Deletions etc

JustineMumsnet · 30/05/2012 19:50

So we've had a get together at MNHQ and we have come up with the following set of actions/proposals, following on from the previous thread:

  1. We will make more effort to be communicative and transparent. This will include the MNHQ duty person posting on the boards more to explain a deletion of a post or a thread and providing more info in cases where we have banned or suspended someone for trolling, so folks know that we are "doing something". We will also try to provide more specific message deleted info - ie more than just because it "breaks talks guidelines" (eg because it perpetuates rape myths etc) (NB this will take a bit of time because it involves tech)
  1. We will aim to be quicker to delete threads that have been or seem to have been started purely to inflame/goad, even if it means we occasionally might make a mistake. This is to avoid the goady threads where an OP is deliberately inflaming, leading to a lot of deleted responses. We will also suspend those who we suspect of being out to deliberately goad and make sure our guidelines reflect this.
  1. We will aim for a lighter touch approach to deletions where discussion is robust but lively and interesting and "attacks" are borderline/very slight/ 6 of one, half a dozen of the other.
  1. We will make sure everyone at MNHQ is aware of looking at the bigger picture - not just focus on the reported post - and is clear on what constitutes a personal attack - ie that it's ok to attack an opinion, not ok to attack a poster.
  1. Our policy on trollhunting remains not to tolerate it - so please don't do it, but please do report suspicions to us. That said, we will try to be more communicative on threads where folks suspect a troll - ie we are aware that some people have expressed doubts and we are looking into it/ we have checked this out and have no reason to believe this person is a troll/ we agree this person is not what they seem and have deleted the thread.
  1. We will hold regular chats/q&as about moderation issues and policy - monthlyish? - where we can have a good debate about any particular bugbear or issue and one of us will discuss policy and why we do what we do...

Out of interest we've checked the deletions thing and surprisingly the number of deleted messages seems to have dropped not risen year on year - even though traffic is up by more than 40%
(these include messages deleted from deleted threads - so one long thread = 1000 deletions)

Nonetheless we think people have raised some good points and we hope all trying the above will make the board better - if not we'll try something else Smile - thanks for all the input.

Please do post your thoughts/observations (disclaimer - I'm off out shortly so won't be around to respond tonight but will be back tomorrow)

How do I delete a post?

AnyFucker · 31/05/2012 23:37

why do you ask, bobits ?

do you mean you want to get a thread removed ?

go to the Op of the thread and click "report" to the right of the name and put a message in the box to ask HQ to remove it

are you ok ?

Oracle - I haven't exactly been shouting about it, just let it out now and then. No ackshual announcements as such (and I keep forgetting who knows and who doesn't Blush). Although now I've had the 20w scan and everything seems to be as it should, I could probably relax a leetle more about it - but still...

Thank you Smegs! I see you are a fan of the epic Red Dwarf - great show.Grin

And congratulations to other pregnant people, and fur baby owners too. :)

KatieS - regardless of the job, don't you think Her Maj should be congratulated for still being IN the job after 60y? I think it's a pretty amazing achievement, regardless.

MmeL - sorry, I also can't be doing with Twitter and your book probably won't make it to these 'ere shores - but good luck with it!

AnyFucker · 01/06/2012 07:20

< tiny squeal >

Thumbwitch · 01/06/2012 07:21

Thumbwitch · 01/06/2012 09:09

Thanks Biwi! :)

mistlethrush · 01/06/2012 09:10

Nothing like pasting it over a thread like this so that the news spreads round Thumb!

Thumbwitch · 01/06/2012 09:22

TBH, I didn't expect so many people to notice or be interested, MT! It's lovely that they are though :)

mistlethrush · 01/06/2012 09:26

I'm very excited for you! Grin and getting the virtual play mat out for the floor when the time comes.

Bobits · 01/06/2012 10:24

Hi, I am fine thanks, - I realised one of my posts on a previous thread of mine may have been triggering.

I asked if I should be deleted because of this - thanks :)

ScrambledSmegs · 01/06/2012 10:29

So, Thumbwitch - October, eh? Live birth thread mayhap?

G'wan. I'll do it if you do Wink

Thumbwitch · 01/06/2012 11:10

Heh, no I doubt I'll be able to. Due to my High Risk status, I'll be in hospital, possibly being induced and won't really have much access to internet (Australia, still not that high tech everywhere) - and if it's anything like my last time, I'll barely be able to lift my head, let alone MN! but I dare you to... Grin

ScrambledSmegs · 01/06/2012 12:01

Never could resist a dare Grin

juneybean · 01/06/2012 14:52

I noticed a post got deleted for breaking talk guidelines, but other than being a pointless post I couldn't see how it broke the rules.

If we're going around deleting pointless posts, MN would be empty...

HRHBumpingFuglies · 01/06/2012 16:56

Congratulations Thumbwitch! Thanks

giraffesCantFitInThePalace · 02/06/2012 09:44

aww Thumb I have tears in my eyes Grin You have kept that quiet! Understand why though. Hope all continues to go well, and you have a wee bundle to keep you up all night....and then we can chat in the day time haha!

Thumbwitch · 02/06/2012 09:55

Aw thanks Giraffes! And you too HRHBF :)
