The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:21

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

 • The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

 • The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

 • MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

 • Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

What tribpot said about the namechanging taking longer.

I use different names for special topics or RL interface, and can end up switching several times a day, often just for one reply or because I change and then think better of opening my gob.

Used to be able to go into My Mumsnet from menu bar on any page; now have to go to Talk front page, then through several layers. I think it's only a few clicks worse than it used to be - but actually I think this is a feature you should be making easier to use, not harder.

Tianc · 06/06/2013 10:29

And yes, Tee, we all know you know we all know you.

Yes, we know about this - and it wasn't deliberate. It is a glitch (see our OP).

We're hoping to have the MyMumsnet link back up soon.

Thanks Helen, that'll teach me to RTOP!

But can I take advantage to ask for a streamlined namechange?

Same number of security features, of course, but perhaps appearing as an option immediately after the password page (under Private Profile)?

And with a clickable list of one's user names? This info is currently available by a further click and then C&P, so the change would have no effect on security but big effect on convenience.

Pretty please...

Tee2072 · 06/06/2013 10:51

Tianc I have no idea what you are talking about. Why do I need soothing tea and you all what?!?!

Helen It's sort of like a problem I had previously with the layout of the top menu. It's fine in Firefox, though. So maybe Chrome just hates me? Grin

Tee2072 · 06/06/2013 11:14

Okay, ignore me. It's how far zoomed in I am. Has nothing to do with the site.

ImTooHecsyForYourParty · 06/06/2013 11:36

So, Helen. Next time one of you turns to the others in the office and says "hey guys, how about we do a bit of a revamp of the site?" the rest of you are going to leap up and beat them to death with your keyboards, aren't you?

Tianc · 06/06/2013 12:01

'Cos you normally splutter your Brew when I mention namechanging for privacy, Tee? Wink

We know you don't care. That's cool. Some people do.

Aha! Yes, should have thought of that. Chrome doesn't like MN when you zoom in...

Tee2072 · 06/06/2013 12:46

Tianc you seem to have me confused with someone who gives a fuck if you name change or not. I couldn't care less and I certainly don't sputter about it.

SoupDragon · 06/06/2013 12:54

Personally, I think "streamlining" the namechanging facility is not a good idea. It makes it even easier for smooth sockpuppetry and trolling.

Tianc · 06/06/2013 13:06

I'm not sure a couple of extra clicks, as at present, is enough to stop someone trolling or sock-puppeting. (But then I don't get why people go to the effort of behaving like that full-stop, so am not the best person to ask.)

But it's certainly a nuisance for legit daily longterm users.

Tee, I'm sorry if I've mistaken you for someone else. I post occasionally about cyberstalking and online security, and there's someone who seems to post indignantly on almost every thread about it saying, "Meh, none of this matters people. Everyone knows who I am and about my DC."

Apologies that I've confused you with that person.

Tee2072 · 06/06/2013 13:15

That is certainly something I might have said Tianc because I do think name changing is a waste of time and I am very open about who I really am and who my son is. There is no privacy or anonymity these days and I wished more people realized it.

However, I certainly couldn't give less of a fuck about what others do and, TBH, I don't even recognize your name so if I did say it to you? It meant nothing to me. Sorry.

Soup Yes. That. Name changing = trolling. It's the one thing MN could change to make trolling less prevalent but won't due to the false sense of anonymity around here.

Frankly I think it's the one truly scary thing about MN. How many people think it's some sort of private board and post who the hell knows what on here.

Just an update on IE9 -

 1. The drop down menus for Pregnancy, Life & Style and Reviews are still hard to read because some of the words words go across the photos.
 1. The "Local to You" boxes within the drop-downs in Pregnancy, Baby and Child almost completely block the pictures.

I don't really mind the photos themselves. The one of the woman at work - that's exactly what I look like at the office Grin

SoupDragon · 06/06/2013 14:36

The point is: why make it easier? I don't think the current system inconveniences any more than a handful of posters. Most people do not feel the need to name change 57 times a day.

There is a vociferous minority who want to ban name changing completely. Making it easier is not a good idea.

Thank you - that's v helpful.

We think we've worked out what's causing all that and have found a fix. We should be able to release it fairly soon.

The issue of the 'T' on the 'mumsnet talk' which comes up with a hidden 'offers' drop down is one that I've been mithering about since yesterday. I agree, on chrome it is still there - the Ts are slightly affected by it being there, but the worst thing about it is that it is too low down so is activated when you move between 'Talk' and 'Threads I'm on'. Its still there. And if you did want the 'offers' drop down there is nothing to show that you should hover there to access them...

I do like the less-flickiness of the dropdowns though - quite a relief that. Thank you!

Mistlethrush, does the problem resolve if you zoom out?

OP posts:
Indith · 06/06/2013 16:17

Oh yeah I hadn't noticed the offers dropdown over the T before. I use Chrome too.

No it doesn't resolve itself if I zoom out. I just zoomed to titchy tiny writing and all that happened was that it went over the top of the "Mumsnet" instead of over the "Talk".

Ok. We've managed to replicate this on one of our screens now, so we do see what you're talking about. We'll try to work out what's causing it - and get cracking on a fix.

YouveCatToBeKittenMe · 06/06/2013 17:06

I'm sure its already been mentioned but too lazy to read whole thread
I don't like that I cant get straight to active convo's from the home screen. Why doesn't it have active, threads I'm on, threads I'm watching etc on a drop down box like the others?

I'm trying to save on mouse clicks to help the environment (all that friction) so don't like having to click twice
I genuinely feel the ticked "keep me logged in" button is the most serious issue. I feel this has probably security implications for vulnerable posters and should be an urgent matter.

In fact I'm considering starting an AIBU about it, to get the opinions of all those who don't use site stuff.

I hope you had a good holiday, btw Smile

We hear you, Maryz, we promise. We're just trying to get to the bottom of various related stuff first. We'll update you as soon as we can.
Update re "keep me logged in".

We're going to fix it so that if you uncheck the "keep me logged in" tickbox, we will "remember" you've done that and, next time you log in, it will automatically know not to keep you logged in.
