Mother seeking advice on secondary education. My 14 year old son attends an Austrian school which will lead him to take the Austrian Matura.

Can anyone explain the benefits of a the Austrian Matura over the International Baccalaureate?

Is it harder/easier? Does it open doors to get into a good British University?

I am looking for advice from any mum who is experiencing the headache of giving quality education to teenagers!

Am thankful for your tips.

Regards

Cherryburn · 15/06/2018 06:19

Joyxmo I think you’d be better starting a new thread with your question in the title. That way you’ll get a broader response than just the people on this thread. If anyone on here can help I’m sure they will though.

Sost I love that song!

Kingscote that’s shocking about Edexcel targeting primary teachers for marking. I thought markers were meant to teach the subject/be familiar with the syllabus?

The day has finally dawned! Last exam for DS. Good luck to all today.

BlueBelle123 · 15/06/2018 06:49

I'm not still dreaming am I this is actually the 15th June and the day of my DS's last GCSE !!!!!!!!!! Good luck everyone!

Kingscote love what your bunny is able to do with his ears Grin

BlueBelle123 · 15/06/2018 06:51

Hope those with health problems and family traumas are still holding up well Flowers

InMySpareTime · 15/06/2018 07:06

Last day for DS, I'm encouraging him to put loads of moisturising cream on his chest so he doesn't end up tattooed with sharpie from shirt signing later!

PeggySchuylar · 15/06/2018 07:11

Last night after I thought DD was asleep i found her staring blankly at a physics past paper wailing, "I can't do it."

Turns out the question (WJEC board) was on latent heat energy and she had completely missed it. We taught ourselves it quickly from the revision guide and she went to bed sad.

She is resitting having got a C in P1 last year so it's hard as it was taught a ling time ago, if at all.

On the bright side. It is the end. Que sera and all that. I'm meeting a friend for bteakfast after we have dropped our DDs at exam.

Is the 21st the end for eberyone here? Thinking of you all with German, DT and FM ahead. Gin

LooseAtTheSeams · 15/06/2018 07:21

Last day for us - DS is refusing the porridge he's had before every other exam (so Physics is clearly doomed) but I am going to show him the Emotional Assistance bunny photo before he goes to help him along! Grin

GettinTrimmer · 15/06/2018 07:22

Morning all

Good luck to everyone with the dreaded Physics today Brew

Ds did not do very well in Chemistry mock but after constantly watching the man call Sean against the blue background on Freesciencelessons on YouTube he said he got it and feels Science has been 'OK.'

TheThird He finishes next week with German, congratulations to everyone finishing today Star Not much German revision has been done.

sost I laughed at your caviar experience! Do you still play any instruments?

Inmysparetime ds has hidden his signed shirt in his room, I suspect there are some rude comments on it that he doesn't want me to see!

Kingscote thanks for destressing rabbit pictures...how cute!

Does anybody else have ds/dd with absolutely no idea at this stage of career path? Ds has chosen subjects he feels he will enjoy at least that's something. I am hoping 6th form will help build his confidence.

Eve · 15/06/2018 07:31

Last day here as well and even more exciting we go on holiday tomorrow!

Only 2 week gap that we could find in boys summer schedule between festivals and various camps!

TerfTerfTerf · 15/06/2018 07:37

DS1 grumpily said "it's a bunny. It doesn't help" Confused

DS2 overslept and is also grumpy.

My early gym class is cancelled so I now have no motivation to get up and do anything. But I must strim the garden. Sad

Teenmum60 · 15/06/2018 07:38

Good luck to everyone today ...

TGIF....and we are off to see he Play That Goes Wrong this evening which will hopefully bring some light relief...

slinkyme · 15/06/2018 07:42

Best of luck to all finishing the exams today and summer plans kicking off. It's been a long hard slog and you and all your DC have made it. As I tell my DD this will be the best time as exams are done, results are far away and next years Work hasn't begun - so enjoy.

She still has one more on Tuesday.

Yesterday I printed loads of papers she did 2. Last paper got near on perfect results and started to do the next paper and then realised that she can't answer it and needs to instead revise from her text book. Had to send her to bed eventually.

