Moving on up... Uni/CollegeS5/S6/S4/Work

Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

Wax my girls take on what their "home" is - until they are paying the rent or a mortgage the Lidlfam home is "home" and a room should be kept for their use no notice required! Win win for them - no fresh tidy guest room for me Confused.

Hope all goes well it's such a complex emotional event.

emummy · 31/08/2019 08:09

Good luck today Wax! Dry in Aberdeenshire at the moment, hope it doesn't get too wet. Best of luck to your boy, hope he has a great time at uni.

Alittewornout · 31/08/2019 09:25

Safe travel family Wax. Let us know how he gets on today. We are all here ready with hankies and hugs for you if you feel a bit emotional. X

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2019 10:04

Thanks all, pishin doon! Not too far from Perth. Eta 12.30 says satnav.

howabout · 31/08/2019 10:58

All the best wax and your awesome DS2. One of DD1's squad is off to Robert Gordon next weekend with his guitars. So maybe Aberdeen is about to have its Manchester moment. Smile Watching your progress as this will be me next weekend heading to St Andrews.

No prospect of a spare room here but DD3 is busy planning for the day she is an "only" child with her "own" room. I had thought DD2 would be going away next year but social life might keep her on home turf a while longer - she's already working out the strategy for a 2nd year Glasgow flat share though.

Superjaggy · 31/08/2019 14:11

Hope all goes smoothly for you all Wax. Might see you in Lidl later Grin. We're en route to Aberdeen now, it's fairing up and hopefully we'll avoid most of the football traffic (DS' new flat is next to Pittodrie and Aberdeen are at home, why none of us checked this before today is beyond me....)

DS was a bit emotional as we left the house as we're moving in October and he probably won't stay in his old room again. And we have loved living in that house. He'll be fine once he's out on the town tonight I'm sure.

prettybird · 31/08/2019 18:14

Hope all has gone well Wax and that ds2 is now settling in and his flatmates appear ok.

Ds had his 1st driving lesson with a new instructor in Aberdeen today. Says it went ok once he got used to being in a different car and that the instructor seemed a nice guy.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2019 18:54

Thanks ladies. All well. Got here about 12.15. Wasn't too bad, DH had to stay with the car for a while as double parked but managed to get a space somewhere after we'd unloaded. Met 3 of his flatmates, 2 guys and a girl so thinking number 5 might be another girl.went to lidl , it's a bit shit compared to what we are used to, but he got some basics, it's probably better if you can cook rather than looking for tins etc. :) He wanted to go with us for dinner so walked to the pub at which point he declared that he wanted to be back for half 5 for something. Dinner arrived, he quickly ate it and shot off, saying he'll text in the morning if he wants to see us before we head back. So, didn't get a hug or proper goodbye. Maybe better that way. Nose to tail traffic into town but now chilling in the hotel.

Drove past pittodrie on way to hotel super, it was really busy so hope you got sorted okay. Weather definitely improved after we got here.

Glad to hear the lesson went well traffic was pretty bad so hopefully he wasn't stuck in it too much.

prettybird · 31/08/2019 19:01

Glad to hear he's in and sort of settled. Have you arranged to see him tomorrow or are you playing it by ear?

Superjaggy · 31/08/2019 19:04

Maybe the easiest way to say goodbye Wax! Hope your hotel is nice.

No mean feat learning to drive in Aberdeen, pb! Good that your DS has found a decent instructor :).

We got parked ok in Pittodrie St and went to Morrison's on King St which was heaving with parents and students! Having a bar meal before we head home.

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2019 19:09

Playing it by ear pb.

Passed Morrisons, well we were stopped outside it for a while took us over half an hour from hillhead to town. It looked busy. Our bar meal wasn't great but it was food, hope yours is better :) Only in a budget hotel but it's nice enough and clean. DHs shoulder has held up so that's good. Might head down in search of a drink or snack soon.

prettybird · 31/08/2019 19:29

He got a recommendation from one of his old rugby teammates for a decent driving instructor Smile

We'll wait and see whether he takes his test up there or books it for when he's back down here. Lessons are much cheaper in Glasgow Wink but there again, we're not paying Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2019 20:11

Being nosy pb, how much are they? We were £30 an hour.

prettybird · 31/08/2019 21:07

His lessons in Aberdeen are £28/hour (usually £30 but he gets a student discount). Down here it was £25/hour or £120 per block of 5 or £230 for a block of 10.

Groovee · 31/08/2019 22:39

Dd was the same last year, she wanted rid of us. My niece went back to Aberdeen today. Her flat looks lovely x

Saw quite a few cars on the way stuffed with bags and boxes and young adult passengers. Busy move in weekend.

FluffytheGoldfish · 01/09/2019 17:00

I was watching students arriving at the Glasgow university residences yesterday (looked like international students) and was thinking of the people on here. I hope all your young people have an amazing time.
Dd2 is now very happy in S6. She was a bit unsettled at first as the school are not running AH Physics and she was worried about getting a place elsewhere (maths and chemistry are running in school). All sorted now and she has a place at the Advanced Higher Hub at Glasgow Caledonian.
Dd1 was supposed to be going back to uni next week but has finally admitted how unhappy she was with her choice of course and has decided to get a job instead of going back. Her plan is to earn some money while she decides what she really wants. I would guess a move away from science and to something more creative which will suit her much better.

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/09/2019 17:38

Good for them fluffy. It takes bravery to decide that you've made the wrong choice and to try something else. i hope she finds what she is looking for.

In other news, DS1 and I looked in DS2s room and despite all the stuff he has taken, the room still appears to be full? That's a job for another day I think.

user1487194234 · 01/09/2019 21:28

Totally agree,it takes a lot of guts to say ' no that's not for me ' Good luck to her

susiewong · 02/09/2019 17:35

@WaxOnFeckOff glad your drop off went ok. How are you today ? I’m dreading this time next week after we’ve dropped DS off on Saturday.
@howabout St. Andrews for us at the weekend too. Are you staying for any parents meetings on the Sunday ? Not sure what they’ll be about but sort of feel if there is one then we should go !!

howabout · 02/09/2019 21:39

Not staying for parents meetings susiewong as have to get back home. DD is busy getting herself all packed and ready so starting to dawn on me she is leaving home. She is properly excited though and ready so that is lovely to see.

Groovee · 03/09/2019 06:52

Dd is in stress mode. She's driving me mad!

Anyone got DCs moving into Edinburgh uni over weekend (or another Scottish uni)? We're 650 miles south, so treating the trip as a mini break and starting off on Thursday. She was disappointed not to get into St Andrews, but seems well up for Edinburgh now and has been in touch with her room mate and others on the course who are making plans to get together.

emummy · 03/09/2019 19:06

I went Edinburgh, had a great time! Good luck , hope the trip goes well and she settles in.

Groovee · 03/09/2019 19:24

I'm in Edinburgh but Dd goes to Dundee as Edinburgh stopped doing the 4 year teacher course
