What's the etiquette on other posters having very similar posting names to yours?

Should I mind? Should I chill?

There are a few other Lemons on here, and hey, I'm cool y'know. Not like this is my whole identity important or anything. Plenty of room in the fruit bowl.

The thing is I've noticed another LemonX around (can't actually remember what the X is, but similar length to Difficult, easily mistaken) and I think they're new and .... Is there a protocol?

It's not as if I read your name and think Lemon mumblemumblewhatever, so uness the Lemon-Other-Thing was Lemon-D-something it wouldn't confuse me.

Some people change a lot, so anyone with a name with Trinity in it would be mistaken for TrinityRhino (or whatever she's on at the moment) because you'd think it was another of her changes.

Some people's name I just don't read all the way through, for example I know PerArdua is PerArduaAdNauseum but anything beginning with that would end up the same in my head.

Needanewname · 08/03/2011 11:22

I used to be Quint but there is Quintessential on here and people used to shorten her name to Quint, used to piss me off a bit but wasn;t her fault and didn;t feel like I could ask her to change (felt a bit petty (waves at Quintessential)) I have now seen a couple of needa...... on here too but again, dont; feel like I can complain really, I've been on here for years under various names, but still dont; feel like a regular whose name people would mix me up with IYSWIM.

caughtinanet · 08/03/2011 11:25

Just seen someone on another thread ask a poster to change their name as it was similar and tbh it comes across as really arsey. The thread isn't about name changing , it just looks rude.

If I was the new posted I'd never post again after being publically told off.

ShatnersBassoon · 08/03/2011 11:29

There are that many users here, I very rarely recognise usernames, being as dim as I am. Only GabbyLoggon has managed to make his mark.

There could be someone with a similar name to mine, but I'll have just thought it was me and wondered what the shart I was on when I posted their thoughts Confused

senua · 08/03/2011 11:30

Aaargh. Caughtinanet was that me?Blush I thought that I had worded it nicely.

LemonDifficult · 08/03/2011 11:30

Yes, that's the thing - weeeeellll off to publicly say something to a newbie. Just so territorial and petty and ick. Don't want to be a twat.

No Senua, you did look very rude, tbh.

IngridBergmann · 08/03/2011 11:32

Yes it can sound really arsey. I think I started a thread a bit like this and then she found it and was horrified.

It's hard whatever you do but you can't just leave it in cae it does make people think you have seven children only half of whom you ever mention in one go, or you are pg when you're patently not, and stuff like that.

Needanew, I think this is why you need a new name...you want something people recognise.

Something that suits your MN longevity. Though saying that four years has gone VERY quickly, I still feel like a newb.

LemonDifficult · 08/03/2011 11:32

Which thread?

Senua, I feel for you!

OP posts:
SerenaJoy · 08/03/2011 11:34

BeerTricksPotter. I've just got your name.

[smacks forehead]

TrillianAstra · 08/03/2011 11:34

Lemon - if someone is very new and their name is very similar why not start a thread with their name as the title saying "If you post under that name people might make assumptions about you that are not true, based on things they've seen me write"?

Everyone will keep it bumped by piling in saying a selection from:
They're not that similar
How mean of you
I got you confused the other day
Hello NewLemonPerson
Oh so you're not pregnant then?

Senua, it may have been you, I can't remember which thread it was.

If it was I'm sorry but it did come over as rude to me.

senua · 08/03/2011 11:36

Oh dear.Sad

I noticed her on a thread and highjacked it to ask her to change but got no response (she had obv moved on) so I started the 'Oi!' thread in the hope that it might catch her attention. I didn't think anybody saw it cos it got no replies.Sad

LemonDifficult · 08/03/2011 11:37

And I could keep the whole thread bumped with tales of Cod and Moldies and ConnieD's flounce and SWMNBN and generally glory in my Rightful Place

OP posts:
IngridBergmann · 08/03/2011 11:37

LOL, trills Grin

I've just done that Sen. Smile sorry!

TallulahDoesTheHula · 08/03/2011 11:38

I think people who ask new posters to change their name because they are too similar always sound like arses tbh
Its only a posting name. Same as RL names - all these people getting offended when someone else dares to call their child the same name as theirs when its a perfectly usual name. Utter ridiculousness imo
Sorry

senua · 08/03/2011 11:39

Hey Trillian. Bump me! Grin

It was meant to be light-hearted but I obviously failed in my attempt.

cheesesarnie · 08/03/2011 11:39

i agree-tell them that they might be mistaken as the poster who started the pirate bumsex whilst drinking fruitshoots thread.that'll sort it!

Needanewname · 08/03/2011 11:39

I know IB, how about beenonhereforyears-honest!

IngridBergmann · 08/03/2011 11:40

But I got worried and it felt wrong. Sad

People were calling her 'flight' and when I searched (daily, of course) for people talking about me, all this odd stuff came up.

Instead of the usual glorious compliments about ME.

(joke)

DelicateFluffyBunny · 08/03/2011 11:44

Under one of my old names someone else joined/changed theirs to exactly the same but with an 's' on the end. This was long before the pm system and I didn't want to start a thread and come across as arsey so I contacted MNHQ and asked them if there was a protocol for this sort of thing - I assume MNHQ contacted the poster and pointed out how similar our names were as the person never posted again under that name.

Hope I didn't chase anyone off MN. Blush
