Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

@Apolloanddaphne I'm ready for Dd to return to Dundee! 😂🤣 She's getting right up my nose today.

Meanwhile Ds has booked a holiday to Magaluf for next June 🙈

@Groovee. I will wave to your DD. I don't live very far away from Dundee. In fact I am in Dundee right now.

FluffytheGoldfish · 06/09/2019 16:03

Good luck everyone with the moving this weekend. I'm kind of sad Dd1 isn't going back but happy to keep her too, especially as she has a nasty cough just now.
Dd2 was at the UCAS conference this week and had a good chat with the universities offering Physics. Glasgow is her clear favourite which means she would stay at home (it takes about the same time to get there as it does to get to her school). Just needs to get her personal statement finished now.

Aurea · 06/09/2019 16:26

Good luck all! Mums and DCs.

Will be thinking of you over the next few days. We still have a month to go....

howabout · 06/09/2019 16:58

hotginger those are my thoughts exactly. In their defence they have a very generous bursary policy for anyone entitled to anything other than basic student loan. I can only assume this is what pays the first instalment for students without parents to front them the cash.

Rather than have DD pay us back from her student loan she is keeping a tally of things she is paying for which we would have. Also means we didn't go shopping for her moving out but are leaving her to see what she needs when she gets there.

Groovee DD1 is also driving me demented - I also need my house back as I am used to waving her out the door to school every day. How are you going to put up with your DS for another month Aurea?

ifonly4 · 06/09/2019 17:18

Hot DD going to Edinburgh, she chose to pay eight equal instalments commencing 1 Oct as she'll have had maintenance loan by then. This is set up, but they're still saying she's got to pay next week.

We're in Edinburgh now. DD reckons lots are already here and staying in city. She was tempted to meet them tonight, but has decided to leave it, plenty of time next week.

Groovee · 06/09/2019 17:20

@Apolloanddaphne she's in the direction of Lidl from tomorrow.

@howabout it's her selfishness and forgetting I am not a hotel!

Wax - it is possible to arrange to pay the Aberdeen accommodation monthly via Direct Debit at no extra charge. But iirc, it has to be done in person. Or alternatively and more likely Wink ds didn't get round to doing it in time beforehand - but sorting it out in the first week by going to the finance office was fine Smile

....there was the one month (October?) when instead of taking out the monthly accommodation charge, the Uni paid the equivalent amount in to their accounts! Shock

To be fair, they informed those affected within a day and within 2 days had taken a DD for the double amount Grin

WaxOnFeckOff · 07/09/2019 00:14

Hi pb yes, I saw that but it seemed unnecessarily complicated to do on-line and as you say, it seemed easier to do in person, but I'm happy just to do the 3 installments. I'd toyed just with paying the entire lot upfront and then I wouldn't need to think about it again, but again, it just seemed easier to pay the three installments as the invoices on the account are set up that way. Hope your DS is looking forward to getting back to classes. Ds1 is looking forward to it I think. he's been sat on his bottom since the end of March!

susiewong · 07/09/2019 08:38

... and dads too !
Good luck to those moving today WineGin

Alittewornout · 07/09/2019 09:15

Good luck to everyone moving today! It’s so exciting for them if a little sad for mum and dad. Hugs to all.

wigglybeezer · 07/09/2019 16:09

@ifonly4 , I got mixed up about who was going where and thought you were heading for St Andrews too, hope the weather was as nice in Edinburgh, I think it looks best at this time of year probably because I was a student there and get nostalgic! Brilliant student city.

DS2 dropped off without much ceremony, didn't even take him for lunch because the parking meter was running out, he had to make do with a sausage roll from Greggs but it is his second year so no need for emotional scenes!

Groovee · 07/09/2019 20:45

Dd was still drunk when she finally got out of bed🙈🤦🏻‍♀️.

But we got there. Her room is small but it's got a lovely kitchen and lounge area. One of her flat mates is Groovee too 😂. They even have a dishwasher. Tesco was full of freshers. Though eh was never going to stop laughing after hearing a mum say " do you want sausages?" The reply "why? I wouldn't know how to cook them!" 😂

Hope everyone else got on ok.

