The new Navigation Bar (at t'top): the "official" thread

HelenMumsnet · 05/06/2013 10:21

Hello. There are ruddy millions quite a few threads in Site Stuff at the mo about changes/glitches/weirdy stuff related to the release of our new Navigation Bar (the big blue bar at the top of the page that helps you find all the various bits of Mumsnet).

So, for clarity's (and sanity's) sake, we're starting this thread to keep everything in one place - and have just one thread where you tell us what's not working for you and where we update you on what we've fixed/are fixing etc etc.

Right then...

A couple of quick answers/updates for you right now:

  • The PM Inbox flag/blog/"you've got a PM" icon is now back. Apols for having inadvertently made it disappear.

  • The jumpiness/flickiness of the Nav Bar in general: we're working on sorting this now - and hope to have a fix released by tomorrow.

  • MyMumsnet: this will reappear on the Nav Bar at some point in the next three days or so. In the meantime, you can find MyMumsnet here.

  • Keep me logged in. We're looking into this - and will update you soon.

Any more Qs/probs/moans/peans of praise (hopeful), do please post them here.

I said this one one of the other threads, but a sticky to let folk know changes were coming / what was coming and some FAQs about what was new and where to find things that had been moved around would have been fab - and saved a lot of your time.

New stuff is great. Moving things around so no one can find things, not so great.

I'm also curious - there are a heck of a load of glitches for something moving from test into Live. Did they all work in test?

p.s. Yes you could get into TIO from the main home page in the last incarnation :)

nenevomito · 05/06/2013 15:24

Not to be totally negative. I really like the fact that you can now log in with any of your usernames regardless of which one you are currently using. Very handy for the next time I am on a MN piss meet up and forget what I'd changed my username to when half cut on Gin as I was on the train down.

Especially since someone wouldn't let me know what I'd changed it to when I asked very nicely. Grin

I hate the floaty over bar at the top. Please make them clicky links instead. Ta!

Blondeshavemorefun · 05/06/2013 15:43

Also from other thread and have shuffled myself to here as requested by mnhq Grin

I too missed the red box - I hope all is back to working order - thought my box isn't red or flashing - does that mean no one loves me anymore and not sending me messages :( or is mine broken :(

Waits patiently for a message to be sent :)

stickyj · 05/06/2013 16:35

I always go straight on to TALK then "active". Why do they all come up so close together, don't like it. Also they start from the last post so every time I want to read it, I have to press"flip" to start at the beginning. Anyone having this problem or just me?

exexpat · 05/06/2013 16:54

After all the work you've put in on MN Local, did you really mean to make it impossible to go straight to your local site? The only way I can find it from the new layout is to search for my local site every time - is this really how it is meant to work? I'm sure there used to be an MN Local tab/button before. The local site is full of tumbleweed rather quiet as it is, so I can't imagine this will help.

tribpot · 05/06/2013 17:01

Tee - yep, spotted that but was requested to repost here, so I did! Not to mention I wanted to make the point that the PM system is dreadful - who on earth was consulted on 'imaginative ways to make it worse'?

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2013 17:08

I second UniqueAndAmazing's DD for the baby picture. She would be perfect.

ICBINEG · 05/06/2013 17:28

See this is why I LOVE MN....there is ABSOLUTELY no way I could post boasty smug pictures of my cake triumph in RL....and get away with it Grin

It was my first outing with the 'make grass' icing nozzle....but it definitely won't be my last!

hmm pregnant 'woman' doesn't look under age to me...but certainly doesn't look like average mnetter age either...

that's one cute cute baby unique

Tee2072 · 05/06/2013 17:41

Ah, I see Tribpot!

exexpat, that has been pointed out, quite loudly, by the Local Editors. Like we're not having enough trouble getting people to local...

babyheave, they never seem to test anything. Remember when the 'new' local went live?

Sorry, Tech, but it's true. I can't recall a single improvement to the site that hasn't been a total disaster. Do you beta test? I'd be happy to be a beta tester as well as whomever said that up thread.

ItsYonliMe · 05/06/2013 17:42

The little girl giving the thumbs up in the photo looks like a very precocious and annoying child in that photo (I'm sure she's not in real life, ahem)

Sparklingbrook · 05/06/2013 17:51

Shea also appears to have her ears pierced Yonli. Shock

BalloonSlayer · 05/06/2013 18:42

I could put up with the annoying drop down bar constantly dropping down uninvited were it not for the cheap, cliched, abysmal, unimaginitive, frankly ugly photos on it.

It looks like you sent your YTS trainee (or whatever they are called these days) to the photo library for half an hour with a list of cliches to find a photo for.

BIWI · 05/06/2013 18:54

Welcome back Helen! (Bet you wish you'd timed your holiday to be back in about two more week's time ... Grin)

tribpot · 05/06/2013 19:13

I said on one of the other threads, I hope MN haven't parted with any cash for this site 'redesign'. If so they have been ripped off.

nenevomito · 05/06/2013 19:17

I don't have a problem with the pictures - I think they're just fine.

What isn't so good is where the links end up over the pictures so in some cases you can't read what they say or it looks like bad design. That happens on Reviews, Life and Style and Pregnancy.

Pictures, yay! Links over pictures, bad juju.

Erk at pics over links. What browser are you using, babyheave?

Thanks for getting message box to normal . Hands all at MNHQ some headache pills !

MmeLindor · 05/06/2013 19:36

Welcome back, Helen. I don't want to complain, I just want to say

THIS TOO SHALL PASS

At least it isn't as bad as when you changed to New Mumsnet

nenevomito · 05/06/2013 19:50

I'm using IE9

Mme thats a bit unfair - I'm not complaining about the changes. Big links, pictures, new log in - all good.

The way My Mumsnet has disappeared and overlapping links on pictures are things that need to be fixed, not random complaints. Changing where things are and not telling people so they have to ask does generate needless threads.

From experience HQ know that any changes result in a load of crying and pant hoiking - so why not give warning so people know in advance what the changes are and where things have moved to?

Great - that's helpful, babyheave. We'll check out the IE9 situation as soon as we can.

And we do hear you...

I'm on another machine now and it works fine in IE10 even when I resize.

nenevomito · 05/06/2013 20:02

p.s. Cool, I'll shut up now then Grin
