What's the etiquette on other posters having very similar posting names to yours?

Should I mind? Should I chill?

There are a few other Lemons on here, and hey, I'm cool y'know. Not like this is my whole identity important or anything. Plenty of room in the fruit bowl.

The thing is I've noticed another LemonX around (can't actually remember what the X is, but similar length to Difficult, easily mistaken) and I think they're new and .... Is there a protocol?

And ALmaMartyr, your current name is fantastic!

ChippyMinton · 08/03/2011 14:34

Well, the fragrant ChippingIn and I rub along quite happily, I think. . And MintChips. And a few other Minty-flavoured names.

I had a 'fox' name when I first joined MN. That was a nightmare.

nancydrewfoundaclue · 08/03/2011 15:35

I only noticed how many other nancys there were after I had been posting as nancydrew for a while Blush and I'm now quite attached to her Smile I don't think it has caused a problem so far.

Ingrid I had no idea you were FA - your posting style seems quite different - but I was wondering only a few days ago whether you'd name changed or disappeared

ShinyMoonInAPurpleSky · 08/03/2011 15:40

I got asked to name change because I spelt Shiny as Shiney which is too close to another poster affectionately known as "Shiney" and I don't want to get mixed up with her apparently.

I changed it happily because I hadn't even realised I had spelt "Shiny" wrong...

CaptainNancy - thanks! I'm quite fond of it :)

LemonDifficult · 08/03/2011 20:21

A RL friend of mine told me she'd signed up for MN and someone had the same name so she'd just put a few numbers after it.

I felt duty bound to explain that it wasn't a hotmail account and that ShinyShoes (no numbers) might be a bit put out.

Then she chose an awesome name instead so all was fine. But a RL discussion with a good friend isn't quite the same thing as publicly dressing down a newbie.

I'm trying on my old name for a bit, with a mispelling because apparently someone already has my old name! It could very well have been me, of course.....

AmazingBouncingFerret · 08/03/2011 20:35

I'm actually quite put out. Ive only ever seen one other ferret on here. There needs to be more ferrets IMO...

ShowOfHands · 08/03/2011 22:34

ShowOfHonds, I'm watching you. In awe mainly.

exexpat · 08/03/2011 22:38

Grin I think we need a ShowOfHounds on the doghouse threads - isn't it Crufts next week?

BoredomTrulyReigns · 08/03/2011 22:38

Does anyone know if MNSP has noticed Whitenosugarplease?

BecauseImWorthIt · 08/03/2011 22:49

I was taken aback when I saw a post that was from someone called BecauseISaidSo (I think that's the name), as I thought I had written it to start with Blush

It's funny how territorial your name becomes - I did (momentarily) feel quite put out, but it was a silly reaction, and I wouldn't have asked him/her to change their name.

Having said that, I haven't seen any posts from him/her since then, so there's little risk we might be confusing people. And I was here first

I remember her TAOB - and I was actually cross and miffed on your behalf, though I never noticed the PA action Grin You must have been subtle.

I haven't seen her in a while though. How are you old chum? (fa here) (and not old in the sense of old. Just long term) Grin

Smile I don't think I will ever leave...

bamboobutton · 09/03/2011 14:24

i've noticed quite a few other posters with bamboo in their name.

i'm not bothered and i have no idea who had the name first. i chose this as it's my ravelry name too.

the only time it confuses me is when i see bamboo in a thread and think to myself ' i haven't posted on here'Confused only to scroll up and see it was a different bamboo they were addressing.Smile

lostinwales · 09/03/2011 14:40

I spotted a slew of lostinsomethings a while back but then they vanished, I can only assume they got bored of being asked about where the lego got to. I have seen a poster called LOST though and I was briefly miffed as people shorten my name to that and I wanted it for myself!

AbsDuCroissant · 09/03/2011 15:50

As far as I'm aware, I am the only Abs, though there is AbFab or something like that, and it does temporarily confuse me.

I'm glad there's no other proper Abs, as it's gotten to the point that my ego is so huge that I see "abs" in real life, e.g. "a good abs workout" and think it's referring to me. Seeing my name posting all over MN will confuse me no end. I'll probably convince myself I have amnesia and have a sticky, soap-opera worthy meltdown.

TrillianAstra · 09/03/2011 16:29

...thinks Abs should not have revealed her weakness...

AbsDuCroissant · 09/03/2011 16:34

Or, this could be the moment I was preparing for all those afternoons after school when I watched Days of Our Lives and Loving. It was training for when I would not really get amnesia from MN and would have to live out my own soap opera

bibbitybobbityhat · 09/03/2011 16:39

I think I'm fairly unique Grin.

I get all the pinks and the sparklies mixed up.
