DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

@TheTurn0fTheScrew interested to know what board that is? Blake and Othello sounds tough - DDD’s A level texts!

It's Eduqas I think. I understand that Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet are set text options with the same board, and I am intrigued as to why they go with Othello, especially in a comp with a very mixed intake...

SirSidneyRuffDiamond · 18/05/2023 10:51

DS is just out of Edexcel History (Medicine Through Time) and messaged to say the 16 marker was on Thomas Sydenham - it was the main sub-topic he revised last night. What a lucky break.

WJEC Eduqas is Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth, Othello, much ado about nothing, Henry V or the merchant of Venice.

Interested to see there are others who had problems covering the history curriculum. Dd's school didn't start learning Superpower Relations until after Easter.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 11:13

Welcome @PennywisePoundFoolish and I understand and sympathise. Similar situation here, my dd is also ASD and her attendance started to go down in the first term of Year 10. Year 11 was slightly better but she’s still missed a lot of school. She’s bright and I hope she can wing it and get the grades she needs. Glad your ds on on board with getting help, my dd isn’t and still has her head in the sand 5 years after getting her ASD diagnosis ☹️

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 11:14

Waiting for dd to come out of History. Her school also finished the syllabus very late.

mumonthehill · 18/05/2023 11:19

Ds has messaged to say the history paper was good. Hope that means he had revised what came up! Year 10 take English lit here and he said walking through them yesterday gave him flash backs to last year!!!

Neversaygoodbye · 18/05/2023 11:21

DS said history was solid!

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/05/2023 11:37

Dd's school didn't start learning Superpower Relations until after Easter.

Same for DD with the Normans (or Vikings? Not sure which it was.).

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/05/2023 11:43

History today is Crime and Punishment. She really liked history in YRs 7-9 but GCSE has apparently been much less enjoyable, so she's not relishing this one.

Yes and this^ DD loved History in the earlier years (helped by loving HH on TV) but the GCSE has really sucked the joy out of it for her. Now it's just learning facts and dates (in a hurry!).

Covidisdrivingmecrazy · 18/05/2023 12:10

Gcse history edexcel broke and punishment I got "wasn't as bad as I thought it would be". She was super anxious about it. She's a high achiever but struggling to even pass history and it has totally killed her love of history. Thanks a lot Michael Gove Angry

Titsywoo · 18/05/2023 12:14

Ds said aqa history was good. 20 marker on events in the 1960s for cold war. Germany only had a 12 mark question (he didn't say what on).

minisnowballs · 18/05/2023 12:20

Medicine through time- OK. Didn't like that there was a big chunk on modern medicine (not her favourite) and struggled to know enough on Thomas Sydenham. Basically OK though. Poor child has an orthodontist appointment now (at hospital so we don't have a lot of choice). Praying they don't tighten things too much so it's sore for tomorrow (maths)

kidstaxidriver · 18/05/2023 12:49

Well done to all those getting in when they’ve had a really tricky time, and also for coming out intact! Great stuff

ladybee2 · 18/05/2023 13:11

DS said that History was pretty good.
He's in Business Studies now.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 18/05/2023 13:21

DD said first question (History) was awful so she wasn't disappointed😬but she relaxed after that because she thought she had nothing else to lose. Thankfully they've done a lot more work on the American stuff and Weimar Germany plus a couple of weeks until those papers.

Homeworkhell82 · 18/05/2023 13:27

I hope there were questions on Galen, four humours etc...

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 13:28

Aaargh, DS1, why are you asking me NOW to print revision materials??

Taswama · 18/05/2023 13:30

Yes of course dear and grit your teeth!

DS1 asked me yesterday if I could get him the poetry anthology to listen to. (it’s on audible and I suggested it several months ago)

DS2 said - ‘Who are you and what have you done with my brother?’ 😂

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 13:31

😀😀

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 13:38

Obviously I asked him weeks ago when I could have printed stuff double sided in the office rather than on our handcrankef ancient HP…’

PennywisePoundFoolish · 18/05/2023 13:43

Thanks for the welcome.

DS2 said History went badly and he had no idea what they wanted?, which I'm not surprised about. His was America 1920-1960 and British 1920-1939.

He was looking dejected but was not a hysterical sobbing mess a la mocks, so a win of sorts. Just hoping it hasn't knocked him back too much for the rest of the exams.

@bendmeoverbackwards much sympathies to you. Hopefully the post 16 choices will lift some stress. Ds2 is not enjoying the therapy, he's always been too? compliant, so is attending because i take him. The counsellor has recommended medication as he's unable to express any likes/wants/make decisions, his mood and self-esteem are rock bottom.

I feel horribly guilty as DS1 and DS3 both also ASD but diagnosed young and EHCPs etc in place. DS2 was my model NT child who loved school etc. Except that was not at all the case and he unravelled badly. He is all about maths, it's a huge part of his identity and I am desperately willing the universe to let him study it at A Level somehow.

littlequestion · 18/05/2023 14:07

According to Twitter there was a big mistake with a date on the ExExcel medicine paper - a date out by a mere 100 years. DS not home yet. Has anyone else heard this?

HappiDaze · 18/05/2023 14:21

DD was ok with History today because it was modern medicine so 2 out of 3 not bad. Hopefully her next Biology exam will be better than the disastrous one on Tuesday, so English yay, history yay, biology boo

DuckyLuck · 18/05/2023 14:31

Only Film Studies here this afternoon - DS said classes would be empty this morning as almost everyone else would be taking History and he doesn't! Then Maths and Computing tomorrow. Can't wait for this week to be over, he is exhausted!
