So only about 2 months til the final exams so starting a thread to discuss revision, exams etc.

Have any schools released details of easter revision classes yet? I've heard nothing from our school and don't know if they are doing any. If they aren't, I might look at what else is on offer over easter.

I presume universities get the slightly earlier too? There seems to be a few cases where people have reported knowing if they have got on their course before they have known their results?

NicolaSturGONE · 22/05/2023 07:06

Thanks @margotsdevil and yeah good question about the universities knowing in advance too. What about the media, are they given any indication as to whether grades are higher/lower as I'm sure they say something to that effect pretty much first thing on result day. Its a wonder actual grades don't leak.

As far as I know

schools and universities find out a couple of days before but are not allowed to disclose them. I’d imagine anyone who did would be in serious trouble and could lose their job.

SQA issue statements before and on results day and data on their website .

Computing tomorrow is the last one for DS. Will be so relieved to have them finally over!

user143777534 · 24/05/2023 22:27

Same here. It will be such a relief! Good luck for those who are still going.

dementedpixie · 24/05/2023 22:27

Ds is working out where to fit in his lunch as the exam is during his usual lunchtime! He'll just need to have a big breakfast and a really late lunch.

Last one for him too

Yeah I was thinking this too. The rest have been 1pm starts which has meant a really early 11.30 lunch.

12.30 is trickier.

Going to have to give him brunch at 11 and maybe McDonald's after!

Survey99 · 25/05/2023 05:24

Does the school organise anything? When ds had exams staring just before lunch he would, through choice as we could usually give him a lift to arrive on time for exam, go into school on the usual morning school bus to hang about with friends study before the exam and the school did an early "brain" lunch for them.

MathsNervous · 25/05/2023 07:03

DS will just eat an early lunch before today's exam. Was a bit surprised at the start time but these things happen.

Good luck. Last one for us here too. Thank goodness! My nerves are completely shattered 😭

TooOldForThisNonsense · 25/05/2023 07:08

higher computing here today last exam thank goodness. Yes the time is a bit odd but he’s a teenager I’m sure he’ll prioritise food at some point!

good luck everyone still standing!

spiderplantparty · 25/05/2023 07:33

Still got one more exam to go next week. I think DC would prefer that it was today so it could all be finished.

Igneococcus · 25/05/2023 08:08

Nat5 computing for ds today in the afternoon and that's it. He is as pretty relaxed about the computing exam but looking forward to the exams being over and done with.

Shelefttheweb · 25/05/2023 10:04

DC last exam too. Last night he was looking absolutely fed up with computing. A few months ago he had been wondering about doing it for higher and possibly uni but now very pleased to be dropping it. Apparently the course work put him off as boring and time consuming.

Threeboysadogandacat · 25/05/2023 13:19

Higher computer science is ds3’s last exam too. There’s only three of them sitting it. He’s taking it at advanced higher too and it’s what he plans to do at university so I’m hoping it goes well. I’m not sure if he’s back at school next week or another week off but he’s got his timetable for 6th year. Good luck to them all today.

NicolaSturGONE · 25/05/2023 14:55

Art tomorrow for DD then D&M next week. She is grumpy as fuck today.

Hope everyone got on well. DS said it was "good" which is his standard answer. Just so relieved they are over!

Igneococcus · 25/05/2023 18:02

ds says it went very well. He was in his pyjamas playing computer games when I came home from work.

FuckingHateRats · 25/05/2023 19:05

Last one for us too. He said it was really easy, and he left early 😬😬😬 I always freak out when students say that, and now I'm panicking he's missed a section or not done enough. He's predicted a band 1 A, so I have to trust that he knows the deal. But eesh. Delighted they're over!

NicolaSturGONE · 25/05/2023 19:17

Need to sell DD's study guides, how to pass books etc, which I doubt she's touched so are pretty much brand new. Where do I sell them? I'd rather not give them away for free as they cost a lot. Bit cross DD hasn't really used them.

DD's English dept are telling them they need to start picking a topic for Higher English now. DD says its too early. I don't really understand it all to be honest, what topic, what are they to do? Any English teachers who know?

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 26/05/2023 07:14

Do they mean a topic for their English portfolio piece? Is it still one or do they do more again?

NicolaSturGONE · 26/05/2023 07:16

I think its still one. I think they are bringing back spoken language though.

11 April 2023
We are keeping the following modification to assessment in the Higher English course from session 2023-24 onwards:

  • Portfolio - Learners will be required to produce one piece of writing that is either broadly creative or broadly discursive. We will continue to double learners’ marks out of 15, so that the portfolio continues to make up 30% of the course assessment.
We have received feedback from schools and colleges that reducing the portfolio to one piece of writing, instead of two, has worked well and has had a positive impact on the course. We have also seen that learners’ performance in the portfolio has remained consistent. Providing the option to produce either a broadly creative or broadly discursive piece of writing for course assessment should encourage the exploration of different types of writing and allow for personalisation and choice. We will update the Higher English course specification by the end of May to reflect this change. We will also update the coursework assessment task by the end of August. We are reinstating the performance-spoken language assessment for session 2023-24 onwards.
