Madmouse's open letter to MNHQ about the treatment of those with disabilities on MN

Dear MNHQ

I joined MN when I was pregnant with my lovely ds. That heady autumn with bump before such words as NICU, neonatal seizures, brain damage, cerebral palsy, speech delay, special school entered my vocabulary.

That was 5 whole years ago - and all that time MN has been a part of my life. Got a lot of support from my ante- and postnatal buddies and from experienced SN mums. Gave back where I could. Became ill with PTSD, found the MH threads, recovered, started to give support on the MH threads.

Now I've come to the point that the only thing stopping me from leaving MN is that I would let down people on the MH threads. Other than that your (MNHQ) behaviour today has been an eye opener and a bit of a final straw.

MN has become, like RL, a place where disabled people and people with disabled children are not safe, not treated equally and not extended the same courtesy and respect as those without disabilities.

What happened today is just a tip of the ice berg. Day in day out threads appear with the same old theme. AIBU to use this disabled space because my baby's maxi cosy is too big and the P&T spaces are full, AIBU to use the wheelchair space on the bus (those two appear weekly by and large), AIBU to think it's nice to be disabled because you get lots of benefits, AIBU to think disabled people have it easy, AIBU to think I should have a free car too seeing as that I pay taxes.

It goes on and on and on. And none of it is ever challenged other than by a small group of us who do all this fighting in RL too - because it affects us and our children.

There is such thing as discrimination. And you do have a duty to stamp it out. Hand off moderation is no excuse certainly seeing how quick you were to delete 2shoes thread when some of us started fighting back against the endless threads of threads which in turn are copies of last week's threads.

I am very disappointed. And I think you have some thinking to do.

Best wishes

I am fucking livid about this.

MN jumping on and mocking people who complain - justifiably - about offensive posts and threads.

Think I am done with MN.

amillionyears · 22/06/2012 11:26

Justine,herself,the boss, has joined it.

amillionyears · 22/06/2012 11:27

Its all in the name of "freedom of speech"
They dont care who gets hurt.

Presumably though, not themselves, then they turn and become hypocritical

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:27

Nice

Mintyy · 22/06/2012 11:28

I think you are over-reacting.

It was obviously Bof's way of showing a little sympathy to HQ who are getting it all angles atm.

dottyspotty2 · 22/06/2012 11:28

Site stuff is for stupid things I've seen mocking threads like that in chat but come on.

ohchristFENTON · 22/06/2012 11:29

madmouse - There's no way Bof would have started that thread to attck or ridicule you, - absolutely no way. It is not directed at you, therefore MN joining in is also not an attack on you.

Please do stay - take a look at your own hover line, - you have many supportive friends here. I'm sorry you have been upset.

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:32

I disagree.

At its best that thread is misguided and ill judged. At its worst it is goading and mocking and MNHQ have jumped on too.

Am so confused and angry with MNHQ atm.

They have one rule for one, one for another.

Some areas are more - shall we say - agressively moderated than others?particularly when there are legal implications.

dottyspotty2 · 22/06/2012 11:34

I meant site stuff was for serious things not stupid things

landofsoapandglory · 22/06/2012 11:34

MNHQ were bloody quick to post on it weren't they? I guess they have no staff problems today!

Don't leave MadMouse, don't let the bastards win!

ShirleyKnot · 22/06/2012 11:34

The thing is that there's always something going off here. It's either this or the feminist board or the doghouse or...whatever, there's always something kicking off on site stuff.

To think that BOF is having a good old dig at this thread is just not right.

ohchristFENTON · 22/06/2012 11:34

I don't know Badvoc, there have been a lot of very strange threads and posters with new unusual names, handfuls of them, coming here to cause a stir. I hate to say the old "MN is weird at the moment" clich - but I really think it is and I imagine that's more what that thread is about.

ASillyPhaseIAmGoingThrough · 22/06/2012 11:35

Well I suspect f 4 j will attack mm today or 4 July so they will be busy with that.

ohchristFENTON · 22/06/2012 11:37

No Bof wouldn't do it. We were both on a thread late one night recently and briefly but completely misunderstood each other (over nothing at all) and she was clearly concerned that she had caused upset (she hadn't) . She's just not the sort to deliberately offend.

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:37

Strange posters aside. MNHQ are behaving in a very questionable way wrt to sn/sen boards IMO.

As land says...no staff issues today!!! Hmm

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:41

OK.

Well, she has offended me.

And I am not easily offended!

Is it not enough that MNHQ seem to think that the sn/sen boards are there solely to "educate" others - no matter how offensive/abusive/bigoted they are - and that we should be happy to do so, no matter what these people post and how much they hurt us??? Show my another area of MN where this happens/is tolerated!!!!

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:42

mintyy Poor old MNHQ eh?

ffs....

peggyblackett · 22/06/2012 11:42

I really don't think it's a thread specifically about this thread madmouse. For a start Paggy is posting on it, and she is a strident supporter of the SN community. I think you may be reading too much into it. Have a and come back.

Mintyy · 22/06/2012 11:43

Yes, I do feel for them a bit at the moment.

Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:44

"strident supporters" can be misguided peggy

And - giving credit to the posters on it - that is what that thread is.

ShirleyKnot · 22/06/2012 11:46

Bloody hell Badvoc.

peggyblackett · 22/06/2012 11:47

OK, we're just going to have to disagree on that one Badvoc . I know that Paggy takes no shit on disablist posts.

madmouse · 22/06/2012 11:47

No the thread is not against me. It is however a reaction to the fact that some of us have had the audacity to complain about the way threads about disability are handled. And seeing the MNHQ is having great fun on said thread I've now had enough.

OP posts:
Badvoc · 22/06/2012 11:50

well said madmouse Exactly.

ohchristFENTON · 22/06/2012 11:51

Badvoc - you are now being hugely unfair to Bof and the contributors to that thread, - you were the first to draw attention to it here (although madmouse had already seen it I see)

You cannot be sure of the intentions of starting that thread only Bof can - and since she is not here to defend herself why not let it drop for now - don't perpetuate the story that a poster is being unkind to another when you don't know that that is the case.
