 -
  1. The drop down menus for Pregnancy, Life & Style and Reviews are still hard to read because some of the words words go across the photos.
  1. The "Local to You" boxes within the drop-downs in Pregnancy, Baby and Child almost completely block the pictures.

I don't really mind the photos themselves. The one of the woman at work - that's exactly what I look like at the office Grin

Thank you - that's v helpful.

We think we've worked out what's causing all that and have found a fix. We should be able to release it fairly soon.
