Did it hurt when you lost your virginity?

I found my first 2-3 sexual experiences absolute agony, and from the very few conversations I've ever had with friends on the topic in the subsequent 11-odd years, thought this was completely normal.

However, in a recent discussion with another friend she was bemused by this and said she experienced little or no pain. I was intrigued so took to the internet, and it seems (from such reputable sources as redit Hmm ) that this isn't uncommon. However, a lot of the other hits were clearly aimed at teenage girls and didn't want to scare the bejeezus out of them, so were much more coy.

I'd be interested in a straw poll of actual women. Did it hurt like hell at first, or was it just me?

yes.
he was very sweet about it but it really hurt. and was just a bit rubbish. didn't bleed, rode horses, used tampax... just one of those things

No, no pain, no bleeding, really good experience. I remember it (and him) quite fondly. And I wasn't a horse rider and had tried tampons and failed miserably. Could use them fine afterwards tho.

Yes it hurt and I bled a lot. Not like a period, very much like a deep cut. I had been using tampons for years, was very sporty and we very much ready.
The second time wasn't painful at all, but I still bled a lot. It was a bit of a pain waiting a few days to make sure I wasnt hurt and bleeding - I was a normal randy teenager sorry - the bleeding after sex stopped after a few more times.
But what is odd is I was celebate for around 5 years and had 4 DC before I met my now DH. I bled after the first couple of times we'd had sex too. I certainly wasn't a virgin then.
