has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

OP posts:
QuintessentiallyFestive · 16/12/2011 21:42

I would imagine the Facebook page connected to the same email address mmhq has on file. Remember, they just recently asked us to update our details - Cunningly- at the same time as the secret
Santa thing was happening...

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 21:44

No it DOES NOT log you in to fb Quint.

If your dd left herself logged in to FB and you clicked like it would like it on her fb.

QuintessentiallyFestive · 16/12/2011 21:45

But if nobody was actually logged on?

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 21:46

If you have a look at half the sites you are using outside mumsnet you'll see they probably all have that stupid button or some sort of tie in to FB.

Trills · 16/12/2011 21:46

A link to the MN thread will be posted on the wall of whoever is logged in.

Only one person can be logged into Facebook per browser (browser e.g. Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer, Safari).

It doesn't matter if your email address is the same or different - MNHQ and Facebok do not share information like your email address.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 21:46

It would ask you to log in to FB.

CalmDownDearItsOnlyALikeButton · 16/12/2011 21:47

Try it quint, go to FB. Confirm you are logged out and that everyone who shares your computer is logged out.

If you see the sign in screen this is the case.

Then come back and click LIKE

RichTeaAreCrap · 16/12/2011 21:57

Why is this any different to threads being linked on Twitter? That has been happening for ages - it's the same thing surely?

Also, people will get over it. Everytime there is a change there is uproar on MN. When the problem with clicking it is fixed then you need to click twice to link it to Facebook. That isn't one click by mistake.

Why do people feel like they can tell MN how to run the site? The comments and genuine opinions are fine, but the first few pages of this post are full of comments like 'REMOVE IT NOW, GET RID OF IT NOW, SOONER RATHER THAN LATER'.

Ffs who do some people think they are on here? Why do they think they can bark their orders out and MNHQ will just do exactly what they say? Do they think MN would close down without you? It wouldn't you know!

I personally don't like it too much, but hey ho, things change all the time and the world seems to be being taken over with technology and social networking sites. Why should MN stay in the dark ages and not keep up with it?

ThatVikRinA22 · 16/12/2011 22:06

what does this button actually do please? explain it to a technophobe...

"Actually, no, Fellatio, I take issue with that. Mumsnet absolutely is all about the forum. The Talk boards are MN's soul - that's one of Justine's most-repeated phrases. And we treasure all our interesting, funny and insightful Talk regulars "

If MN is all about the forum then why ride roughshod over such a tidal wave of negativity over the 'Like' facility?

If the forums are MN soul, isn't it a bit disingenuous to claim so while actually pissing all over those who create your content?

What does the Like button add to the MN experience? Are you suggesting that C+P is beyond people's capabilities?

No?

Well then it must be about publicity. For which you did consult users over whether to accept advertising from McDonalds.

I cannot understand why MN would press ahead with such a social media strategy without a) talking to the very people who are MN 'soul' and b) actually testing it out in some sort of beta capacity, so that any issues like the button appearing on thread in Teenagers etc would have been ruled out.

AnotherBeserker · 16/12/2011 22:17

Becuase RichTea, as has been pointed out:

If you have multiple users of FB on your pc etc, if you accidentally click like it appears on their wall. Shit hits the fan

If lurking poster X like, and publicises a thread via their wall to their (not very carefully accepted) 'friends' on FB there is FAR more of a chance that a sensitive thread gets out there.

MN wants to be user driven. It's a bad, BAD idea to piss so many of your active users off. Yes we get 6 gazillion hits on mn per month (or whatever it is) but the actual stats for regular posters (or even semi regs) is FAR less

To say we make MN then say well, actully, fuck what you all think, it's the weekend, we can't deal with it till Monday is a bit Hmm

So really AnotherBeserker the problem is with people and their own security? If people have multiple users of FB on their pc then it is their responsibility to make sure they are logged out of FB when they leave the pc.

Also if a post is publicised to their wall to their "not very carefully accepted friends".....again, how is this MN's fault? If people want to accept people on FB knowing that they have accepted them 'not very carefully' then it is down to them and they know the risks involved.

Both of those issues are about security and privacy - both of which are our own personal responsibility and if people are a bit crap with that then it isn't MN's fault or problem is it?

AnotherBeserker · 16/12/2011 22:31

I see your point RichTea.

But. Peoples MN identity and FB/RL identity can be very different. I don't see what the like button adds to the users of MN?

The fundamental question which hasn't quite been answered by MNHQ is whether the button has been added to make MNers life easier, or to drive traffic to the site.

If we want to link to a thread then why not just leave it so there isn't the scope for problems to arise by VERY easily accidentally linking to FB.

If it is about driving traffic to MN then why not just say so?

AnotherBeserker · 16/12/2011 22:37

And, as I think has been pointed out above, you don't have to be logged into FB for it to post onto your/other user on pc wall.

And another question - why do we all have to link every fecking aspect of our lives to FB?

And why do we now have to wait until Monday to hear from the upper tier of MN as to why this is happening? With absolutely NO real answer well over 24 hours into the discussion?

It's all well and good saying your users are the soul of the site when they provide content for books and a mouthpiece for political discussion. But something that people seem to be so opposed to is ushered in under the veil and we all just have to like it until we are deemed to be within office hours of complaint....

RichTeaAreCrap · 16/12/2011 22:43

Yes, I can understand your frustrations about no response until next week - they do need to have their time off but it probably wasn't the best idea to make this change at the end of a week!

I thought you did have to be logged into FB for it to post on your wall?

If someone else is on your pc logged into FB then it will post on their wall. Again, that person, or the owner of the pc needs to be responsible for the security issue there and should be logged out if someone else is using the pc.

I know the question hasn't been answered, but of course it is there to drive more traffic to MN. I can't blame them for this either, surely they are just like any other business trying to generate business.

MmeLindor. · 16/12/2011 22:47

Just popping on to this thread to say I don't mind the button and that we have had one ^ up there for aaaaaaaaaaages.

And to offer Helen some Chocolate for all her hard work today.

And to snigger that 17 people have liked this thread.

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 22:50

Exactly Bezerker Funny they chose Friday at 5.30 to put it on. And agree...why do we have to frigging "Like" every bit of whatever we happen to come across...

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 22:52

We haven't had a "Like button" up there for ages MmeLindor ..it was a different thing which many people had not noticed... as like this new one...they never told us they were putting it on.

usualsuspect · 16/12/2011 22:53

Well if you are flouncing then just go then

Nothing will change ,MN will go on without you

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 22:54

RichTea of course they want to make money...they are already making money...why does EVERY site have to bow down to FB though? It's not the frigging Daddy of the internet!

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 22:55

I never said anything about flouncing Usual.
