sqa exams 2023

So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

It's getting very close, isn't it.
Though you wouldn't think so if you saw my ds.

Rae36 · 10/04/2023 15:41

Highers ds is working quite hard here, seems quite organised and motivated. He's only doing 3 though so he should be organised.

Nat5 ds is doing big fat zero. He got a bit of a shock in his predicted grades but he seems to have forgotten all about that and is off playing football. I'm reminding and suggesting but apart from that just leaving him to it.

user143777534 · 10/04/2023 16:11

Highers DS quite stressed about everything here.

RollOnJune23 · 10/04/2023 16:26

I am the only one stressed in my household

Aurea · 10/04/2023 17:54

My DS is doing four advanced highers in S6 and is working hard although he seems quite chill. Hope this continues. He has an unconditional offer for uni so this takes the pressure off.

Chompiemompie · 10/04/2023 18:07

Another one here!
Dd doing Nat 5s.
She didn't come on holiday with us over easter, supposedly staying behind to study. Hmmm there was alot of pottering and meeting friends...
School did have study school but have cancelled this as school closing for repairs. Gah.

She is quite chilled, resting on her prelim results which were good. Her maths was dire and I am just hoping she scrapes a pass.

It's 3 weeks until her first one.

NicolaSturGONE · 10/04/2023 18:20

DD says she is back at school for 3 days then study leave starts. A bit pointless going in for 3 days if you ask me.

Ours are back in for a week. I'm quite glad actually because they're sort of in holiday mode here. Hopefully a week of school will focus their minds a bit on exams instead of just hanging around in the sunshine with a bit of revision here and there

StoorieHoose · 10/04/2023 20:30

My dad is back for a week before study leave starts. She thinks it’s a waste of time and would be better at home following her own study plan

MistressIggi · 10/04/2023 22:44

From a teacher's perspective, these few extra days next week can be very important in finishing off N4 assessments and catching up with students who you think might have missed revision notes or need a bit of extra help. The exams seem to be starting earlier than normal this year too.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 15/04/2023 12:58

My son’s start on 4 May and finish on 25th. 5 highers having attained 7 As at National 5. His chemistry was his weakest after his prelim but he has a tutor now and seems to be on track to do OK. He’s been working quite hard during the holidays. Only a few short weeks to go and it will all be over. And then the interminable wait until August for results. Good luck all.

spiderplantparty · 16/04/2023 11:22

I'm just keeping my fingers crossed my DC passes nat 5 maths. He's been doing a lot of work but whether or not it pays off will be another matter.

Survey99 · 16/04/2023 16:22

Wee tip for next year - go onto the SQA website in the next couple of weeks and download the older past papers/marking instructions/audio files for subjects they are planning to sit in S5/S6 before they are removed when they upload this years papers.

(A friend was talking about the lack of past papers to practise with yesterday, and I sent her some I had save from when ds did them)

storminamooncup · 16/04/2023 19:42

Teachers tend to already do this I think. DD complains she's done all the past papers on the SQA site in school and also says that teachers have some older ones too. There are a few other websites, if you google practice papers, where teachers have created test papers themselves that they use with either students or kids they tutor. There's the quizlet website where people have created English flashcards which DD has found useful for researching her texts. Also youtube videos that teachers created during lockdown are still there. I'm already thinking ahead for next year - there's a useful website for RMPS which DD will be taking for Higher (she hasn't done the N5) and there's also a free SQA maths website with lots of resources that she can use for Higher Maths. She'll be keeping her English tutor for Higher English. So I think in terms of resources, she'll be fine, it'll just be getting her to actually USE them! Does anyone know when the 'how to pass' books are back on sale? They don't seem to have updated them for a few years?

Threeboysadogandacat · 19/04/2023 01:20

Ds is back this week then off on study leave. I expect he will spend most of his time studying in school (or Costa) as did for his Nat 5’s. He’s sitting 6 highers and got AABBBB for his prelims. I’m trying to impress upon him that a little “push” now could make all the difference but he smiles, agrees and then does his own thing.

sunshineonleven · 19/04/2023 07:33

Highly recommend this site if you are needing older past papers for and more detailed answer explanations for chemistry at all levels. It's got answers back to 2000 and papers back to the 70s!

https://jabchem.org.uk

They also have a fair bit for maths and other sciences linked in one place too.

MistressIggi · 19/04/2023 07:58

Be careful about older past papers, a lot of courses were restructured around 2018 so could get a false idea of what can come up.

NicolaSturGONE · 20/04/2023 20:39

DD is now on study leave, last day of S4 was today. She's got about 12 days til her 1st exam. Her BF has his first exam on Tuesday which I think is Geography. Both of them are studying hard and sick of past papers. DD is raging cause she's found out two of her favourite teachers are not taking the Highers she's picked for next year. I did warn her not to pick Highers based on which teacher she liked / what her friends were doing, but did she listen, did she fuck.

First exam tomorrow. I think I'm more nervous than the DC. How is everyone else doing?

NicolaSturGONE · 24/04/2023 16:37

DDs BF has his first exam tomorrow. He's currently here cause no internet at his house so is studying here. Also apparently SQA website was down earlier and people couldn't access past papers although serves them right to leave it to last minute

Nat5 geography here today. Ds still in bed. Failed his prelim, predicted grade 8. I think we've all just written geography off and hope the others will go better. Not a great start though.

Chompiemompie · 25/04/2023 20:18

Hi all. How are you doing?

Dd had her 1st today - geography.
I don't know whether to be impressed or concerned at her relaxed attitude but any gentle mentions of whether it is good idea to spend so much time perfecting festival makeups at this stage leads to a total meltdown.
She thought it was OK, nothing that tgey haven't covered but also that alot of what she had studied she couldn't remember.

NicolaSturGONE · 25/04/2023 20:38

DDs BF thinks his went okay.

Threeboysadogandacat · 26/04/2023 00:52

Ds doesn’t have his first exam until next week so he’s studying maths today. He’s also walked to the shops to get photos taken for his provisional driving license, cycled to school to get his head of year to sign the back of said photos, come home and filled out the form and walked to Tesco for muffins, Pringles and iced coffee, failing to post the form! I think he’s managing to fit an occasional study session around his busy lifestyle.

On a more positive note, he’s been told that he will get the extra time for all his exams that he should have been given in the prelims. That was an oversight despite him asking. It also means he will likely be in the smaller room with fewer people which is better for him.

thaegumathteth · 26/04/2023 01:20

First exam for ds tomorrow - higher history. He has worked incredibly hard - I'm amazed tbh because it's not like him! he has an exam a week for the next 4 weeks. I just so hope he gets what he deserves because he really has tried. He's in s5 but one of the youngest and my family all live in England and are aghast that he's doing highers already and no matter how many times I explain the system they seem to think these exams aren't 'real exams'. 😡
