What is the point of the AIBU section?

It's been around for a while now and anyone can see it's become really gladiatorial.

It's frankly an absolute pit...it's dreadful.

I have had it hidden for months now which makes my personal MN a lovely place to be, but as soon as I venture into that topic I find myself wanting to leave the whole site.

There must be some way to offload it surely...why not have it as a spin off site, separate from MN? The thing is, many people who come here will see all the nonsense of it in active convos and likely be put off completely if they have any sensitivity whatsoever.

I think it's a disgrace and brings us all into disrepute. In fact I used to recommend MN to all and sundry, but now I am ashamed to because of AIBU being such an apparently popular and sizeable part of the site.

I don't know what to do about that. The rest of the place is pretty balanced. But it's like Jeremy Kyle Corner.

Did I flame anyone after saying that? I don't think so - I think I actually apologised for my rudeness, which was a reaction to a thread full of really horrible attacks from various people against each other.

I opened it, read it and felt so upset by it that I commented in the way you mention. I don't remember flaming anyone.

I will go and have a look.

No flaming

where are you getting this flaming idea from, AgentZigZag?

OP posts:
Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 13:07

Oh that was YOU! Wink

OP posts:
AgentZigzag · 08/09/2010 13:19

'Oh that was YOU!'

I think so Confused

I was lurking on the thread, and thought that MrsDoofenshmirtz came across as the most consistently arsey poster I've seen for a long while.

So I posted saying she could perhaps put it a bit better rather than just going on and on that the OP had no right to be judging someone else on their timekeeping.

And bugger me, here she is on this thread also saying she hates AIBU and it ruined her day! Really? So much so that she couldn't help herself repeatedly going back to flame the OP.

I suppose I just can't get my head round people complaining they hate this or that about MN and it's making their lives a misery, but are still here posting away as though someone's got a knife to their throat.

Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 13:28

See I'm not Mrs Doof. I'm flight. And I didn't flame anyone. I have no idea what MrsD did after I buggered orf.

I take your other point, but I did go, after a few minutes, and have not been back to read it since. Awful thread and my interjection killed it briefly but not properly (sadly) so didn't help much. Not that it was intended to help exactly..

anyway...I think MrsD got upset with you because you unleashed the swearing at her.

lol

AgentZigzag · 08/09/2010 13:47

Aparently MrsD was joking about me being sweary, I didn't get it though, duh Grin

It's Ok! Smile I did stare at it for a few minutes wondering what was going on though!

I'm not sure it won't still happen even without AIBU. I don't think MN was all that different before it appeared was it? There were always debates, and MN being the place it is, they got heated.

scottishmummy · 08/09/2010 20:09

flight folk always pipe up if you dont like mn,then go huns and hugs net.you dont like huns?how could i possibly know all your nuances and preferences. so dont get all persecutory and getting picked upon. of course i dont but you infer i do?how would that work.

Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 21:10

Oh leave it out SM, I assumed you knew me from my usual style of posting but I forgot your policy of never noticing posters.

I stand corrected.

Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 21:10

Brightlight that's a really good disclaimer. I like it.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 08/09/2010 21:11

behave, how would i possibly know your style.you are a bit precious you really are

Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 21:17

What?

That's a really odd thing to say. Precious in what sense?

I don't get it.

OP posts:
scottishmummy · 08/09/2010 21:19

what did you think of mnhq answer to your post

Flighttattendant · 08/09/2010 21:24

You keep telling me what I am and accusing me of being hyperbolic, daft, holding a faux moral highground, harrumphing, presumptuous, handwringing, playing at being Miranda Priestly, banging on, persecutory and being picked on. And now precious.

All in one thread.

I already replied to Justine, it's down there somewhere. I think I'm going to go to bed and have a shag.

Night SM Smile

flight,sleep well and calm dowm

AnnieLobeseder · 08/09/2010 22:41

Flight, I don't think I was missing your point at all, I think you are missing mine. As Justine has said, AIBU is the busiest board on MN. Lots of people use it and enjoy it. I only ever look in Active Convos, and from there I spot entertaining-looking AIBUs to read. If it were tucked away and we had to actually go and look for it, I don't think anyone would bother, and maybe go post in Chat (why does that have the at the start?) with AIBU in the thread title.

AIBU is very popular, it's not the minority who use it. If a board populated by a minority were dominating the Active Convos, then it might be fair to exclude it. But how can you ask to exclude a board populated by the majority just because you don't like it. Especially when you have the simple option of hiding it.

It's simple maths.

Lots of people like board, few don't = easier for the few can hide it.
Few people like board, lots don't = easier to remove from Active.

AnnieLobeseder · 08/09/2010 22:42

Aaargh, darn those underscores making things underlined!

I meant "_Chat".

Why does it have an underscore before it?

scottishmummy · 08/09/2010 22:48

ive never mastered the underscores bold is good as it gets

HelenMumsnet · 17/09/2010 18:13

Thanks for your suggested wording for amending the AIBU disclaimer BrightLightBrightLight

We have unashamedly plagiarised you.
