Anyone up for a GCSE handholding thread?

DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

DD does lots of drama out of school and is still doing those things. She has a three hour thing on Saturday afternoons and decided early on that she would have Saturdays off completely. I am fine with that. She is working pretty hard the rest of the time, several hours a day, so I think she deserves some fun too. She also has a two hour thing on Thursday evenings and has just come back from that. She spent the afternoon in our local library working on Maths so she has done plenty today.

jamimmi · 18/05/2023 20:27

@overthehillswegoo absence reporting Still enforced here too, and ofstead are in! Poor staff. Dd has cut back in Tuesday dance for the exams but is being made to go tonhwr 2.5 hour Saturday class for a break. Chemistry & Geography Monday, history today and Maths tomorrow. She's just said she and all her friends from different schools are a bit worried it's been too easy so far!

iwantavuvezela · 18/05/2023 20:38

Another DD who thought AQA History was fair - so that's good - now for Maths which DD wants to do at A level so pressure is on as she has to have a 7 to get in (which is predicted and above) - there's some(emotional) history attached to Maths for her - her (late) father was a Maths whizz so she wants to do well in his name and for him - so really really hoping that it goes well for her as she has these other layers invested in it .

Does anyone know if Special Consideration is applied for do we get to to find out if the application has been successful and which exams it has been applied to?

Proudcarerr · 18/05/2023 20:56

Where did you all find your information about what's in the exams. A couple posters have found out what's in them before speaking to their children, I'm just interested. My ds nor taking his phone to school but I've had a nose on here before he's come home to see what's been in them!

If it's for a specific exam, it's done at the time.
If it's for more than one, it's done as a batch at the end.
I'm pretty sure you get told that it's been applied for, but nothing more than that.

BaconAndAvocado · 18/05/2023 20:58

iwantavuvezela DS2 also needs a 7 in Maths to get where he wants to be in September.
How lovely that your DD wants to follow in her father’s footsteps. I wish her well.

As echoed above, DS2 thought the AQA History paper was fair.

As well as Maths, he has Computer Science tomorrow poor lad!

Thank you. Whoever it was I spoke to at the school today just said they apply for all the special considerations after the exams have finished so I'm not sure how they will decide which exams to apply for, unless they ask DS how he is feeling before each exam to understand at what point he stops being poorly.

Same with DD 😫Two exams is bad enough but having those two paired together is really putting her down! She thinks tomorrow will be the worst after 4 days of pretty decent exams and we're trying to comfort her but she's so stressed!!!

MrsHamlet · 18/05/2023 21:01

@Hellocatshome sounds like that might be the approach they take!

OhhLaaLaa · 18/05/2023 21:02

Twitter usually, or the student room. I then have a couple of subtle questions for DD. She doesn't want to go over her answers so I don't quiz her too much, she just wants to keep moving forwards.

Good luck to all those with exams tomorrow!

POTC · 18/05/2023 21:07

doctorwhonerd · 18/05/2023 17:24

DD found History good thankfully!! So so stressed for Maths and Computing tomorrow honestly but she doesn't want to revise at all and I'm honestly just going to let her be because I doubt stressing and cramming the night before will do any good for her, she's definitely a more spaced out reviser. On Monday she just has Chemistry which she doesn't seem worried about so I'm choosing not to worry either. 😁

Another one with Maths and Computing here, only my son also has Ancient History which clashes with Computing so he has to take all 3 in one day.

POTC · 18/05/2023 21:12

Late to the thread but DS did History today. Just asked him about the date error and he said he thought it seemed wrong!
Tomorrow he has 5hrs 58mins of exam time, it's our most dreaded day of them all. Maths, 20 min break, Computer Science (brought forward from afternoon due to clash), 45min break, Ancient History. He gets extra time due to disability so it's longer than the one other student affected will be sat in exam rooms and is feeling like the extra time might actually be a disadvantage!

OhhLaaLaa · 18/05/2023 21:13

Sorry, my message was for @Proudcarerr

ElfDragon · 18/05/2023 21:20

Dd is mostly carrying on with extra curricular stuff. She isn’t having her instrument lessons this term, but has carried on with a musical theatre group, as well as school choir (there are a couple of competitions coming up) and school orchestra (she will be playing for the school play just after exams). Both the school groups are obviously very understanding that she may or may not be there over the next few weeks.

she has a show next weekend with her musical theatre group - not great timing, but she is managing to keep up so far, and is actually bearing up remarkably well, even with her ASD tendency towards perfectionism/catastrophising when perfection isn’t achieved.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/05/2023 21:33

Ds kicking off tomorrow with maths. He’s year 10 and still 14. It feels so young!

He’s not normally worried about maths but is definitely a little anxious tonight. He’s missed 3 extra curricular things this week, he was planning to go but hasn’t been feeling 100% so decided to give them a miss. He does have a full weekend away competing at his main sport so hopefully that will go well and with no injuries 🤞🏻

DarkChocHolic · 18/05/2023 21:45

Another maths and computer science here.
DD was sitting in bed sobbing away and wouldn't talk.
Told me to leave the room.
Not sure if it's exam nerves or something else. Her mental health hadn't been the greatest.
I went in to say good night and she was chilling with a pamper pack on.
Think that's best for tonight.
What ever will be will be.
Good luck to everyone for another day tomorrow
Xx

BonjourCrisette · 18/05/2023 21:51

Hope your DD feels better, @DarkChocHolic - mine has had a few sobs from time to time when it all gets on top of her.

Fingers firmly crossed for Maths tomorrow for everyone.

PamTheExam · 18/05/2023 21:59

Some kids including my own are looking at scraping a four or even just getting threes even with tuition etc. If your kid is likely to pass with a four or plus honestly you're blessed. They'll be fine. I've seen people saying "well maybe it'll just be a five or six" oh my god if only.

BonjourCrisette · 18/05/2023 22:29

That is exactly what I have been saying to DD, that she is extremely fortunate that she will probably do OK in all of them. I guess, though, whether your best is a 4 or a 6 or even a 9, they all want to do their best. Certainly all the pressure in this house is entirely self-generated by DD. I'm fine and don't care about the numbers and her school is not pressuring them unduly. I just somehow gave birth to a perfectionist.

GCSE Supporting - first week nearly over www.mumsnet.com/Talk/secondary/4809180-gcse-supporting-first-week-nearly-over

No idea if I've linked it correctly but I thought I'd start a new thread before this was full

Titsywoo · 18/05/2023 22:47

Also got maths and computer science tomorrow - luckily DS favourite subjects which he excels at so he is very laid back this evening. Probably over confident but I'll take that.

Dd has her first alevel written exam tomorrow and since she is going to Uni in Sept and needs 3 As for her firm choice the pressure is really on. So feeling far more nervous for her right now! Bring on the weekend!

jamimmi · 18/05/2023 22:49

@BonjourCrisette I have one of those perfectionists too. Putting no pressure on her she self-generates enough, just sent her to bed. @PamTheExam I totally agree with you her brother was a scrape a pass with help unlike DD. It's a very different experience this time. You just hope they feel they gave it their best shot. DS now happily at uni , only possible once 6th form picked up.his dyslexia!

BonjourCrisette · 18/05/2023 23:04

@jamimmi Sent mine to bed too!

BonjourCrisette · 18/05/2023 23:05

Good luck to the A Level gang as well!
