Anyone up for a GCSE handholding thread?

DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

Total maths meltdown just now. Sigh.

christmastreefarm · 18/05/2023 17:26

History went well - 16 marker on Peel which she choose. Said all her friends picked the other option though.

I think she's beginning to realise that despite her fears she is actually fairly well prepared.

According to Twitter there was a big mistake with a date on the ExExcel medicine paper - a date out by a mere 100 years. DS not home yet. Has anyone else heard this?

Definitely true. Mistake on the History of Medicine paper on the Thomas Sydenham question.

We are going to need a thread part 2 soon as they can only hold 1000 messages so we are nearly at capacity!

Yes same :(

We've been having one of those all week!

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 18:50

That sounds tough @PennywisePoundFoolish I wish your ds every success.

ElfDragon · 18/05/2023 18:51

Think it’s more a case of maths denial here. Business studies today went really well, apparently, so the general vibe of doing ok continues. I think, as another poster said, she may be beginning to reap the rewards of being prepared.

she is worried about math tomorrow, as thinks that everything has been going too well so far, so she is due a tough exam. Fingers crossed it’s a paper she can tackle well enough.

naughty40me · 18/05/2023 18:52

DS found history "easy" he chose the question about medicine improving over time or some such.

I also worry about his handwriting, not flagged by any teachers and it is readable but I struggle sometimes with it....been reminding him to write as clear as possible for the examiners!

No revision tonight he's too tired.

What he doesn't know by now isn't worth it.

Maths and Computer Science tomorrow then a long lie in on Saturday!.

Waking up before 6am everyday is so not the norm for us! lol

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 18:54

Dd was reasonably pleased with History I think. She’s not feeling 100% now, hope it’s nothing. Might give her some paracetamol.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 19:07

What is everyone’s dc doing about extra curricular activities during exams? Cut down or nothing at all? Dd does a lot of dance and cut down to about half her classes this term. But she’s been too tired to go even to those.

Neversaygoodbye · 18/05/2023 19:08

We're also doing maths and computer science tomorrow - DS least favourite subjects. I've told him to focus on the maths.
Good luck every one.
DD first A level exam tomorrow, really feeling the pressure for her.

TeddybearBaby · 18/05/2023 19:11

I haven’t cut down on any extra curricular activities but DS is on study leave so makes it easier for him to continue with hobbies in the evening because he has been able to revise during the day. I feel it’s important to have balance and he doesn’t do much atm tbf, just training a couple of nights a week and a game or two at the weekend.

DD goes to borough youth orchestra on Friday nights, and conservatoire juniors on Saturdays, so practice is normally non negotiable. However she hasn't picked up either of her instruments this week, and I'm not pushing it. She'll still attend on Friday and Saturday, just without practice in between.

bendmeoverbackwards · 18/05/2023 19:16

Dd has a monthly dance associates class on Sunday which she’s planning on going to. I’ve said it’s good to do something different for a bit, especially physical activity. She also has classes Saturday morning but I’m not too hopeful about those, she’ll need to sleep!

Hellocatshome · 18/05/2023 19:17

DS only trains once a week and a game on Saturday so he is continuing at least he was until he got shingles we will have to see how he feels on Saturday. He is still going to the gym for an hour every evening as he needs some time away from the books.

My younger DS is a swimmer and the ones in his squad doing GCSEs are still there every morning before school and every evening after school they must be exhausted.

mumonthehill · 18/05/2023 19:17

Ds not going to his music lesson on Monday but is still doing sports training as he has races coming up. He is definitely wanting to revise.

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 19:21

DS1 still doing squash Sunday afternoon but not evening trainings.

christmastreefarm · 18/05/2023 19:21

My daughter has basically said they are no harder than her mocks (she had 3 sets) - I take that to mean the school had pitched them at the right level - is that the same with everyone else or are they finding it a step up?

SheilaFentiman · 18/05/2023 19:24

Maths meltdown corrected - he did a second practice paper, slowed down a lot and didn’t make the silly mistakes.

it means he’s done no comp sci yet but I have kicked him out of the door for a walk anyway.

Hersetta427 · 18/05/2023 19:29

Dd is lucky - she only does one sport (but national team standard) and the season is over already so training has stopped although her coach is running a 2 hr skills session tomorrow which she is going to. She has passed over county training on Saturday though to revise but we are in the lucky position where her making the team is a given.

WinterMermaid234 · 18/05/2023 19:35

My DD trains 4d a week just missed one session this week due to the late training finish and a 9am exam. The physical exercise does her good to destress but she’s very tired mentally and didn’t want to go in today as she didn’t have an exam but school are still enforcing absence reporting 😬and a full timetable of lessons! Makes me cross as in her best interest would be to revise at home not in a class with kids messing around and being noisy!

SilverGlitterBaubles · 18/05/2023 19:37

DD has come down with a cold, feeling pretty miserable on top of dreading Maths tomorrow.

My DD does sport at high level and would usually train three or four times per week. This week she attended only one training but went for a 5k run after school today just to get a break from exams/ revisions and keep fit and expects to do the same on Saturday and Sunday. It’s a tricky balance and she’s had to say no to taking part in a tournament on Sunday which would have been all day. With geography and chemistry on Monday she just didn’t think it was the right decision to participate. But she also knows she wants to do some exercise or training to keep up.

overthehillswegoo · 18/05/2023 19:41

@WinterMermaid234 does absence reporting matter now though?
