sqa exams 2023

So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

Anyone else still with nothing or is DS telling me he signed up but hasn't actually done it properly?

Chchchanges23 · 08/08/2023 08:55

Is a C normally a problem (Nat5) for going on to do a Higher in that subject? I assume ultimately it’s the school’s discretion, but just hoping there isn’t a rule!

2 x As, which I’m delighted about for my hugely struggling child. Don’t want her to be unable to pursue her main interest though ☹️

weebarra · 08/08/2023 08:59

Still nothing here! DS1 says he did it properly but who knows. All his friends have done incredibly well though. I'm so nervous, DS1 has severe dyslexia, ADHD and anxiety. I'll be proud of him whatever, but I just want to know!

Mixed bag here. Mostly as expected, several As, but a C in one subject which he is really good at, all prelims and practice exams scoring in the high 90s and his teacher is always full of praise for him, he thought the exam went well. He is completely gutted about this one.

Well done on the As! I really feel for your DS, that sounds tough. It’s hard for them to remember that none of these grades will matter in just a few years.

My DD has failed one of her Nat4s which she’ll be sad about (when she gets out of bed…). It’s been incredibly tough for lots of them to recover from the last few years.

Igneococcus · 08/08/2023 09:01

I don't think the C is a problem for taking Highers but he is just so disappointed and can't see how it happened. He is not as confident as his sister was (still is) and this really got to him now.

But it's still a pass, so it's really positive news! Is he planning to appeal?

Igneococcus · 08/08/2023 09:13

I know @Chchchanges23 it's just hard for a 15 year old to have that perspective.
Lockdown really did set a whole lot of new and weird challenges. My children reacted to it very differently.

Igneococcus · 08/08/2023 09:16

I think he will want to @MathsNervous I need to have a look into the process and maybe also talk to his teacher.

54isanopendoor · 08/08/2023 09:16

Waiting on post (her choice) for my Dd who sat 3 x N5 (maths, eng, engineering).
She is Autistic, Dyslexic & semi verbal. I'm so nervous. If she gets these she is employable (on paper anyway). She's now asleep (been awake half the night).

My Ds got his HNC results last week. He can now apply to his 1st choice Uni (applications embargoed last week). His 2nd choice advised applying yesterday.
He is asleep - absolutely 100% hit the wall of ASD exhaustion. He can't wake up.

I'm here with coffee, using MN as a vent so I don't get emotional in front of them. Good luck to all your children (and all of you)

MathsNervous · 08/08/2023 09:17

If it was a D I could understand being disappointed. I got BCCCC for Highers but still ended up with a uni place through clearing, gaining a BSc years later. Your DS will achieve his potential whether it's an A/B/C. They are still a great achievement!

Igneococcus · 08/08/2023 09:16

Have a long think about this as the grade can go down, stay the same or up. And once appealed it can't be altered.

A C is still a great achievement, honestly. This is just the start of your DS's learning journey, especially if he plans graduate apprenticeship schemes or traditional uni route.

MathsNervous · 08/08/2023 09:21

Regardless do talk to your DS's teacher about your concerns, they will help you make the right decision 🤞@Igneococcus

Have everything crossed your DD gets the grades she's after 🤞🤞

No Maths resit!! 5 As, 1 B (Chemistry) and a C in Maths (phew!) We’re all delighted 😃 Well done everyone else including all those with offspring who sat Highers and AHs - Aurea and Bluepeach Wow!!

No maths resit is the headline in our house too - happy days!!!!

user143777534 · 08/08/2023 09:50

Higher AAABB here. DS is disappointed as I ne of the Bs is in History and he has always got in the 90+% range for it in every other assessment he has ever taken. He has always wanted to do history at St Andrews. It’s what has motivated him through all the studying for the last few years.

We’ll speak to his teacher and see if it’s worth appealing for a re-mark. He had a panic attack in the break between the 2 papers because the first paper had a question in it that SQA said wouldn’t be set. But unfortunately that didn’t count as exceptional circumstances.

GottoHandit · 08/08/2023 09:53

MathsNervous thanks and glad your DC got a pass in their Computing. My DD was doing great in her last school with Maths but obviously lost her way a bit when she moved school towards the end of S3. But a pass is a pass.

PiffPaffPoff glad we’re sharing the same experience regarding the Maths results! Wasn’t looking forward to her having to navigate 5 Highers AND a Maths resit - takes the pressure off.

And to all those who’ve pulled it off despite the ongoing impacts of Lockdown and having to navigate the exam system with Dyslexia, Anxiety and ADHD - bloody well done. It’s been an unbelievable slog since 2020 to get to today.

KnittingNeedles · 08/08/2023 09:57

DD has come away with A in AdvH Geography, B in AdvH Drama and a B in her crash Higher Modern Studies.

It doesn't really matter as she has an unconditional anyway but is very pleased. Especially as her geography teacher said at parents night that "nobody ever gets A in Advanced Higher Geography".

Waiting on the post here too.

I'm more nervous than my son. But he needs the results as has a conditional place at college.

Long wait until the post has been! Usually around lunchtime here.

Good luck @54isanopendoor got my fingers crossed 🤞

Sorry your ds didnt get what he expected in history, it is a difficult subject. Someone posted a picture above showing "re-marks" as such are not happening but you can request marking is checked. Did the sqa actually say in their course modifications certain questions would not be set this year? My niece was doing history this year and the impression I had was she was worried it was the whole course again with nothing excluded.

Hope his marks let him move onto whatever he wants to do next.

Rainbowshit · 08/08/2023 10:18

Still nothing here. Becoming clear that DS didn't actually complete the process to sign up for texts. 😡

Guess we'll just have to wait on the post.

8misskitty8 · 08/08/2023 10:28

5 B’s at national 5 for DD and a national 4.
She did a NPA college course as well but due to college strikes that hasn’t been uploaded to sqa yet.
Absolutely delighted for her.

Well done to everyone’s DD/DS.

weebarra · 08/08/2023 10:38

Likewise rainbowshit!

TooOldForThisNonsense · 08/08/2023 10:40

Well done everyone and hope everyone still waiting finds out soon!

5 As at higher for my boy - English, Maths, Chemistry, Computing Science and Modern Studies. He’s delighted and I’ve never been more proud 😄

54isanopendoor · 08/08/2023 10:51

She's in tears under a blanket.
She got 2 x B's (English & Engineering)
but a C for Maths (her tutor had promised an A so she feels a failure plus she's doing Higher Maths which might be a stretch considering?)
I'm simply relived she has Maths & English Nat5 (plus Engineering - result!)

RollOnJune23 · 08/08/2023 11:10

I can see why she'd be disappointed - those are good results though!
We've just had the letter through the door. I've been shoo'ed out of the room though.
