Anyone up for a GCSE handholding thread?

DS2 has his GCSEs in June. He had mocks in November and more (why??) next month.
He needs to get 5 6s to stay at his current school (IB, not overly keen) or to transfer to another local 6th form.
He said he’s going to start revising this week......
Think his school will be helping him devise a revision timetable this week. I’ve bought him flashcards, he just needs to knuckle down now.......

I honestly wouldn’t put it past my DC to have it wrong! We’re very disorganised.
We’ve got Macbeth and Poetry Anthology for WJEC
who needs 18 poems anyhow? 😂🤦‍♀️

SheilaFentiman · 16/05/2023 21:27

Same (see above screenshot!)

clary · 16/05/2023 21:33

Yeh the specs vary. Many schools do AQA but not all. Iirc Edexcel paper one is Shakespeare and 20th century.

kidstaxidriver · 16/05/2023 21:34

Thanks! Panic moment 😂

bendmeoverbackwards · 16/05/2023 21:41

@clary I can’t believe J&H is a university text! The pressure we are putting on these kids.

SheilaFentiman · 16/05/2023 21:43

Yeah, I had a book which was a young adult focussed one, it was actually enjoyable to read!

kidstaxidriver · 16/05/2023 21:45

I’d give anything got To Kill a Mockingbird again………. How on Earth our kids are learning to love English through J and H is beyond me!

coolcahuna · 16/05/2023 21:45

DS1 had Biology today and his verdict was ' good, no surprises'. He's extremely relaxed about it all which could be brilliant or a disaster!

kidstaxidriver · 16/05/2023 21:45

Sorry terrible English 😂 let’s hope he writes better than me on my
phone!!

I can solve that for you - mine hates it! 😀

Tbf she wrote an in-depth essay on homosexuality in the text “look, this word here indicates it” - all the letters with hidden messages (very hidden if you ask me!) - but I think even looking at simpler themes it’s a challenging text and wouldn’t be my pick.

She did Frankenstein for GCSE mind you which is tough too. But this was a top set - weaker sets did ACC.

Dd is exhausted. She’s been up at 5am today and yesterday for last minute revision. She is getting ready for bed now which is normally unheard of (she’s a night owl). She’s worried about tomorrow especially Class Civ but I’m hoping she’ll do well enough in her other subjects 🤞

Homeworkhell82 · 17/05/2023 06:15

Good Morning
Emglish Lit today. His worse Subject
All the post it notes will be gone later yay!

Homeworkhell82 · 17/05/2023 06:20

I should I say the ones for MC and CC, then replaced with the poems and Inspector Calls.

kidstaxidriver · 16/05/2023 18:54

DC just having a panic and over the table said “if the Macbeth essay is about kingship I’ve got nothing to write”……. Nothing like last minute YouTube Dr Salles!! 😂🤦‍♀️

I read your comment and quickly looked up the video to show DS!!

mumonthehill · 17/05/2023 06:43

Good luck to those with English lit this morning, will be interesting to see whose predictions came up in the paper. Ds sat it last year but we have the joy of PE this afternoon. Yesterday afternoon in the revision session his PE teacher just upped and walked out, fed up with them apparently!!!

minisnowballs · 17/05/2023 06:57

Dd delighted with Edexcel biology (not the igcse - but triple) - a friend told her to look at the reflex arc which she had forgotten all about since taught in year 9 and she was delighted by her six marker on it.

latin language ‘ok’… reckons she dropped a mark on grammar which means she’s dropped more than one mark- and couldn’t remember what ‘igitur’ meant.

Christmas Carol and Macbeth today. She’s hoping for kingship and praying there’s nothing on Banquo. I’m hoping it’s not too disastrous as it’s a favourite subject and a bad paper will throw her.

My son will check but does anyone child take highlighters in to use on question paper?

My daughter has some in her pencil case

Northernlurker · 17/05/2023 07:37

My dd takes some. She says school recommended it.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 17/05/2023 07:57

Are your kids allowed watches in exams? Ds was allowed to wear one in his January exam, the letter said no smart watches and his is a basic Casio one.

Now he’s not allowed to wear one at all which is a pain as it helped him pace himself.

I think watches are now generally banned because of smart watches.

No because so many are smart now. Can he see the clock ok in the exam room?

CC and Much Ado About Nothing here.
DS2 was reluctant to attend an 8am booster....when a lift was offered (insisted on) he had no choice 😀
