Deletions etc

JustineMumsnet · 30/05/2012 19:50

So we've had a get together at MNHQ and we have come up with the following set of actions/proposals, following on from the previous thread:

  1. We will make more effort to be communicative and transparent. This will include the MNHQ duty person posting on the boards more to explain a deletion of a post or a thread and providing more info in cases where we have banned or suspended someone for trolling, so folks know that we are "doing something". We will also try to provide more specific message deleted info - ie more than just because it "breaks talks guidelines" (eg because it perpetuates rape myths etc) (NB this will take a bit of time because it involves tech)
  1. We will aim to be quicker to delete threads that have been or seem to have been started purely to inflame/goad, even if it means we occasionally might make a mistake. This is to avoid the goady threads where an OP is deliberately inflaming, leading to a lot of deleted responses. We will also suspend those who we suspect of being out to deliberately goad and make sure our guidelines reflect this.
  1. We will aim for a lighter touch approach to deletions where discussion is robust but lively and interesting and "attacks" are borderline/very slight/ 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
  1. We will make sure everyone at MNHQ is aware of looking at the bigger picture - not just focus on the reported post - and is clear on what constitutes a personal attack - ie that it's ok to attack an opinion, not ok to attack a poster.
  1. Our policy on trollhunting remains not to tolerate it - so please don't do it, but please do report suspicions to us. That said, we will try to be more communicative on threads where folks suspect a troll - ie we are aware that some people have expressed doubts and we are looking into it/ we have checked this out and have no reason to believe this person is a troll/ we agree this person is not what they seem and have deleted the thread.
  1. We will hold regular chats/q&as about moderation issues and policy - monthlyish? - where we can have a good debate about any particular bugbear or issue and one of us will discuss policy and why we do what we do...

Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Nonetheless we think people have raised some good points and we hope all trying the above will make the board better - if not we'll try something else Smile - thanks for all the input.

Please do post your thoughts/observations (disclaimer - I'm off out shortly so won't be around to respond tonight but will be back tomorrow)

mme, I will buy it!!!

I go on holiday in just over three weeks!

MrsVamos · 31/05/2012 16:53

OOh, a baby book ? Lovely.

What's it called ?

MmeLindor. · 31/05/2012 17:05

It is not a novel, I am afraid and it is designed to be read in ten minutes so perhaps quite a beach read. It is going to be called "Learn to use Twitter in Ten Minutes" (I think, unless the publishers change it) and it comes out end of Sept.

MrsVamos · 31/05/2012 17:08

Oh, that's a shame, I don't 'do' twatter, or anything like that. No offence. Smile

Mind you, if I see it in shops then I can think "I've talked to 'er". I shall be in bookshops nudging people saying "Buy this one ! It's great, I know the author".

PrincessPinot · 31/05/2012 17:08

Well done MmeL

Abs - WHAT COLOUR POLISH? (do capitals give this question the gravitas I feel it deserves?)

JustineMumsnet · 31/05/2012 17:16

@MmeLindor

Got totally distracted by fluffy baby that I almost forgot to say how delighted I am that MrAbs is making an honest woman out of Abs

There are people getting pregnant and having babies and everything.

I have no babies, weddings to celebrate but I am having a book published and I give you all fair warning that I will spam the boards in Sept and make you all buy it.

Can you make everyone buy our books while you're at it please MmeL?

Justine

You're not suggesting we go out and in public advise people to buy MN books ? Shock

That's like giving away all my secrets at once. Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 31/05/2012 17:33

MrsVamos she is beautiful! I'm Envy.

Mme will look put for your book, I 'did' twitter but gave up as couldn't get to grips with it. Maybe I wasn't doing it right. I bet Mel Sykes will buy too, there's a woman who needs to learn the difference between 'public' and 'private' Confused

Justine I bought the MN guide to babies and toddlers.

Congratulations everybody! except her Maj

Justine, release a book telling me how to get a grubby pawed 7yo who knows everything and hates me (but loves me) to behave himself and not leave me cringing and rocking in the corner swigging gin, and I'll be 1st in line!

MmeLindor. · 31/05/2012 17:50

Justine
I have bought MN books even though I don't have a baby or toddler. Just cause.

We could do a MN book day, where we all descend on our local bookstore and bully people into buying an MN book.

Yes, Mel Sykes is definitely getting a copy, poor deluded women. That is in chapter 5 "How to send a DM".

Am sure we must cover that in the Rules - standard 7-year old practice innit?

Nice idea - we could do it on World Book Day - which we will all be boycotting (Mumsnet Rule no. 32, paragraph 12, subsection 3).

I'm still waiting for you to do one about Teenagers, Justine.

Mind you, as mine are now 17 and 20 it's probably a bit too late ... Grin

get0rfm0iland · 31/05/2012 18:23

Yes a book for teenagers would be good.

However all parents of teenagers are too SKINT to buy books for ourselves, what with paying for all the ski trips, Hollister crap, driving lessons, shoes, etc etc ad infinitum.

Blatherskite · 31/05/2012 18:35

I refuse to boycott World Book Day! I love it!

Hullygully · 31/05/2012 18:53

I'll do one about teenagers.

  1. Lock them in a cupboard.
  1. Let them out in five years.

The end.

MmeLindor. · 31/05/2012 18:54

BIWI
You could write the one about teenagers

BIWItheBold · 31/05/2012 18:56

I think Hully's would be better, Mme!

Hullygully · 31/05/2012 19:05

1A Let them out at brief interludes to score your drugs.
