CarolCervix · 15/12/2011 16:42

has it always been there? or has it moved? and does that mean if someone 'likes' that thread it will be posted to their fb page?

The problem is that most people have a 'public' presence on the interent. Nowadays that is almost inevitable the way modern life works and often that means Facebook and other easily Googled public information linked to our real identity.

For many of us though we also want a 'private' identity where we can speak about privately in the way that many posts on MN do.

The problem with this 'Like' button is it forms a potential link between that 'public' and 'private' presence on the internet. That is frightening.

stressheaderic · 15/12/2011 21:18

I'm off.

Mumsnet - you've been truly valuable to me since becoming a parent, I couldn't have done it without you. I have taken advice from some absolutely wonderful people and it has helped me through some very dark times. But this doesn't sit right with me, I don't want to be a part of it, so I'm going.

DP will soon be wondering why the house is so clean

CrispLeCrisp · 15/12/2011 21:19

People know i MN but most people (i think) just forget about it. If they see on my wall loads of MN threads (which MN friends have liked), i think they would be more likely to be intrigued and check it out (which is obv what MN wants). If they wanted to I suspect i could be 'found' as previously i have not massively 'hidden' stuff as there was a greater degree of separation.

redlac · 15/12/2011 21:21

but surely that is why MN gives us the ability to name change? Make a point of changing your name every 4 months. No one will be able to link all your posts and suddenly realise that its YOU

winterfox · 15/12/2011 21:22

but surely only frightening if you click the button outing yourself to your facebook contacts?

maybe mn could have a hide function for people who press buttons when they know they shouldn't

redlac · 15/12/2011 21:23

to be honest if I had a friend who was always linking to MN posts I would hide them. If you friends press Like on this thread it doesn't appear on your wall only on your feed - its only if you LIKE threads that it appears on your wall. Even then your FB friends wouldn't magically know which poster was you, if you had even posted at all

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:23

"that is the risk that you take when you post stuff on the internet"

Except the risk wasn't so apparent, direct or easy as it is now and this change applies retrospectively - you can go back and "like" old threads posted before the dumb button.

redlac · 15/12/2011 21:24

by clicking the button it posts on your wall that you are linking to a MN thread it doesn't magically highlight all your posts and change your nm to your real name so how would it out you to your FB friends?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:24

TBH, the "risk" doesn't bother me particularly as I have posted nothing I would be worried about.

pixiestix · 15/12/2011 21:30

Another hater here Sad

MNHQ, why oh why did you think this would be a good idea? Were the hoards of people saying they didn't want a "like" button not enough of a clue??

NESSAtheredROSEreindeer · 15/12/2011 21:31

Please get rid of it. For all the reasons above.

QuickLookBusy · 15/12/2011 21:33

You may already be able to copy and paste these threads already but I suspect that not many people do. The fact there is now a like button will mean many more threads will be put on facebook.

If this button was just on light hearted threads I would think that would be fine.

However as someone said earlier the like button is available on so many topics including teenagers, conception etc.

That is just stupid.

IReallyHateMyCat · 15/12/2011 21:34

Were the hoards of people saying they didn't want a "like" button not enough of a clue??

pixie mumsnet has over 1.5 million users. Most of them are not whinging on this thread. Because they don't care.

winterfox · 15/12/2011 21:36

i think that s the key, don't post anything you wouldn't want your facebook friends to read

have the courage of your convictions maybe and post and stand by them

that would counter out all off aibu Wink

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:37

MN has over 1.5million members. The number of active posters is far less than that IIRC.

pixiestix · 15/12/2011 21:37

But in my mind IReally if you have a group of people who don't care either way and a group of people who are really upset by this, then what have you got to win by pandering to the people who don't care - because they don't care. Confused So make everyone happy by getting rid of the damn thing!

IReallyHateMyCat · 15/12/2011 21:38

according to wiki it was monthly users dragon

Valpollicella · 15/12/2011 21:39

Redlac, post enough details and namechanging is irrelevant frankly as people can connect the dots, especially if you have extenuating cirumstances for whatever reason.

Why do we have to 'like' to Facebook? I do understand that as a social media marketing tool it's and easy and free way of infiltrating further avenues, but SO many people do NOT want this MN.

Seems a real shame to piss so many members off over something like this.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:39

Gosh, well Wiki is always true isn't it? Hmm

I'm sure the lower no. came from MNHQ though.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:40

Anyway, users is not the same as active posters.

IReallyHateMyCat · 15/12/2011 21:40

Mumsnet is Britain's busiest website for parents, hosting discussion forums where parents give and receive peer-to-peer parenting support, as well as discussing a wide range of other topics. Currently, the site receives 570k site visits and 32m page views each month, and 1.5m monthly unique users make approximately 25,000 posts each day

Mumsnet has more people on it that you are actually likely to know than random people on fb, people. Don't post what you aren't comfortabel with people seeing.

redlac · 15/12/2011 21:42

I just don't understand the fuss - MN themselves post links on FB & Twitter to threads but I don't think I've seen any threads complaining about that.

winterfox · 15/12/2011 21:42

exactly hatemycat

why do you hate your cat btw?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 15/12/2011 21:42

"1.5m monthly unique users make approximately 25,000 posts each day"

Which is less than one post per person! LOLOL.. 0.51666666667 each actually.

IReallyHateMyCat · 15/12/2011 21:42

TBF dragon I did my best to find the numbers..you just stated you "think" i'm wrong that's hardly more accurate is it? Hmm
