Anyone up for a GCSE handholding thread?

DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

Tbh I think DD is just happy if she's heard of something, anything that's on the exam

She's knows to be vigilant to check she's got the correct paper and to make sure to check how many questions to answer and to read each page and each question properly

But these things are easily forgotten because your brain just goes into a heightened state of panic or all sorts or emotions and the invigilators aren't always on the ball about unusual cases.

so English yay, history yay, biology boo

Here it's English yay, Biology yay, History boo!

DD isn't aiming high mind she just wants a pass and a decent English mark as that's one of her A Level subjects

I really really hope though she does better than expected because she has tried her best and revised hard the last few months.

I was disappointed for her re Biology, she was in tears.

Now she's freaking out re higher maths tomorrow. I'm pretty sure she'll scrape a 4 which is all she needs.

HappiDaze · 18/05/2023 14:42

And maybe higher 🤞

HappiDaze · 18/05/2023 14:44

I going through a veritable emotional roller coaster with DD

It was nothing like this with DS who aced all his maths and science exams and was as emotional about it as a wet fish

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/05/2023 15:30

Some of them seem to put so much pressure on themselves. I've told DD that it would be good to do really well in her A level subjects plus pass Maths but the school have put on so much pressure that I'm not sure what I say has any effect.

TripleDaisySummer · 18/05/2023 15:33

DS home and says the history was fine - closer question gave no more information than that.

The maths department has been really good so he's confident with numeracy tomorrow - so we can possibly look at Monday's exam subjects tonight.

He's not been sleeping well - he's like DH prone to poor sleeping - all I can recommend is warm milk, cold shower before bed and spraying a mix of lavender and camomile all over his bedding which only seems to do so much for him.

Jowak1 · 18/05/2023 16:03

My son did history today and said it went ok but the way they worded the questions was as though they did it to confuse you! His history teacher agreed with him later on. He answered all the questions but this was the first exam ( he's done 3 so far) that he didn't say it went really well.

Jowak1 · 18/05/2023 16:04

He's currently singing like he's an opera singer in his room getting ready to study for his maths exam Tomorrow 🙈🤣 he can't be that bothered by the way it went!

Madcats · 18/05/2023 16:10

Well DD announced that she wants to change her A level choices last night.

That might not bode well for the subject she's decided that she no longer wants to do (but it is a less eccentric combo so hopefully easy to timetable).

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/05/2023 16:10

My DD said they hadn't even covered stuff for the first question on Crime and Punishment. But she's being philosophical and focussing on Maths for tomorrow.

Ds is Biology yah, English yay, history yay...

However I suspect his sights may be set rather low, so that's not necessarily indicative of the papers.

He did say there was a really good question on the history (WWI) and one that was really hard but he managed to write something which he reckoned would give him 4/12 on that question. When asked further he said they gave about that for SPAG.

Popstops82 · 18/05/2023 16:22

DS felt really happy about the edexcel History today. He's hoping for a 5. Maths is the big one for us tomorrow. He got a 4(just) in his mock.

Popstops82 · 18/05/2023 16:23

DS spelling never been good but no teacher has ever said it will effect his exams too much. Also I do worry about his handwriting as not too neat.

ladybee2 · 18/05/2023 16:28

Business was 'fantastic' apparently.
He said that it was the first Business exam including mocks that he'd actually finished the paper.

EarthlyNightshade · 18/05/2023 16:34

Business "really hard and really long" here. That was consensus of DS and his friends. Maths tomorrow, then it's the weekend!

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 16:34

Weekend followed by geography and chemistry… aargh!

pinkflop · 18/05/2023 16:37

I'm very proud of my DS. He's really stepped up to the plate this week and seems to be taking it in his stride. He's destined to get 4s, 5s and 6s but that's ok as he seems to be trying his best. Can't ask for more than that!

We're focusing on the weekend part for now!

TripleDaisySummer · 18/05/2023 16:43

DS has Geography and Chemistry Monday - first of only two days he'll have two exams so he hasn't done that badly with timetabling.

On plus side Geography finished teaching a while ago so he's had revision lessons and Chemistry is a strong subject but I suspect it will still be a long weekend - especially as it's physics later in week he needs to do well with.

Taswama · 18/05/2023 16:45

I have sent DS to revise some Chemistry this evening and then Geography tomorrow. A bit more of both plus a couple of other subjects on Saturday and then Sunday off.

dizzygirl1 · 18/05/2023 16:54

Exexcel for history medicine and business today, dd went off happy this morning. She's at her dad's and I've had a 'ill tell you later' response when i asked how they went (asking each day) so I'm a little nervous. She's tracked at an 8 so a lot to make up to. 😕

HippyChickMama · 18/05/2023 16:57

Apparently ds's history exam 'went ok', film studies he's really confident. He's predicted 9s for both and is doing both for A level so I'm hoping he's done well in both

doctorwhonerd · 18/05/2023 17:24

DD found History good thankfully!! So so stressed for Maths and Computing tomorrow honestly but she doesn't want to revise at all and I'm honestly just going to let her be because I doubt stressing and cramming the night before will do any good for her, she's definitely a more spaced out reviser. On Monday she just has Chemistry which she doesn't seem worried about so I'm choosing not to worry either. 😁
