So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

Mine is finished now 😅

@Aurea Im not very sure what exactly qualifies as contextual. He might be as we are a low income family (FSM) and he has autism? Hopefully he will get good grades anyway but I can’t see him getting an A for higher English. He’s always struggled with it. It was his only B at Nat 5.

Aurea · 19/05/2023 17:15

@Threeboysadogandacat

There's a handy widening participation checker here. It tells you whether you are eligible for a contextual offer.

Ds1 finished his highers on Friday, ds2 still hanging on for Design and Manufacture a week on Tuesday. He's had the best part of 3 weeks between exams, it's crazy. They're starting to get on my nerves now just hanging around the house until 1st June. I'll need to find them some jobs to do.

NicolaSturGONE · 21/05/2023 09:38

questions for teachers - does the marking start after each exam or after all exams are completed? When is marking generally completed? Also, is it true schools get the marks a few days before the kids? I always wondered why they invited kids in to open their marks on telly or for the papers. Surely they wouldn't invite kids in to then become upset on camera?

Some marking has started already. It'll be going on quite far into June.

KingCatMeowInSpace · 21/05/2023 10:46

Do the kids get an actual percentage or just a grade? Also do they get a band 1/2 or just a grade?

MistressIggi · 21/05/2023 11:07

I've never seen a pupil certificate actually. Schools get bands and also actual marks. We aren't allowed to give those out straight away though.

Survey99 · 21/05/2023 11:09

Certificate shows grade only, not bands.

The SQA coordinator at your school will be given band and component marks for internal use, but ime they generally don't share with parents unless an appeal for a subject is requested.

MistressIggi · 21/05/2023 11:37

We use them as part of our general quality assurance, comparing to our estimates etc.

dementedpixie · 21/05/2023 11:52

My dcs have been able to find out their bands by asking for them. Think they had to go to their guidance teacher to get told them.

They arent on the certificate as its just a grade that's on there.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 21/05/2023 11:54

The school can give them the band and also the percentage if they ask. My son had I think 5 band 1 and 2 band 2

Shelefttheweb · 21/05/2023 12:31

A few universities (Cambridge) make offers based on AH bands not grades

They do, think they treat A1 at AH as an A* at A level and an A2 as an A

My son found N5 Chemistry a breeze - said it was the easiest exam he's sat this year. Don't know if that fills me with confidence...

Physics is his best science but he found the N5 paper weird. Said some of Q's were oddly worded, and the mark allocation was sometimes quite different to previous past papers. Thinks he still got an A, but is less confident about the A1 he was predicted.

One more to go... Computing next Fri. And then we're done!

I've finished marking the Higher folio component, so some marking is defo underway (or even finished!). We get quite a short period of time to finish it. I think I had 10 days to mark 140 scripts.

mummywithtwokidsplusdog · 21/05/2023 14:44

Just thinking back to last year and how glad my DC was that the text came through … if your DC haven’t signed up for SQA text of their results they might want to think about doing so otherwise they have to wait for certificate coming in the post- which was the following day for us.

Hahahaha thank god it isn't me sitting them!

user143777534 · 21/05/2023 18:49

How long do they have to sign up for the text? We forgot last year and had to wait for the post.

Thanks, we were waiting walking round the area trying to spot the postie on the post too

Banshee9 · 21/05/2023 21:44

Thanks for the date @dementedpixie. Some friends of DS forgot to sign up last year which made for a long wait for them.

Do you need to sign up again in S5 if you did get the text in S4? I'm assuming it carries through?

dementedpixie · 21/05/2023 21:51

You dont need to sign up again unless your phone number or email address has changed

Marking is well underway, most of the coursework (submitted in April for Highers, March for Nat 5s) is complete or very nearly so. Marking of question papers from this diet is also in progress. The process starts around a week after the exam is sat, where the most senior markers will finalise the marking scheme - this can't happen until they gauge whether responses to questions are as expected or not. This will then be shared to the general markers 2-3 weeks after the paper has been sat and then the marking will last possibly a couple of weeks after that for a big subject like English with a lot of candidates. This is often at home and online. Smaller subjects may be marked over a few days/a week of in person meetings. They all have to be marked by start of July, more or less, to let the final stages of the process happen (checks on marking, decisions about grade boundaries etc). Schools do get results a day (possibly 2) in advance but these are strictly embargoed to teaching staff until results day.
