dear mn hq, please could something be done about the anti sn posts on mn

as I know you are aware(I have the emails) people from the sn community have left this week, due to the vile things that have been said to the/or about SN.
isn't it time that mn hq took some steps to eradicate this, as you do with trolls? surely disablist/anti sn/ personal attacks should be deleted and something done about the posters.
or do we just keep loosing well informed, SN educated people from mn.
(no I can't link to a thread as there has been too many)

"I find it incredibly offensive that a generalised comment about a specific group of people is deemed "inoffensive" simply because no individual was named. That isn't how insults work and its disingenuous to state otherwise."

Yes, that.

4madboys · 11/09/2011 17:09

another like for stewies post! :)

mnhq have changed my thread title so it is now more clear what the thread is about :) am slightly wary that this will actually maybe bring out the trolls..?

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 17:20

I am posting on several threads at the moment, about similar topics. I did wonder how many posts were reported to MNHQ a day.

If we knew that roughly 300 posts (just snatched that figure out of clean air) were being reported, then it would be more acceptable and understandable that sometimes posts were deleted when they shouldn't have been, and viceversa.

That is a lot of reading for MNHQ to do, if they have to scroll up and down the thread to see when the first bun was thrown.

doublestandard · 11/09/2011 17:21

Also agree with Stewie

Totally agree with Stewie. There seems to be a necessary condition for MNHQ that a troll is someone who is not being themselves, which I have never seen as a requirement for a troll anywhere else. The stir up controversy bit, for sure, but the not being yourself thing is so weird for an internet forum. Surely we're all not being ourselves, is SGM really Stewie Griffin's Mom? My name isn't Alice.

As an aside, am really sorry to hear about the SN shit that's been going on. I've not been around much to see it, but what I've read here is appalling. Just wanted to acknowledge that.

RustyBear · 11/09/2011 17:58

Most of kidzrfreaky's posts and many of LOTM's have now gone.

Feenie · 11/09/2011 18:10

And let's not forget last weekend when (I think it was spiderpig who said it) disabled people were told if we can't queue up like normal people then we shouldn't go out.

That's very interesting - it was spiderpig8 who started the thread about the behaviour of an SEN child which ruined her family's visit to the cinema - it ended up being deleted. Some nice repetition of very questionable views there, then - although I did not actually see the second thread in question.

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 18:18

There is never going to be complete equality on thread or post deletions. For the simple reason that different MHHQers will have different tolerance levels.

Which is why it is important to have a general policy.

If nr is deemed racially offensive, then r*d should be deemed equally offensive.

I reported a poster with the name R***Rus but since heard that the poster was still posting. That is not on.

MNHQ need to work with some of the posters on the SN board and agree to some guidelines. Which words are offensive. What comments will not be tolerated. When posts should be deleted, when they should be left to stand but a warning given, both on the thread, and in an email to the poster.

Glitterknickaz · 11/09/2011 18:59

c&p from AIBU

I am going to make one single post on this.

People are spectacularly failing to see the point, and indeed twisting things (as in Lyingwitch's post).

I started a thread that bore absolutely no relation to my private life. The only vague association was that I have to claim benefits out of necessity. There has ensued fifteen odd pages of benefit bashing, including disgusting flaming of me for the way I live my life. I've been called lazy, entitled and scrounging, and that I have made bad lifestyle choices (if giving birth to three children with additional needs is a lifestyle choice then whatever).

I actually really enjoy a good debate too. I think there is mileage in discussing the current government spin on making deductions from benefits for rioting or truanting (my family does neither incidentally so why I should be referring to my family in my posting I do not know) and how that insinuates that both issues are created solely from people on benefits. I was really up for a debate ABOUT THE ISSUE I POSTED.

I didn't get that though. I got personal attacks and trollery instead. Over the course of the evening I contacted MNHQ no fewer than four times asking for their help. I didn't get a response until many hours later, and when it came the response was that nothing offensive had been posted and there had been no trolling.

