Deletions etc

JustineMumsnet · 30/05/2012 19:50

So we've had a get together at MNHQ and we have come up with the following set of actions/proposals, following on from the previous thread:

  1. We will make more effort to be communicative and transparent. This will include the MNHQ duty person posting on the boards more to explain a deletion of a post or a thread and providing more info in cases where we have banned or suspended someone for trolling, so folks know that we are "doing something". We will also try to provide more specific message deleted info - ie more than just because it "breaks talks guidelines" (eg because it perpetuates rape myths etc) (NB this will take a bit of time because it involves tech)
  1. We will aim to be quicker to delete threads that have been or seem to have been started purely to inflame/goad, even if it means we occasionally might make a mistake. This is to avoid the goady threads where an OP is deliberately inflaming, leading to a lot of deleted responses. We will also suspend those who we suspect of being out to deliberately goad and make sure our guidelines reflect this.
  1. We will aim for a lighter touch approach to deletions where discussion is robust but lively and interesting and "attacks" are borderline/very slight/ 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
  1. We will make sure everyone at MNHQ is aware of looking at the bigger picture - not just focus on the reported post - and is clear on what constitutes a personal attack - ie that it's ok to attack an opinion, not ok to attack a poster.
  1. Our policy on trollhunting remains not to tolerate it - so please don't do it, but please do report suspicions to us. That said, we will try to be more communicative on threads where folks suspect a troll - ie we are aware that some people have expressed doubts and we are looking into it/ we have checked this out and have no reason to believe this person is a troll/ we agree this person is not what they seem and have deleted the thread.
  1. We will hold regular chats/q&as about moderation issues and policy - monthlyish? - where we can have a good debate about any particular bugbear or issue and one of us will discuss policy and why we do what we do...

Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Nonetheless we think people have raised some good points and we hope all trying the above will make the board better - if not we'll try something else Smile - thanks for all the input.

Please do post your thoughts/observations (disclaimer - I'm off out shortly so won't be around to respond tonight but will be back tomorrow)

Nothing exciting here... apart from only having 10 and a half days until I don't have to work anymore yip yip yippee Grin
congratulations to everyone else on their celebratory stuff (including Getorf's curtains)

HoneyDragonWearingLederhosen · 31/05/2012 12:52

I am not having the sex, the babies, the weddings, nor even the curtains

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 12:54

[lightbulb] maybe hully and getorf can have the sex, spice things up?

I've been wanting to have a good friends discussion with Getorf, now I'm rewatching it and have decided that Ross is a Twat of the Highest Order.

Hullygully · 31/05/2012 12:54

But they were on a break.

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 12:56

honeydragon - you were voted as Dictator of MN by yourself recently. surely that's enough? Also, when you get excited you tend to immac babies' heads. it's not good for anyone.

KatieMiddleton · 31/05/2012 12:56

Oh I'm not having the sex. Like I said, I only need to do it the once to get up the duff. The sex has been done and finished some time last Feb... and it's not dh's birthday or Christmas for ages.

I am doing the sitting in my pyjamas, eating carbs on the sofa.

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:07

He IS isn't he, abs.

I can't watch it without being beady eyed for any Ross misdemeanours. Even the first series where he is all sweet (supposedly). Control freak.

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 13:12

Totally. I might start a thread and drag showy in as well. Examples of his weird control freakery:

  • discouraging Rachel from pursuing her dream job so he can "have a girlfriend"
  • objecting to her dating people, when he can't be arsed to even ask her out
  • telling Monica not to have a child on her own after she breaks up with Richard
  • at every opportunity, reminding her that they were "on a break"
  • not telling Rachel that they were still married
  • refusing to annul the marriage as it reflected badly on him "three divorces"

One of my favourite episodes is when Phoebe messes with his mind - he's shocked when she says she doesn't believe in evolution, so he spends the whole episode arguing with her and telling her how wrong she is, and at the end she says "but the world's finest minds used to think the world was flat, right, and they were wrong, so this could be wrong" and he really starts to doubt himself and she goes "haha - you're so weak" at the end. Phoebe sees through him.

NormaStanleyFletcher · 31/05/2012 13:14

Thank you Justine

As ever a great response.

It is great that you are mad enough to listen to us

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:16

Yes I love that Phoebe episode - really sees through his whole arrogance and control. You just know that those two would have HATED each other if Friends were actually based on reality (god forbid).

I am a mere apprentice to Showy's genius re Friends analysis. Grin

PrincessPinot · 31/05/2012 13:26

WAH! SHUT UP about Ross. I like him still and you bjullying bjitches aren't changing ma mind.

Olivia I had a snorty snurkle at "hopes for the sex best" :o

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 13:28

Rebecca - nice deleting and message on the fire thread in In The News

Thumbwitch · 31/05/2012 13:29

Sorry, got distracted by Grey's Anatomy.
KM - due mid-October, how about you? Congrats to you as well, btw :)

Ross - nah. He was annoying. But my favourite bit with him in was when he over-whitened his teeth to fluorescent white - that was hilarious! Grin

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 13:34

Seriously Pinot - rewatch Season 1. By the end you will HATE him.

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:34

I spent a few hours loser watching Friends outtakes and documentaries a few weeks back. David Schwimmer comes across as being a really nice bloke in RL - he often slips up when filming and has a really lovely smile when he is not playing Ross. He is a brilliant actor. I still can't watch that bit with the leather pants and paste without roaring. And the routine.

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:35
HRHBumpingFuglies · 31/05/2012 13:36

Very good proposals I think, especially No.1.

AbsofAwesomeness · 31/05/2012 13:37

I once went out with a guy who was (previously) in a relationship with a girl who dumped him for David Schwimmer. She was about 20 years younger than David Schwimmer

PrincessPinot · 31/05/2012 13:43

not listening<

I hope you all watch Episodes, the Matt LeBlanc and Tamsin Greig comedy on BBC2. Fucking hilarious - I actually dribbled last week as I was laughing so hard and so much at one scene that I didn't have time to swallow >ooh err<

MUST WATCH!

BIWItheBold · 31/05/2012 13:45

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:45

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 13:46
