has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

OP posts:
usualsuspect · 16/12/2011 22:58

OK then .just go on and on about something that only a few out of the thousands of mnetters are bothered about

See I'm already bored with this

MN will go on

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 23:05

Well why are you here then usual? On this thread I mean? There are tonnes of others where people aren't dscussing this....if you are happy with it all...why come here and tell people not to talk about it? Confused

MmeLindor. · 16/12/2011 23:05

Well, I noticed it, but I am quite a gadgety person.

It really doesn't bother me. You have to click two buttons, one of which is a big pop up with your FB picture that asks if you want to post to your FB wall.

If you hate it, don't click on it.

stayathomegardener · 16/12/2011 23:07

So one solution would be to ask mumsnet to delete your every post say 24hours after posting.Gosh what a lot of work that would create.........

usualsuspect · 16/12/2011 23:08

Because I like to give an alternative view ,you know, to let MNHQ know that you don't speak for the majority

baubleybobbityhat · 16/12/2011 23:10

I think it would be way cooler if Mumsnet steered well away from facebook.

Fb is so yesterday and people are leaving it in droves.

usualsuspect · 16/12/2011 23:12

Tumblr is the place to be ,according to my teenage DS Grin

Trills · 16/12/2011 23:14

I am posting here because I feel the need to combat the ignorance that has been displayed regarding MN and Facebook sharing your email address, or linking your Facebook realname to your MN nickname, and other silliness.

In a reassuring way I'd like to say "it doesn't work that way you numpties" at all the people who are massively over-reacting.

HopeEternal · 16/12/2011 23:20

For those of you who are saying that we must be logged in to FB for a Like to post to our wall, may I just point out that at least one poster on this thread has said that she was NOT logged in at the time she clicked on the Like button yet when she then logged into FB the link was posted on her wall.

I don't like the LIKE button. I don't like the LIKE button on any site I use. I don't click on them.

However I think the greater and more immediate problem at the moment is that there are glitches with the way this LIKE button is set up. Numerous posters have stated that they clicked on the LIKE button and then clicked on the CANCEL button yet the link still posted to their wall. Others have said they didn't get a popup with the option to post or cancel.

For that reason alone I really think the LIKE button should be disabled across the site until those issues are resolved.

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 23:22

I agree Trills that many are panicking over that alone...but for me it's bigger...it's about the internet becoming too linked...too much rolled into one. We'll soon all be made to have EVERYTHING on FB....banks will roll out a new scheme where your details are stored there...{Trills just got an overdraft extension...LIKE!} and schools will have a FB instead of a website...because it's cheaper and the dinner ladies and teachers are all friends with the kids and the parents anyway....ok...I sound Tinfoil Hatty...but I just don't like it....

[Shivers under tinfoil blanky]

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 23:24

We'll all soon be paying for things with our phones you know...that's already doable in some places....scan yer phone to pay for the bus...your shopping...and post a pic at the same time! There'll be an option...pay now and SHARE with FB!

MmeLindor. · 16/12/2011 23:24

You can just not have FB if you don't like it.

And I think that the feeling of privacy that we have is an illusion tbh.

Anyone who posts on a public forum should be aware of this.

GeriManda · 16/12/2011 23:46

Tumblr is well 2010.

MN - this is just really, well, uncool. Desist.

redlac · 16/12/2011 23:48

Tumblr and pinterest take up more of my browsing time than FB.

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 16/12/2011 23:51

Never heard of tumbler and pinterest. [old gimmer emoticon]

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 16/12/2011 23:51

Hopeeternal yes, it was me. Not logged in to FB and the MN post appeared (obviouly I saw it after logging in). Plus I am registered with 2 different email addresses - -one for MN and one for FB.

Get0rf · 17/12/2011 00:02

Pray, what is this tumbler of which you speak?

GeriManda · 17/12/2011 00:06

tumblr's for kidz. you can stalk Actually, it's shit but no doubt mn will do a timblr link in oh, about 5 years time

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 00:19

Not for the perimenopausals then...

GeriManda · 17/12/2011 00:24

no, just for teens to post " random lead singer - did he mean to be born so sexy"

RIZZ0 · 17/12/2011 00:30

Christ, so I've just finished this thread at last.

The upshot of which is reams and reams and reams and reams and reams of MN'ers saying they hate the button/it's tacky/it makes them feel unsafe/it could expose them at work, in RL etc etc etc, and MNHQ basically ignoring it all and coming up with reason after reason why it's ok, honest, Jedi-mind-trick-wrapped-up-in-self-depracating-jokey-strikeouts hokey.

I hated it when it was hidden away and I hate it enough to leave now that it's in such an obvious place. As many, many others have said.

Any thread in any topic previously seen as safe to have the button present on, can take a more serious/personal turn at any time and go postal. You only have to look at what happened with Riven to see how things can get out of control very quickly.

I've always felt there was a democratic vein running through Mumsnet and this clearly is no longer the case. If it's not about the money or the fame, WHY will you not back down MNHQ?

MardyStropAboutLikeButton · 17/12/2011 00:39

Rizzo. Great summary.

Get0rf · 17/12/2011 00:43

You know what, I have just worked out that teleport Star Trek floaty thingy. I went into customise and viewed it. If that has been here for months on end (with a PRINTER icon so you CAN PRINT THREADS TO KEEP FOREVER) with FB and Twitter links, well I don't see the real issue tbh.

I still hate the whole thin end of the wedge concept of like buttons, and loathe facebook, but still, I don't see the damage it will do, so am going to do an about-turn on the earlier sentiments I posted.

nooka · 17/12/2011 05:43

Plus point of this thread for me is learning how to get rid of the annoying floaty thing that appeared a little while back for no discernible reason.

JamieComeHome · 17/12/2011 09:13

baubley - are they leaving FB in droves? Does that make me super-cool for being perspicacious enough not to join in the first place?