Quite a few of Dd's friends moved out today, to Glasgow Unis which isn't far for them, and Dd is pleased to have some more old school friends in town.
We spent the day together, we went to the SECC Discover Dogs Show for her birthday day out.
I hope everyone's moving days went well x

ifonly4 · 10/09/2019 10:55

wigglybeezer St Andrews was DD's firm. Hope your DS is settling in. Despite checking and being told it was no problem taking a motorhome onto site, security was happy and we were given a limited time for drop off. Had to go back later to collect spare suitcases, bags etc to find another motorhome and small lorry had been allowed to park, so it was quite a tiring day.

DD has settled in well, seems really happy. She's only interested in three freshers things, but has had a couple of things come up to do with others. Unfortunately, she thinks she's got freshers flu, cold and was sick last night!

wigglybeezer · 12/09/2019 11:19

DS2 had got himself a wee job in his hall kitchens, think he may have taken overheard chats about family finances being a bit tight to heart, hope he can juggle everyone OK. It'll help him get summer jobs next year so probably a good thing.
In other news DS3 has managed a decent mark in a maths assessment at last, which may mean he's allowed to sit Nat5, I'm a bit ambivalent about this as I think it's a stretch goal, I'd rather he did it next year but he wants it over and done with.

IHaveBrilloHair · 12/09/2019 15:09

Oh god the dreaded Nat5 maths, I swear I'm still not over the nightmare that was!
Good to hear he's got a job.
Dd went out last night to see a friend play a set at some place or other, but, her BF actually went too, him of the refusing to socialise, so things are looking up.

Groovee · 13/09/2019 13:33

Ds is doing ok. He's looking at doing a college course next year.

Dd is poorly. Got herself to the dr in Dundee then got a train home. She's sound asleep. Think she's on the road to a chest infection.

emummy · 13/09/2019 15:22

Oh no Groovee your poor Dd. Hope she is better soon.
ifonly4 I hope your Dd is feeling better now.

prettybird · 13/09/2019 23:31

I'm sure you'll be giving your dd lots of TLC Groovee Smile

Ds is overjoyed to have got through his Carphone Warehouse interview (retail, not call centre) and that they asked when he was available (Wednesdays and Sundays - leaves Saturdays free for rugby).

He's not keen on hospitality (had had a trial shift with Chiquita) and would prefer retail. I'd have though the other way round was better - but what do I know? Wink

WaxOnFeckOff · 13/09/2019 23:54

Hope all the patients are better soon and everyone is getting properly settled in. Well done on the job pb DS.

DS1 starts back on Monday, DH still off and unable to drive - he's going to miss his chauffeur for all his medical appointments. Plus we really need a trip to Costco but I wont drive there and DS only insured in the small car, I might actually have to buy supermarket toilet rolls! Shock

wigglybeezer · 14/09/2019 12:55

It does seem to be the season for bugs, I'm sure their immune systems will get up to speed soon, at least i hope so.
i picked up some Sudafed for DS2 who has had a cold for about 3 weeks now and dropped it off along with some stuff he hadn't bargained on needing when he packed his bags all by himself last week, @WaxOnFeckOff how the "hands off" parents on the "uni backpack" thread would disapprove! I don't care what others think, I've got three boys and sometimes I treat them and fuss a bit, sometimes I don't, I respond to their needs which change all the time, sometimes they get on with things by themselves happily sometimes a bit of help makes them feel supported.
Shoulder injuries are very disabling and painful I hope Mr.Wax heals soon. Aldi have 24 roll packs of TP in at the moment!

IHaveBrilloHair · 14/09/2019 12:58

Farmfoods have big packs of good loo roll too.
Nicky brand.

Groovee · 16/09/2019 14:59

Dd stubbornly went back to Dundee. I've just been up to collect her as she's been given anti sickness drugs in her bum. Will keep her at home with lots of home made soup to take her antibiotics. It's a chest infection 😢

wigglybeezer · 16/09/2019 15:53

Oh dear, definitely better at home then , for your sake and hers.
