CarolCervix · 15/12/2011 16:42

has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

OP posts:
wannaBe · 16/12/2011 12:36

stupid it's been there for at least two years.

There used to actually be a link to facebook/twitter next to every post on every thread.

This really isn't anything new.

But that aside, people are always linking to threads on mn on twitter etc.

This really is mass hysteria over nothing. If people don't want their identity compromised they just won't click the like button - that's not changed.

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:37

And will it be removed now you know that it's not wanted?

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:37

@StupidLikeButton

How long is "ages" and what "viewport bar"?

It's the slide bar thingie (technical) that slides down at the top when you're looking at threads.

If you can't see it, you've probably hidden it. Go into Customise/Other Options/Hide the viewport bar (A.K.A. slide bar) and select "No".

It's been there about 9 months, I reckon....

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:38

A link is not a "like" is it? YThe Like button is different to a link.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:38

@Millicano

Veneers darling?

No, crooked and tea-stained but no holes (right now)

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:39

@IAmFuckingPissedOff

You really need to look at the list of topics very quickly.

And removing it from pre-existing threads.

At least Hmm.

Yes, I've already posted to say that we are looking at both of these.

Will report back once I know what we can actually do when.

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:39

Right...can't see it HelenMN but eithr way...will the new button be removed?

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 16/12/2011 12:40

Mistle clearly you're right but I would've thought I would still have to give permission for the post to appear. Like on Facebook, there are different apps and the ask whether they can access my basic info, etc and post on my Facebook wall. So why, MNHQ, not in this case? Plus once I 'liked' something on another website (not a forum) and then I had to put my Facebook login details to be able for the 'like' link to appear there.

Me not like it. Tut tut.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:40

@StupidLikeButton

A link is not a "like" is it? YThe Like button is different to a link.

They're both "Like" buttons, really. The one in the Viewport bar says "share" when you hover over it but it does exactly the same thing (posts the thread title to your Facebook wall)

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:42

Ah! Just seen it....when I hover on it i says "share on FB" but I have to say this has been snuck in rather...that slide bar is vey subtle....I have never seen it and would not have been comfortable wth it...and the LKE button is far more than I am happy with. Its all part of the Facebook-isation of EVERY site on the net....it's crap and we mainly dont want it.

Why does EVRYTHING have to be bloody "Liked"??? Can we have it gone please?

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 16/12/2011 12:43

Wannabe - you are not paying attention to what people are saying - those with iPad/iPhone thingies are saying that it's quite easy to accidentally click on a button they don't intend to, just while scrolling over a page. This does not constitute "an inability to use a website", it is a technical problem with the hardware and a VALID CONCERN to some (not me, I hate touchscreeny things - give me a keyboard any day).

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:44

@JjandtheBean

--i think the like button is a pile of wank too but Helen herself didn't make it and put it there--

and you're quite right

Why should they remove it just because a few loud people don't like it?!

It's their website you know, not yours, and I bet most users don't even care about it. I think MNHQ pander too much already to the frothers, what with 'mumsnet classic' etc. ridiculous.

IAmFuckingPissedOff · 16/12/2011 12:45

Ok, maybe we should all be able to ask about certain topics.

I've already mentioned Child/Adolescent Mental Health, Fostering, Adoption.

Others have said Conception, Infertility, Forces Sweethearts.

What about Legal, Lone Parents, Teenagers, Menopause, General Health?

I haven't checked them all, but many of these topics are potentially sensitive.

I see Feminism has a nice handly link to save trolls people the trouble of having to cut and paste.

wannaBe · 16/12/2011 12:45

stupidlike it definitely hasn't been snuck in. There used to be a twitter/facebook link next to every post on every thread. I don't know when that was removed or why but it definitely used to blatantly be there.

I don't like facebook either but surely if you don't like something then you just don't use it - I really can't see what the issue is.

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 16/12/2011 12:45

And that viewport thing that appeared whenever you scrolled down - how many people disabled that (like I did) as soon as they found out how? Lots, I expect, thus removing the "easy" option to "Like" a thread on FB.

In the end, MNHQ - what is the point of having done it? Have some people complained how hard it is to link to a thread on FB? Have they whinged about wanting a "one click" button to link to a thread on FB? Because if not, I can't for the life of me see why you've done this.

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:45

It's for FAR more subtle reasons than many have mentioned. People are rightlly suspicious of FB....they don't want MN linked directly wth it for reasons of security.

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:46

And we hope you've seen that our Tech team are working urgently to fix this for you all.

That was a balls up unforeseen error in the rollout.

(Which is why we can't also promise you the changes to the excluded topics etc today - but we'll try.)

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:47

That's right Thumb

StupidLikeButton · 16/12/2011 12:48

So you're not getting rid of the actul button then HelenMN

HarktheHelenMumsnetAngelsSing · 16/12/2011 12:49

Ok, at the moment, the topics that don't have the FB button are...

Relationships
Bereavement
Miscarriage
OTBT
All special needs topics (including Special Educational Needs)
Antenatal Tests/choices
Antenatal/Postnatal depression
Mental health
Child/adolescent mental health
Life-limiting illness

...and, any minute now... (thanks, Tech!) Forces Sweethearts.

wannaBe · 16/12/2011 12:49

"People are rightlly suspicious of FB....they don't want MN linked directly wth it for reasons
of security." Then don't link your mn threads on fb. Someone else "liking" a thread on fb isn't going to compromise your security.

IdoNOTlike · 16/12/2011 12:49

MNHQ - why not remove the wanky like button altogether?
As I see it a huge percentage of us hate it and a percentage don't mind (but probably won't use) leaving a miserly 10% who will.
So what is the point?

I hate the association with facebook just as much as I hate tickers so you mght just as well bring on the tickers?
Or get rid of the like button and the 'likers' can go to Nethuns where they belong

MistleTobyLeWolef · 16/12/2011 12:50

Of course they're not getting rid of the button, Stupid. It's an easier way for MN to make more money by more people clicking/joining. As has already been said, bollocks to the 'minority' of regular posters who hate it. It's a far better idea to court the wankers and lookie-loos casual readers who might click on the ads while they're here.
