Moving on up... Uni/CollegeS5/S6/S4/Work

Hey everyone

It's that time of year... school returns within the next week or 2, others will be preparing to start college or uni. Some will be moving out. Some will start work... so here's the thread for those in that position.

For me Dd is going into second year at Dundee Uni. She did a fantastic first year. She's off to be a mentor to those starting uni this year. Ds has just gone into S6 and has the world to consider in the next year.

Me... I need to find a job after losing my job in June! Done in quite a callous way that I am taking my time to be kind!

First day back here today (well, DS had and hour and a half last Wed to sort his schedule/meet his tutor,, but today is properly back). DS failed his driving theory test last week and has another attempt next Wed so his main focus is on the Highway Code just now (or at least it had better be!)

WaxOnFeckOff · 26/08/2019 08:28

Wicked, is he actually using the highway code as study material? I wouldn't recommend that, better just to find the question bank on Google and keep practicing the questions. There is also a formula you can learn for the stopping distances. Good luck for next week!

prettybird · 26/08/2019 08:51

Ds passed his theory test by doing loads and loads of practice tests. He says he did read the Highway Code as well and looked at all the signs (which on the Highway Code online is a separate link to get to the full set). He was particularly proud of knowing all five types of crossings, including a Pegasus Crossing Confused. I believe that that did come up in his theory test! Shock

Started off by getting 23/50 on his 1st practice on-line test and by the time he took it officially got 47/50 (pass mark 43). He also got a couple but not too many Wink wrong on the hazard perception test - that was the bit he's been more worried about because he said if you "saw" a hazard too soon, or there were multiple hazards and you clicked on the "wrong" one, that would be recorded as wrong Confused

WickedGoodDoge · 26/08/2019 12:31

Wax he has some app that he says has the same questions as the actual exam- who knows what he’s actually doing though. I’ll have him look up the formula for stopping distances! Pretty he said the same about the hazard perception- he did pass that bit, but he lost points where he clicked too early. He has his first driving lesson since failing this evening so he’s going to ask for tips on the hazard perception- I suspect his passing that the first time was more a fluke than skill!

prettybird · 26/08/2019 12:52

Maybe he should try some more apps/websites to get different angles on what might be asked.

I think ds was helped by all the road cycling he has done which has helped his general awareness - but he said that was a two edged sword on the hazard perception test because he's used to looking ahead. It does seem a bit Hmm that if you notice a hazard "too early", that's wrong Confused Being aware of a hazard from a long way back is surely a good thing - that's what my driving instructor taught me Confused (all those gazillion years ago Blush).

Good luck to your ds next Wednesday Smile

Ds is currently waiting to hear back from a driving instructor that one of his rugby friends up in Aberdeen recommended about his availability so that he can continue his lessons and not lose the momentum of where he'd got to down here. Lessons are much more expensive up in Aberdeen though Sad (Just as well it's my dad paying though Wink).

Ds has settled back into S6 fine.

Dd is sunning herself in Magaluf with her bestie/cousin. They are having a ball and got lucky with the hotel.

My niece is back to Aberdeen this weekend and Dd is next weekend.

Dd did her UCAT today & got a good mark so she's very relieved. So pleased it's out of the way.

Alittewornout · 28/08/2019 18:37

That is fab news! I think your lovely Dd just needs to believe in herself a bit more, she is clearly a very able young lady who will make an amazing doctor in the future. Well done to her!x

emummy · 28/08/2019 19:30

Thanks Alittle! You don't work at the test centre do you - that's just what the lovely woman on the desk said to her! I hope she will get a boost from today.

Alittewornout · 28/08/2019 19:45

That’s funny! But no I don’t work there just have Dd that needs to do the same.😉

prettybird · 28/08/2019 22:08

That's good news emummy Smile

Flowers to your dd (and WineGinCakeBrew as required for you!)

Aurea · 29/08/2019 15:58

Great news emummy!! 😊

Superjaggy · 30/08/2019 17:14

Great news emummy! Well done your DD Smile

IHaveBrilloHair · 30/08/2019 17:40

That's great emummy Star

emummy · 30/08/2019 21:31

Thank you everyone! Back to normal school stuff now

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 21:34

great stuff emummy :)

We are just getting the last of DS2s stuff pulled together for the exodus to Aberdeen in the morning. We had a nice meal out and I've handed him the last of the lists and left him to it. Bound to have forgotten stuff but hopefully nothing than can't be picked up in Aberdeen. Just the food shop to do now.

Alittewornout · 30/08/2019 21:44

Good luck to your Ds Wax! Exciting times ahead for him! Remember to buy some hankies and wine for yourself tomorrow evening.😉

prettybird · 30/08/2019 21:53

Food shop to be done in the local Lidl, so he can learn his way around it Grin

Good luck for tomorrow Smile. Try not to throttle him Wink - and keep smiling if only at the other parents who are similarly trying not to throttle their offspring Grin You love him really Wink

It seems like only yesterday that we were talking about the possibility of Aberdeen and PIR and thinking it was beyond reach - and yet here he is. Kudos to him Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 22:20

thanks evryone. and yes, he is aware of what a lucky boy he is. he is in a great mood tonight and has been working hard. Nothing in the car yet but that will be DHs job to direct operations tomorrow. Boys will be doing the heavy lifting. No amp going as one works for his guitar and the other for his Bass so thinking he might treat himself to something better that will hopefully cope with both. I know nothing about these things. I've said Santa can bring it. :)

Only issue with food shop is that will mean queuing to get back in again. Dh thought we could maybe do an early trip before we go but I don't think there will be room in the car.

prettybird · 30/08/2019 22:46

You could get everything unpacked into the flat and then the last thing that you do before going back to the hotel is go to Lidl. Then you just need to go back into Hillhead to drop ds2 off with his shopping, while you double park, and then go off to the hotel.

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 22:56

Good thinking batman. :) Then we just need to figure out what we are doing for dinner as I guess that will depend on whether he wants to come or not. I suppose he could try out the bus to save us going back up for him :)

prettybird · 30/08/2019 23:06

They're also apparently ok on Move-In weekend about cars parking everywhere, including on the grass.

Good luck!

WaxOnFeckOff · 30/08/2019 23:24

Given the torrential rain forecast I'm thinking the grass might not be a good idea. The plan is to leave at 9 (which means at least 9.30) so should get in the vicinity around noon - then see how long it is to get actually in. Helpfully there is a home game on at the football stadium nearby. 3pm kick off to Ross County so could be worse.

prettybird · 30/08/2019 23:50

It was only 2.5 hours from Glasgow (South side, but close to the M77), so you may get there sooner. The new Aberdeen bypass makes a difference. Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 31/08/2019 00:07

We didn't try the bypass last time. We should be under 2 and a half hours (DH drives for a living so getting speeding points is not an option!) but we think might be longer just due to the forecast. was just sitting thinking about the day we brought him home from the hospital and whilst he will be back for holidays and some weekends and maybe even back to live for a while after he graduates, the reality is that this will no longer be his main home anymore. Unless of course he decides he doesn't like it and he's back home again by Christmas! :o
