So the 6th of August is fast approaching... here is the 2019 thread.

Ds was sitting a mixture of highers and Nat5's. So we'll see what this year brings.

I'm just grateful it's not 2 lots like last year as it was a mare.

DD slept in and I was so tempted to wake her but knew she'd be grumpy all day if I did.

Nat5 results were B in Art and Design; C in Computing, English and Maths; and a D in Graph Comm.

She's doing all of them as Highers for 5th year so I take it she doesn't have to redo any as a Nat5 with those results? They're much better than her prelim results were so I'm proud of her for putting the work in.

I don't fully understand the system compared to what we had but it does seem to be more fluid between levels from what I've seen.

sassanach · 06/08/2019 09:32

it seems SQA are having some problems with the text alerts this morning.

Lidlfix · 06/08/2019 09:37

Badger depends on school. Where I teach she'd need to upgrade the D at Nat 5 to progress to Higher. Maths would encourage an upgrade or 2 year Higher. Other Cs we would let her start Higher and make final decisions post prelims. Other schools near me would be stricter as C pass at Nat 5 is a big jump to Higher. Call the school they'll probably have a designated depute taking queries at some point.

Groovee · 06/08/2019 09:40

Well done everyone. Ds has managed an A in Nat5 maths. The tutor was amazing. None of the credit can go to the teacher.

Homes disappointed in his other results as they don't match the prelims again. Hey ho he'll get over it x

Thanks Lidlfix. I don't know if the school are doing anything so I'll try to find out. She's told me there's a 4th year crashing the Higher in Computing so sounds like they might be fairly flexible but just depends what that kid was doing in 3rd year too. I didn't know if they still did crash Highers or not, did a couple myself. At least if it comes to it she can redo the Nat5 alongside the Highers though, and she's one of the youngest in her year too so I wouldn't be against her repeating 6th year (or going to college for a year before uni) if she didn't get the Higher results that she wanted.

OtraCosaMariposa · 06/08/2019 09:44

Still no text. DS has the confirmation text from the SQA saying he'd signed up so no idea what's happened there.

Looks like we're waiting for the postman.

Willyoubuymeahouseofgold · 06/08/2019 09:52

Waiting ....

Sparkygal · 06/08/2019 09:53

My ds was resitting his Nat 5's this year as got D's for all except English last year. So he was doing resits and Higher English this year.

This year he got a B for art and design and D's for his higher and resits.

He is gutted (as am I). I am not sure if he doesn't exam well or if he simply hasn't put in the work. He seems to have been working but only he knows.

So he only has 2 nat5s at the end of s5. Really unsure as to what steps are next as he doesn't want to resit for a 3rd year ....

Honestly I could cry Sad, so I can only imagine how he's feeling. He's being quiet about it and going to email his guidance teacher later on today.

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/08/2019 09:54

Postie been.....

He's only gone and bleeding done it.... Away to check ucas, but they asked for two Bs in his highers and he got AB so presumably his place is confirmed . Slightly disappointed in a C for his AH, but happy overall.

Thanks all for the support, congrats to those who've done what they needed and best wishes to all those still waiting.

OOAOML · 06/08/2019 09:56

That's rough @Sparkygal - hopefully the school can help.

prettybird · 06/08/2019 09:58

So he's off to Aberdeen! Brilliant! Smile

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/08/2019 10:02

Oh no sparkly, I can imagine what he's feeling. What kind of thing does he want to do post school? Hopefully some of the careers people and teachers here will be able to offer some help.

Pb, presumably, still waiting on him to log onto ucas...

emummy · 06/08/2019 10:02

Straight As! Can't believe it. So pleased for Dd, she has worked so hard and gets so stressed. Now for UCAT...

Groovee · 06/08/2019 10:04

Fab news @WaxOnFeckOff will miss you holding my hand next year as you've been here as long as I have.

@Sparkygal I'd recommend talking to Skills Development Scotland. I'm thinking Ds will need to do the apprentice route now so been on their website this morning.

Lidlfix · 06/08/2019 10:05

Awh Wax congratulations to your DS. Have followed his journey through your posts this year and he has made phenomenal progress . Now let the uni prep begin!

sassanach · 06/08/2019 10:07

Hi @Sparkygal you can DM me or @weebarra if you like as we are careers advisers, or phone the exam helpline?

There are lots of options still available to him. He could consider college, or maybe an apprenticeship that would give him both qualifications and employment?

WaxOnFeckOff · 06/08/2019 10:10

Thanks all, he is a different boy from 2 years ago for sure. I'm so excited for him.

Groovee, I'm sure I'll not be able to resist lurking on the thread for another couple of years to see how this year's Nat 5 and the rest of those on their journey progress.

We might need a new post school thread for those off to work, college and uni as I feel personally invested now.

sassanach · 06/08/2019 10:10

www.apprenticeships.scot is the website to look at @Groovee

Trick is to search by postcode and radius rather than keyword - brings up more results.

Groovee · 06/08/2019 10:16

Thank you @sassanach x

@WaxOnFeckOff on it x

Whitelisbon · 06/08/2019 10:18

Dd has been in floods of tears this morning - 2 As, 2 Bs, and a D, all for higher. She's gutted over the D, it's for English, which is normally her strongest subject, and the one she was seriously considering for uni.
It means she can no longer do her advanced higher English either, which she's worked really hard on over the holidays.
Makes it harder that she's away at camp, so I can't even give her a hug.
Not sure what'll happen, she got A for her English prelim, so I'm assuming the school will appeal.

wigglybeezer · 06/08/2019 10:24

Sparkygal, handhold from me as my DS1 had exactly the same outcome in S4, he never made it to the end of S5 though, he'd lost all confidence in himself. Can't really give you a happy ever after story as he still has not come up with a " sensible" life plan but there have been some high points, he sat Nat5 Applications of Maths as a distance candidate at college last year and got an A so at least he now has Maths and English. He is currently pursuing a career as a pro- gamer, which raises a few eyebrows, but made it to the World Championships in his discipline and actually won a few thousand Euros. Being good at something and applying himself has been good for him.
There are a lot of good options at College, I found lots ( that I couldn't persuade DS to try!).
I'm enjoying a rare year off SQA stress, although DS1 has a driving test tomorrow..
See you all again next year, the cameraderie on here is the best bit about exam season!

emummy · 06/08/2019 10:30

So sorry to hear that WhiteLisbon, your poor Dd. I hope the school can sort something out for her.

meikyo · 06/08/2019 10:36

Still waiting here - didn't sign up for text/email - postie normally arrives late morning. DD sat 5 highers.
