What's the etiquette on other posters having very similar posting names to yours?

Should I mind? Should I chill?

There are a few other Lemons on here, and hey, I'm cool y'know. Not like this is my whole identity important or anything. Plenty of room in the fruit bowl.

The thing is I've noticed another LemonX around (can't actually remember what the X is, but similar length to Difficult, easily mistaken) and I think they're new and .... Is there a protocol?

Hello from another Lemon. Not sure whether my name causes issue with yours or not, but then I don't post much. I've noticed a few Lemons around; my name was based on when my son was learning the alphabet and he got in a muddle around LMNOP, which came out sounding like my nn. So I'm kind of attached to it.

IngridBergmann · 08/03/2011 11:48

I bet you did, you evil person, delicatefluffybunny.

Though saying that feels wrong. Grin

Ingrid, I probably forced the poor person onto Netmums! Shock

JeremyVile · 08/03/2011 11:52

There's nothing wrong with pointing out the similarity - they may not have noticed - but agree that it is almost impossible to do so without looking like a self-important shit-head.

I can relate to feeling a bit put out though, I had another name - never used it that much - but felt slightly, and unreasonably irked when I saw someone with a bastardisation variation of it the other day.

My name was FenellaFudge and the other one was one letter different. Now, if they misspelled it then fine, but if it's because they typed in the proper spelling, saw it was already taken so changed one letter then that's a fucking liberty!! Ok, its not, but you know...

marquesas · 08/03/2011 11:53

selfimportantshithead - is that name taken Grin

orangehead · 08/03/2011 11:53

Must be a fruit thing, I have noticed a few oranges around. Doesnt bother me though

JeremyVile · 08/03/2011 11:53

LemonDifficult and LemonEmmaP are in no way interchangable. Imo.

RustyBear · 08/03/2011 11:53

I actually bought 'Rusty' when it came up in the auction MN had a few years ago, partly because that was what I had originally wanted and had been sad to see it taken, but also because lots of people call me Rusty & I didn't want confusion if anyone else bought it. I used it a few times but then decided I missed my 'bear' (there's quite a sleuth of bears on here, which I like belonging to) so I changed back.

But I've noticed another Rustyxxxx on here recently, which slightly confused me when I noticed a post addressed to them & thought for a minute it was me, but I obviously can't be that bothered by it, as I've actually forgotten what the other half of the name was.

I did change to AttilatheMum for about 3 months in 2007, having checked with AttilaThe Meerkat that she didn't mind, but I changed back after I got a CAT from someone who'd meant to contact the Meerkat.
But now there's an another leader of the Horde around who spells it differently - one T or 2 Ls, not sure which. I still use it occasionally, (usually when I want to go on MN when I have visitors, but don't want to reveal my normal name) The other Attila might get peeved if she thinks I'm taking her name, but I was actually here first, and I use it so rarely, that I don't worry much about it.

cheesesarnie · 08/03/2011 11:54

jv-fucking liberty i agree!Grinfwiw i like your name,so im glad you changed.

CaptainNancy · 08/03/2011 12:02

I have noticed that there are many Nancys these days, but we have disimilar posting styles and tend to hang around different topics, so it doesn;t seem to be an issue.

My 2nd mn name had a poster with only 1 letter different in a long name, and I did post on a thread about it- she was a very infrequent poster, but we had such radically different world views that it was very odd whenever I came across her on a thread. She either nc or left, as I haven't seen her in over 3 years. (but I do hope she's okay as she had terrible problems with TTC, which did confuse people who 'knew' me!)

I remember when SoupKitchen caused Soupy some distress...

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/03/2011 12:04

Jezza - was it fenellafadge by any chance?

bibbitybobbityhat · 08/03/2011 12:05

Yes, I get confused by the Nancys.

Except it always sticks in my mind that Nancy66 works for the Daily Mail.

GrapefruitDifficult · 08/03/2011 12:07

I'm a grown up. I can do this.

But I want you all to know that I am now off to bagsie all the awkward citrus fruit I can.

Don't even go there with the kumquat.

Yeah, lots of nancys. And Hats and Cheeses (of which, cheesesarnie is by far the bestest and cheesiest).

No, wasn't fenellafadge, was fanellefudge. Or was it? FenellaFadge would indeed have been a fab

cheesesarnie · 08/03/2011 12:14

Grin why thankyou jeremyvile!

ShowOfHonds · 08/03/2011 12:30

There is another psoter with a similar name to me, but i let it slide as she is not as witty or beautiful as me Wink

AlmaMartyr · 08/03/2011 12:40

Under my last name someone asked me to namechange because it was quite similar to theirs. They were very nice about it and I didn't mind at all - I think in the end I just added something to the name to make a distinction rather than changing completely.

The only thing that was a bit odd was that some people seemed quite angry on her behalf - it's not like I chose the name to upset her, I didn't even know there was someone with a similar name until I saw the thread.

Can't see the harm in asking myself, although it doesn't particularly bother me if people have similar names.

exexpat · 08/03/2011 12:46

I'd been on here a while before I realised that there was an established poster with expat in her name (expatinscotland) - someone did once ask if I was her - but we are really so different that I don't think it's an issue. She's certainly never PM'd me to complain. And there are a few other expats who pop up every now and again.

QueeferSutherland · 08/03/2011 12:59

BeerTricks, I was BrittantBeers until I saw a post of yours. Not too similar, but I wondered if we'd get mixed up.

QuintessentialShadow has the same initals, and I get easily confused if someone calls her QS.
There is a QS too which is not me, and I'm not sure it's Quint. It anoys me though.

Senua I have to admit that I did see your post on the other thread this morning and thought "how rude"!!!! Smile

Needanewname · 08/03/2011 13:10

No Quint was me and I am no longer due to the confusion!

CaptainNancy · 08/03/2011 13:51

Bibbety- re Nancys- I am the rude brusque one!