On consideration I decided that it was simply the latest in a long line of MNHQ ignoring this specific type of trolling, and that I wasn't going to accept it any more. I have chosen to stop posting as I now believe that I'm never going to be able to start any kind of thread on here about any topic without the sn trolls crawling all over it. I believe fanjo feels the same way for the same reasons although I can't speak for her in that obviously. I am still reading. I believe any further posts from me will simply stick myself back in the firing line - hell I could start a thread about paint drying and some arsehole would end up telling me I was entitled and a scrounger purely because of who I am - and I'm not doing that any more.

It's not a flounce, I just fail to see why I cannot engage in debate that has nothing to do with my personal life without trolls getting stuck in. Hence the other thread I posted. So, if I'm not going to be allowed to post on a variety of topics then what is the point in posting at all? I'm certainly not attention seeking, I could well do without some of the sn troll attention.

4madboys · 11/09/2011 19:17

mme could you repost that on my thread? where we have put some ideas as to what we want mnhq to do? or even email it to them.

or i could c&p it onto the thread, if you dont mind? :)

glitter, you know i am sorry you feel that way :( and you know where i am xxx

edam · 11/09/2011 19:35

Glad HQ seem finally to be waking up to this.

Stewie's right, prejudice and discrimination isn't limited to insults directed at one person. Otherwise nr would be fine as long as you didn't call an individual poster a nr.

MmeLindor. · 11/09/2011 19:35

Will do, 4madboys

I've just seen this thread. It puts my whinging about suddenly having posts deleted into context. I am so sorry that those who are leaving have been targeted. Fanjo, I've long admired you - we had a misunderstanding recently and I'm very sorry about it.

I agree that lots of people don't flame the idiots who post disabilist comments, because they are worried about causing more offense (as I stupidly did). As I type this I wonder if the word "idiot" is wrong, if it is, I hope this post is deleted quickly.

Lots of people who post here don't have English as a first language, it can be difficult to understand which words are offensive and which are not. That doesn't mean that the words should be left, but I think it is part of the reason that they keep being used.

But none of that has anything to do with the trolling discussed in this thread. That is just nasty and it's inexcusable. Peachy posted above i've recently been told that god gave Sn people a lower status and that too much input is therefore ungodly There are a lot of people who imagine that success in life is an indication of inherent worth. They don't tend to cope well with adversity.

doublestandard · 11/09/2011 19:59

I support Lenin's suggestion on another thread to have a hide poster facility. I have made a complete 180 on this but I'd rather have that then the deletions and seeing the bigotted bollocks that is permitted on some threads.

RufusTFirefly · 11/09/2011 20:05

I got as far as lotm's comment about Glitter's pet. Evidently this person is well-heeled and thinks she is immune to disaster. Nobody is so immune; I lost all I had worked for through no fault of my own. I am lucky I salvaged something from the wreck and don't have to claim benefits.

Maybe a dose of adversity, sharply administered, might do her good.

She made me so furious I wanted to fill her Hunter wellies with cowshit.

HelenMumsnet · 11/09/2011 20:08

Evening. Apologies for not keeping up with this thread today (it's my day off - wibble) but we really cannot emphasise enough that it is - and remains - our policy to delete disablist posts (once we know about them) and ban/warn those who continue to flout our Talk Guidelines by posting disablism (once we know about them).

The fact that, over the past couple of days, we were not as fast as we should have been to do this (we do apologise for that) does not mean we have changed our policy or that we have somehow gone soft on disablist postings.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 11/09/2011 20:15

personally I think LOTM is turning into a caricature of herself.

HelenMumsnet · 11/09/2011 20:20

[quote MmeLindor]

I reported a poster with the name R***Rus but since heard that the poster was still posting. That is not on.

No, it's not on. Nobody who was reported to us for having a nickname like that would be able to continue posting.

tethersend · 11/09/2011 20:24

Helen, thanks for the email- and for the apology.

And the fridge Wink

K999 · 11/09/2011 20:30

Tethers, where the hell were you? I was waiting at the bandstand at 7.......Grin

CardyMow · 11/09/2011 20:30

Repeats to self - must stop engaging with LOTM, mus stop engaging with LOTM.

tethersend · 11/09/2011 20:51

Sorry, K999, I got caught up throwing chips at old ladies at the bus stop, then I was sick on myself. You know how it is.
