Why is there a baking topic?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 10/05/2012 16:12

I thought there was a move to rationalise the number of topics on MN.

It was bad enough having Recipes and Food. Now it's Recipes and Food and Baking (oh and Weaning I think). Wouldn't one "Feed The World" topic be preferable?

Sorry if this has been covered already.

Food and recipes are the same thing IMO. Baking is a it superfluous. Wine could come under "food and drink". I like having weaning separate because it is not of interest to anyone not weaning, but massively interesting to those who are.

Why not simplify to: Food and recipes, Wine Cellar, Weaning?

ThisWeekonFancyPuffin · 15/05/2012 16:15

I think we should have more topics.

Style and beauty for example, we could have;

S and B: Stuff only thin people can wear
S and B: Over priced tat
S and B: Sad fat clothes for me

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/05/2012 16:52

I'd have thought that weaning and breast/bottle feeding could be combined, but as I rarely read threads on either and am long past that point, it's none of my business. I rather like that they come under Feed the World though.

If I could really have my way, I'd go with GOML, but keep the baby feeding thing apart because I clearly don't want to read about cracked nipples alongside the slow cooker recipes and the Chenin Blanc suggestions.

Oh God that's just reminded me of when I was pregnant with ds and how I just knew I'd breastfeed because I equated formula with packet soups or Complan, neither of which, as a food snob, I'd choose to eat. What an utter wanker I'd have been on MN back then Blush

Thankfully years of parenting have given me a little more perspective Grin

I think we should have a Crisps topic. Or possibly an overarching Savoury Snacks one, within which we could have Crisps, Bombay Mix, Peanuts and so on.

motherinferior · 15/05/2012 17:08

Also Tortilla CHips, obviously.

wem · 15/05/2012 17:08

If you're really going to do away with our shiny new baking topic (Sad) then how about three topics: cooking, eating, drinking?

Sirzy · 15/05/2012 17:15

Why not just have "food and drink" and "weaning"? Food and drink covers pretty much everything else anyway!

HelenMumsnet · 15/05/2012 17:48

@wem

Haven't said that, wem. We're asking for ideas and suggestions, is all.

And Quavers. And those 'orrible Cheesie Puffs things that stain your fingers.

God, I SO have the munchies now...

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2012 18:36

the thing is, why can't you ask for weaning recipes under the recipes topic?

i still feel it's more of a "parenting" thing than a "food" thing though... but if you specifically were looking for a foody answer then you'd just post in food wouldn't you?

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2012 18:37

so MN how about you just ask me, GOML and Jenai to sort out all the topics?
it'll be great. you don't even have to pay us much

MardyBra · 15/05/2012 19:57

Can I join the topics subcommittee too?

TheSkiingGardener · 15/05/2012 20:21

Can I be on the committee too! I am very opinionated but don't mind if I'm over-ruled.

For example, under "feed the world" it should be Food, Drink, Feeding babies and weaning. 4 topics. I think you need to take a common/obvious question for a section, and if it's difficult to tell where it goes then you have too many topics.

thisisyesterday · 15/05/2012 20:27

MN... why do you like topics?
does it help you in any way?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 15/05/2012 21:42

I like topics, because I like to file things. I would hate for there to be just the one, as it would be overrun with ttc threads and the like.

But too atomised and it becomes unworkable.

Topics are good.

Topics mean I can hide stuff like camping, conception, ante/post-natal clubs, baby equipment, BF/FF and anything to do with pets. Then Active Convos really works for me, because in theory I only see threads that might be of interest. And I love the new easy hide function, which allows me to really hone my active list.

Topics also mean that if I'm in the mood for something specific I can meander into Feminism, Pedants' Corner or AIBU, depending on whether I'm feeling feminist, pedantic or up for a fight.

But there are so many topics, nobody know where to put threads, so everything gets bunged into Chat and AIBU.

MardyBra · 16/05/2012 00:11

- I've just found a completely empty topic

MardyBra · 16/05/2012 00:13

Underused: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/homework_corner

MardyBra · 16/05/2012 00:17

Surely this can go: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/christmas_card_auction

MardyBra · 16/05/2012 00:18

ha ha ha ha ha

HelenMumsnet · 16/05/2012 10:03

@thisisyesterday

MN... why do you like topics? does it help you in any way?

Well, we like to keep you lot happy - and if there's a demand for a new topic, we have tended in the past to bung it up.

But we're aware that there are so many topics now - and they're probably not very well signposted - that many people ignore them/don't know about them and just post in AIBU or Chat instead.

This means some topics are tumbleweed. Which leads even more people to put threads in AIBU or Chat instead.

Nothing wrong with AIBU or Chat, mind. It's just that, if we've got all these Topics, it would be nice if they were all well used.

ComradeJing · 16/05/2012 10:13

It's madness to have food and recipes and baking and wine as separate topics.

Should simply be food and drink.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 16/05/2012 10:34

Grin @ Mardy's finds.

Homework Corner would actually be quite nice; I'm not sure I even knew it existed. I'm sure there was a similar section on another (long gone) parenting forum I used to frequent.

I think with some of the more specialist topics, that it would be prudent to actually ask the regular users how they feel. I appreciate that there are some safe places where people can discuss sensitive issues without having their threads overrun with numpties like me stating the bleeding obvious.

I don't count Baking in that category, but I'm a bit scared that if it was scrapped the Bakers would come at me with their Kitchen Aids Shock Grin

Under food and drink, how about: Sweet, Savory and Beverages