She is looking tired today and ready to finish now. Even she has been saying that. 2 more to go. 2 more to go.

Sostenueto · 15/06/2018 07:49

cherrybun glad you liked the song its the one I was playing on 46 years ago!Smile

Good luck all last day thank goodness! Can't believe its all over! Very grumpy dgd here today but when she gets home about 12 o clock no dentist but off to London!!! She will be so surprisedGrin even dd over excited this morning ringing me when dgd on train saying what they are going to do.
Not holding out about physics today enthusiasm very low. But sure she won't give up at finishing line!

mmzz · 15/06/2018 07:56

DS did a physics past paper last night and it did not go well. He has been really badly taught and I only got the extent of it last night when I was marking the past paper. I'm praying for a paper full of calculations today because that's the only way he can get the 7 he needs, unless the grade boundaries are low.

HesMyLobster · 15/06/2018 07:57

Morning everyone - just caught up on last nights antics!
Sostenueto I loved all your music stories - you need to start that book, pronto!

Last Day!! 🎉🎉🎉
DD is going for celebratory lunch after the exam with her friends, then straight to a "revision notes bonfire party" at a friends house so I won't see her until tonight.

Must remember to get that last school uniform photo.

Good Luck Physicists!!

Sostenueto · 15/06/2018 07:58

I bet there will be free flowing alcohol in all your households this weekend ladies ( and gents)Grin

mmzz · 15/06/2018 08:04

Don't forget the last day photos!

sandybayley · 15/06/2018 08:07

I can confirm that DS1 has left the house for physics. With only Ad Maths to go he is feeling almost demob happy - he must be as he's playing cricket tonight and tomorrow Hmmand we have Father's Day BBQ on Sunday.

I have the day off today and have gym/gardening/charity shop run/admin to do. Such a lovely day and the end is definitely in sight!

Jinglebells99 · 15/06/2018 08:07

My dd loved the photo of the emotional support bunny, and asked where hers was, lol.
I’ve been lurking for a little while. Thought I’d say hi. My dd is doing German though, so she still has exams Mon and Thurs. And Physics today.

DevaDiva · 15/06/2018 08:20

DD has tentatively agreed that she does in fact know some Physics Confused she has also begrudgingly allowed me to take a last day photo. I'm working from home today and threatened to take one of her and her friends when they come back here later, I might still do that Grin

Good luck everyone for today.

calzone · 15/06/2018 08:33

Physics and compulsory Citizenship today.

Don’t think ds cares anymore......🤣🤣

German and Citizenship on Monday.
German LESSON on Tuesday
Day off on Wednesday
German on Thursday

Then we are done!!!!!

LooseAtTheSeams · 15/06/2018 08:34

Forgot to take a photo- will catch him later!
Good luck to all the dcs with exams today and for those with a few more to go - you are nearly there!

Cherryminx · 15/06/2018 08:38

Delurking to wish all your DCs good luck today - have just waved off my DS to Physics. Still has FM next week but this feels like the whoo-hoo day for many.

Have a great weekend all - I've enjoyed reading and feeling that out there there are other mums & DCs going through the same thing.

hmcAsWas · 15/06/2018 08:46

Morning all, I've read every post since last contributing but am in a car park on the phone so don't have my usual pen and paper to name check (so may forget who said what!)

Loved reading the youthful adventures of Sost, and discovering Eve's naughty side!

Congrats to all who have finished exams already - a few more of us will be joining you a bit later, and commiserations to those who have to plough on into next week

I've found a few things quite alarming - primary school teachers marking papers, the merry-go-round of teachers at Jufus school and reports of poor teaching - eek

Re whether I would encourage DD to live at home for University - I think she would get more out of it (the social side in particular) if she went away, but I wouldn't be a purist over it - if local uni was an excellent course then so be it.

Teenmum I would be interested to hear how you find 'The Play That Goes Wrong'

Good luck everyone with physics today. DD was cultivating a studied nonchalance, but she must be stressed underneath because she yelled at me and called me a terrible mother for not dropping her at the front entrance to school and giving her further to walk (she was carrying bags of textbooks to return). Meh
