So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

We have covid in the house and ds has his next higher next week. Ffs. He's worked so hard.

RollOnJune23 · 27/04/2023 23:13

What happens if he gets covid? Would they let him sit it in a separate room? Don't assume he will get it though, whenever one of us has got it there's always at least one family member who didn't catch it.

I don't know. I've emailed school. Only tested Dd because she had an orthodontist appointment and a snotty nose.

RollOnJune23 · 28/04/2023 00:44

Fingers crossed for you

Is it higher maths on Thursday? That's my ds's first exam

Yes higher maths is his first one

i had Covid a month ago and I think I got it off him (didn’t test him as I assumed it was a cold!) so hopefully we won’t have that worry at least!

My son has not come out of of Advanced Higher Biology particularly happy. He said it was very different to past papers. Needs a B to meet conditions so fingers crossed.

My son said the same about some of the questions in the Higher biology paper - that they were worded differently to past papers and he was unclear what they were after. He said wrote quite a bit for each one in the hope that what he wrote would include the ‘magic word’ the marking scheme needed. But he wasn’t happy with those questions.

History and Maths this week, staying in today to study, at least I hope she studies. She does seem quite relaxed this morning but will likely become very irritable with us all on the day itself.

She is up by 7.40??!!
Mine won't emerge till almost lunchtime. History tomorrow. Oh well gives me time to decide what he should look at and find some questions etc.

Aurea · 01/05/2023 09:31

My DS doesn't get up til 10am but works on and off during the day until around 9pm. He's taking four advanced highers with his first exam being music on Friday.

user143777534 · 01/05/2023 09:52

Higher history tomorrow. DS has been studying like mad, and getting 80-90% in everything he has handed in, but just mentioned in passing last night that one of the questions he has no clue how to answer so hasn’t revised it 🙄

So guess what we will be doing today!

NicolaSturGONE · 01/05/2023 10:54

I've actually got a History degree, but she won't let me anywhere near her past papers or ask me for help. very very frustrating. From what I can see though, it hasn't changed too much since I did my own exams, still doing the wars, still doing source questions etc which were the easiest questions. She's studying Maths this morning, not moved onto History yet. She's still in her jammies because its comfy. I wish she'd actually sleep longer as she goes to bed too late normally and always looks tired.

I’m not allowed to help either - other than by waking them up at the requested time, and making food periodically.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 01/05/2023 11:35

Mine had a meltdown about higher maths last night, it’s all fucked and all his hard work has been for nothing as he can’t understand how lots of the questions are written, he’s clearly catastrophising. I’m sure he’ll do fine and you know what if he doesn’t we will get him a tutor and he’ll try it again next year.

it’s been too long a wait for his first one, no idea why things like maths and English are quite late this year. He’s got too much time to sit fretting instead of just getting in there and getting it fucking done.

RollOnJune23 · 01/05/2023 12:56

I hope he'll feel ok tomorrow. Quite normal to flake out a bit at the end I think!
Mine won't revise except what I actually give to him - go and do this 6 mark question type of thing - but he has particular issues. It's quite hard reading about all these hard working dc; but that's just the way it is.

NicolaSturGONE · 01/05/2023 15:14

DD is also panicking about N5 Maths. Her scientific calculator is 'not working' because the answer is wrong. Told DD to try the sum on Google but google is also 'wrong'. And its definitely the wrong answer, not DD being wrong or typing the sum in wrong, oh no, DD is right, and the universe is wrong.
DD, funnily enough, does not want me to buy her a new 'working' calculator.
DH very calmly talked through the questions with her.
But I'm still not allowed to help with History, which she has now moved onto.
I am allowed, however, to provide drinks, hot water bottle, food and snacks
I'm the parent with the degree by the way....

It is hard isn’t it!

I ended up taking DS into school to see his lovely history teacher, who reassured him that the chances of having to answer just on that particular topic were slim, but also that he did know the topic and just needed to put in a couple of hours to be on the safe side. So he’s tucked away in his room doing that now.

RollOnJune23 · 01/05/2023 19:21

Worrying about practicalities now - what do they do with their ever-present phones during an exam? I know they can't have them on them. Can they bring a bag at all?

NicolaSturGONE · 01/05/2023 19:42

DD was saying they have to leave their bags elsewhere, but I dont know if that's specific to her school, I know I was always allowed to take my bag but that was in the very early years of mobile phones so I didn't have one then! She knows to switch her phone off and I vaguely recall seeing an email to the kids about rules saying as much. Can't remember what else it said.

Rae36 · 01/05/2023 19:44

Our school remind them to turn them off and leave them in their bags at the front of the hall. They are then reminded again once they've sat down so they have a second reminder.
A phone went off in someone's bag in an exam last week but nothing happened. The bags are all in a pile at the front so I don't suppose they would be able to tell whose it was anyway.

RollOnJune23 · 01/05/2023 20:07

Thank you both. I'm sure I remember some story about a boy being disqualified when his phone rang in the exam! (Maybe he answered it Grin)

Shelefttheweb · 01/05/2023 20:13

Not just phones, you are not allowed any watches either.

I haven’t heard about Scotland but in England you are automatically disqualified from that exam, and possibly every other exam by that exam board ,if you are found to have a phone on you in the exam hall. And no it makes no difference if you answer it.

RollOnJune23 · 01/05/2023 20:26

I find it really hard to imagine hundreds of 15 year olds coming in for exams without their phone with them, though you'd hope they'd be turned off and in their bag. They don't have anywhere to leave them, and some use phones for buses/money.
Hmm, might get ds to just give it to me, though I'd have liked him to call me when it's over.

NicolaSturGONE · 01/05/2023 20:29

Will your DS say anything other than "fine" when you ask him how it went? I doubt my DD will say anything more than that!
