Any of your DS doing the Hampton Test today? I feel more anxious than my son, I need some hand holding!

Yes different at 11+. At our prep school the success rate is definitely higher for those doing 13+. However that maybe as prep schools don’t really prepare for 11+.

At 11+ half of those interviewed end up with a place not sure how that compares at 13+.

One advantage of 13+ is that you don’t have to wait so long to find out if you have an interview or not!Smile

LittleOwl · 06/02/2019 07:55

In terms of odds - 11+ and 13+ are roughly the same.
250 for 50 places at 13+, according to the school yesterday, is actually slightly worse than the numbers quoted for 11+.

Prufrockspeach · 06/02/2019 09:03

I was confused by the numbers...I thought that there was 200 in a year group so why so few for 13+.....i was also a bit “mmmm” when they said they didn’t really over offer as surely many boys who get a place will be choosing between rgs and kcs too.....? Is it all PR to make us want thenplaces even more?

Poppyred25 · 06/02/2019 11:30

Prufrock - current year 1 at Hampton is 6 x 24 = 144 ish. They will reduce offers for 13 plus to get to 200, ie tiny 12 plus offering and not going to wait list. Hampton lose to Tiffin at 11 but less so to RGS / KCS (KCS 11 entry still seen as too new).

Prufrockspeach · 06/02/2019 12:09

That’s interesting to know - last time we went through the process the numbers were bigger at 13+ but I guess it’s all changing as lots of prep schools are only going to 11 nowadays....and the “favourite schools” are also changing year on year too. We had a few very bright sporty boys last year who turned down Hampton and RGS to go to St Johns or Epsom.....

Poppyred25 · 06/02/2019 13:34

Yes I agree re sport esp as at Hampton you have to choose between football & rugby & there is no hockey.

gameflight · 06/02/2019 19:19

Little owl 50 for 250 is 1 in 5. At 11+ we were told by school 120 for 700 for 120 places so that is 7/35 at 13 vs 6/35 at 11 slightly better at 13 but not as much as we first thought. For 11+ they interviewed 160 so double who they will give places too.

Poppyred25 · 06/02/2019 20:08

Problem with current year 1 is they received too many yes replies before 1 March 2018 so had just over 5 classes of acceptance before deadline on 1 March (when there is so much movement), in the end they went to waitlist to fill the 6 classes. Same at LEH, they have 6 x age 11 classes this year due to over acceptance. At the same time KGS had the "exact" number of acceptances that they wanted (so they told parents) and didn't have the over acceptance of previous years - the current KGS first year is slightly smaller than previous. It must be so hard to predict for the registrars.

Poppyred25 · 06/02/2019 20:30

The good news for those waiting for 13 plus offers for 2021 is that Hampton will probably tighten up on their 11 plus offers to keep to 5 classes or 120 places as suggested by the school.

gameflight · 06/02/2019 20:56

Indeed our son is going for the 11+ Entry and we were told by head that he will not do what happened last year ie have a 6th class

Starlilly88 · 06/02/2019 21:50

I heard from a mum today that there were only 40 places at 13+. So are they holding lots back for 12+?

Testbunny · 06/02/2019 21:52

KGS had 'exploding offers' last year, hence managed to keep the class sizes down. They are on a small site so can't add another class

MGMidget · 06/02/2019 22:13

I also heard 40 places for 13+ this year which surprised me as the website said 65 places so I'd assumed they would offer more and then make offers at 12+ where they had spaces from those who declined the 13+ offer by the deadline of next January. However, they have said they are holding back places for 12+.

gameflight · 14/02/2019 15:38

The wait is almost at an end. It seems to have gone on forever....

Poppyred25 · 15/02/2019 13:01

Good luck to you all waiting for the post, I hope it's good news.

LittleOwl · 18/02/2019 10:46

Morning all - hope you got positive news. We were lucky and got a yes from Hampton. Do any of you know how good Hampton is with coding and stuff? It was never our preferred choice, so am a bit scrambling around about getting to know the school...

Poppyred25 · 18/02/2019 12:04

@LittleOwl , if you look at the Hampton website you can see the gcse results for last year listing the subjects they teach. Yes they do teach coding for 1 lesson a week in first year but the emphasis in all schools that take in more dc at 13 is the focus on modern Lang & Latin as those joining in year 9 are learning these subjects in their prep schools . This is common across all schools with 11 and 13 entry points.

Thesunalwaysshines · 18/02/2019 12:12

Hampton is supposed to have a great rep for computer science and coding, more so than some other schools, I believe. Not all do it once a week as the previous poster has said

Galaxygirl38 · 18/02/2019 12:37

Hampton do some coding in their computer lessons and also in Design Technology. There are lots of clubs available at lunchtime including drone club & robotics club.

LittleOwl · 18/02/2019 12:58

Thank you, much appreciated

BeaglesAbout · 24/04/2019 15:32

If anyone chooses Hampton they'll be more than happy with their choice. We have two sons there (both very different) and both love it.
If your son is bright he'll be fine.

Just be aware the school is fast-paced and assumes above average ability to keep up with the pace.
DS2 is not at all sporty so don't be put off by suggestions it's only for super sporty boys (although SS boys will have a great time).
As to scholarships - your boy is gonna need to be absolutely stellar to have any shot at those. And I mean top 1% in the country-type stellar.

FreeSpiritWithin · 04/11/2020 08:39

Hi all, I found this thread today and it was so informative about Hamptons. So first of all thank you to all of you who discussed. My question is about Hampton Pre-Prep - my son has got a place in Year 1 (there were a couple of spaces that came up) and although he is in a very good Pre-Prep already (Falcons Pre Prep), we are considering switching schools. Do you think this would be a wise step considering we wanted him to sit 7+ next year end?
You all have a lot more experience so wanted to know what you thought.
Thank you so much in advance x

Ripple11 · 04/11/2020 11:42

Do you live near Chiswick?....is travel time/distance at all relevant ?

orcadive · 05/11/2020 11:10

@FreeSpiritWithin did you want him to sit Hampton 7+ next year? If so it seems an obvious choice to avoid that and just take the place now. Despite the fact that the 7+ is for young children, the tutoring, prep and trying for spots can be very intense and competitive. Not sure why you would want that if you are given a free pass!

FreeSpiritWithin · 05/11/2020 12:17

@orcadive - Thank you so much for your response. Yes I am extremely tempted to take up the free pass only to avoid the 7+ situation. However, we had never thought of Hamptons until someone mentioned it recently and thats when we called up to ask about 7+ registration and got to know about the Year 1 space. We havent even seen the school due to Covid rules and dont think will get to see the school before we accept the offer. This is why I thought of looking up for Hamptons on mumsnet to get an idea of what the school is like. However most of the information is about the senior school and I wanted to know more about the Prep Smile
