MN allows racism to stand

amillionyears · 13/11/2012 14:50

I have reported it 3 times today, 1 before 9am.
Heard nothing from them.

OP posts:
OtterPandemonium · 14/11/2012 10:42

How does one go about nominating a thread for Classics? Grin

OtterPandemonium · 14/11/2012 10:45

Or "Quote of the Week" at least. My personal favourite:

MmeLindor Tue 13-Nov-12 17:10:11
Someone called me a fruitcake once.

I had her deleted, on account of me being from Dundee.

Was nasty racism, it was.

SoupDragon · 14/11/2012 11:20

Obviously, they merit deletion (for being personal attacks) but, given that the thread wasn't about French people but about the failings of Mumsnet and the person being attacked had made no mention of being French, we didn't see any racist intent in the posts.

MNHQ deleted them for personal attacks, not racism.

A very mild personal attack by MN standards, mind you.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 14/11/2012 11:30

I was quite surprised that HQ even accepted that being a personal attack really.

MrsWembley · 14/11/2012 11:33

I wish I could remember what I'd said that could be read as a personal attack.Hmm I alawys consider mys

MrsWembley · 14/11/2012 11:34

Oh fuck!

I always consider myself to be pretty mild really.

Apart from the occasional fuck...

SoupDragon · 14/11/2012 11:38

If you email MNHQ, they will tell you IME.

GreenyEyes · 14/11/2012 11:39

MrsWembley think back...

Did you by chance call someone a 'silly billy'?

A 'daft narna' perchance?

A 'bit of a wally'?

Y'know, the kind of phrase that MNHQ now seem to agree is a 'personal attack' Hmm

GreenyEyes · 14/11/2012 11:39

Fwiw I think this OP is a wind up merchant

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 14/11/2012 11:42

But 'mad as a box of frogs' doesn't even contain a fuck! I'd have thought it could even be affectionate. As in "Ooh, that Hullygully, she's mad as a box of frogs..."

I think HQ should have left it up unless the person who was actually being addressed was really upset about it. And she seemed to be too busy being upset about MN being meh2 to worry about frogs in boxes.

AlienRefluxovermypoppy · 14/11/2012 12:24

How can 'mad as a box of frogs' be a PA, but naming two posters, as racists isn't?!

Or does someone have to report it?

AlienRefluxovermypoppy · 14/11/2012 12:25

I almost wish she was greeneyes would make much much more sense.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 14/11/2012 12:32

Just looked at her previous posts & she's really not though, is she?

I'm almost tempted to start a thread in Site Stuff about what does & doesn't constitute a PA.

Fenton · 14/11/2012 12:58

I'm sure amillion isn't deliberately on the wind-up.

I think I remember her saying before (when it was being discussed about po) that she knows she has no sense of humour (I think she was being quite serious) - perhaps this has contributed to her misunderstanding of the frogs comment?

I really don't think she's doing this to get backs up - although I can understand that this is what is happening.

HelenMumsnet · 14/11/2012 13:15

@EmpressOfTheSevenOceans

I was quite surprised that HQ even accepted that being a personal attack really.

OK, just to clear this one up...

A personal attack is an attack on another poster that focuses on their person, rather than their opinion.

It doesn't have to include swearing. Although it might.

So:

"You are a cow, HelenMumsnet" = personal attack

"You are a fucking cow, HelenMumsnet" = personal attack

"Your opinions are ridiculous, HelenMumsnet" = NOT a personal attack

"Your opinions are fucking ridiculous, HelenMumsnet" = NOT a personal attack

BOFingSanta · 14/11/2012 13:18

What about "That makes you sound like a poo-poo head, HelenMumsnet"?

AlienRefluxovermypoppy · 14/11/2012 13:21

Yes, but mad as a box of frogs?? Is that really an insult even? Esp, when she was !!

HoneyDragon · 14/11/2012 13:21

What about,

I think Bof was correct in her assumption you are a poo poo head

Is that a stealth attack by proxy or is it allowed? Grin

FunnysInLaJardin · 14/11/2012 13:25

I thought the official line was 'you sound like a twat total idiot and here's a convincing argument why'

HelenMumsnet · 14/11/2012 13:28

@BOFingSanta

What about "That makes you sound like a poo-poo head, HelenMumsnet"?

Depends on the context, BOFingSanta. Only a poo thread, for example...

HelenMumsnet · 14/11/2012 13:30

@AlienRefluxovermypoppy

Yes, but mad as a box of frogs?? Is that really an insult even? Esp, when she was !!

"You are as mad as a box of frogs" = personal attack (unless context makes it clear it's meant affectionately or summat)

"Your opinions on this issue are as mad as a box of frogs" = NOT a personal attack.

EmpressOfTheSevenOceans · 14/11/2012 13:30

I get that, Helen. And thank you for coming on the thread.

If I want to express negative opinions I'm very careful to use Justine's "Your post makes you sound like [simile of choice] and here's why."

But honestly, mad as a box of frogs? When it wasn't even the froggee who objected?

Does that mean that if we were messing around in the Puddle and I called State or Bonkey or someone norty, and some random poster noticed it & objected, it would get deleted?

HelenMumsnet · 14/11/2012 13:31

@HoneyDragon

Even if I am a poo poo head, it's a personal attack to call me one.

So, I could be as ugly as sin but "You ugly cow, HelenMumsnet" is still deletable.

HoneyDragon · 14/11/2012 13:33

Aaaaaaw Helen, you is bootiful and luffley.

HelenMumsnet · 14/11/2012 13:33

No, cos (hopefully) we'd see that the context was affectionate and jokey and not personal attacky
