My 2 have 5 prelims between them from Wed-Fri with a couple more next week for good measure. At least it gets them over with.

eatinglesschocolate · 09/01/2019 15:53

Aurea Amazing Oxford offer for your son. So what’s his pecking order then? What a lovely position for him to be in!

prettybird · 09/01/2019 15:57

Brilliant news Aurea - your ds (and you) must be so pleased. His hard work is paying off. Smile

susiewong · 09/01/2019 16:49

Congrats to you & your DS @aurea ! Fabulous news.
My DS was offered an interview but decided Oxford wasn’t for him so he declined it 😳
Just waiting to hear from St Andrews before making his decision.

Aurea · 09/01/2019 18:08

Thanks everyone for your good wishes.

Assuming all goes to plan, he will put Oxford as firm (AAB AH conditions) and Edinburgh (unconditional) as his insurance.

HotGingerPudding · 09/01/2019 18:15

Absolutely fantastic Aurea You must both be thrilled. Would that be your son's first choice?

susiewong has your son heard back from everyone apart from St Andrew's? Would that be his first choice do you think?

My daughter is now regretting not getting her application off sooner (it finally went off in the last week of term) as she has yet to hear from any of her five choices - Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and St Andrew's.

HotGingerPudding · 09/01/2019 18:17

Ah, cross posted as I took so long!

Sounds like a plan. Great to have Edinburgh as his back up. You must be very proud of him 😄

Alittewornout · 09/01/2019 18:27

Huge congratulations to your son Aurea you must be bursting with pride! Re St Andrews don’t worry or hold your breath it is usually mid to late Feb before offers for Scottish applicants are given out.
My DD starts higher prelims next week. She has been working really hard fingers crossed they go well!🙈🙈

eatinglesschocolate · 09/01/2019 18:39

Aurea Loving that he has Edi as his unconditional insurance!😂😇🎉 That boy has done so well!! He went for Oxford, believed in himself and it’s all paid off.

susiewong · 09/01/2019 18:54

@HotGingerPudding yes he heard back from Glasgow & Edinburgh really quickly - mid October. Then from Strathclyde a few weeks later. All unconditionals.
He’s between Glasgow & St. Andrews but that’s more to do with staying at home or not (!) as he likes both courses. Premlind start tomorrow for him ...

@aurea - congratulations - you must be so proud and relieved. What a great position to be in for your ds.

ComeOnGordon · 16/01/2019 12:00

Was sent over here by a lovely poster as my dc1 is considering studying in Scotland. We’re in Central Europe just now but I’ve still got friends and family in Scotland so she’s quite keen on studying there.

She applied to Glasgow, Strathclyde and Edinburgh to do politics and economics and got a conditional offer for Glasgow today Grin. What they’re asking for might be a stretch for her tho but she didn’t seem too stressed (yet).

Also got a rejection from Strathclyde but not heard yet from Edinburgh

ClerkMaxwell · 16/01/2019 12:39

Good luck to your DD. My DS2 is at Glasgow and I studied there. My youngest is thinking of a very similar degree to your DDn ext year so I'll be interested in your posts.

Entry criteria is high for Scottish/EU students at Glasgow because of the limited number of places and high demand. Has she looked at Aberdeen or Heriot Watt (not sure the latter does politics) - they tend to have lower offers and in my opinion just as good.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/01/2019 13:14

HW doesn't do anything in the Politics line but Aberdeen and Dundee and Stirling do, worth having a look on clearing or looking to see if you can add those on? I know there is some facility to apply for other things at some point but can't remember what it's called or how it works. I think Glasgow college do a HND that leads into the Strathclyde course and Aberdeen Uni also do a similar scheme with a few colleges. We'd put that up our sleeve as a reserve position for DS2.

Groovee · 16/01/2019 13:16

My Dd is doing teaching at Dundee and last semester did a politics elective. She loved it and found it to be quite a good challenge. It means that should her course not work out they can transfer to another course.

Dundee was never a consideration until she was given an interview but she loves it x

ComeOnGordon · 16/01/2019 18:26

Thanks for that info - she didn’t want to go to Aberdeen as she felt it was too isolated and far away but will mention Dundee and Stirling to her.
She’s still got the option of applying to Unis here and she doesn’t have to do that until she gets her exams results at the end of May so there’s lots of options open even if she doesn’t get the grades for Glasgow.

WaxOnFeckOff · 16/01/2019 19:31

I had to talk DS into popping into the Stirling Uni open day but he went and then sheepishly told me that he loved the course after previously dismissing Stirling at it's our local. The talk was great and he was inspired enough to apply there and whilst Aberdeen was his first choice, it will be interesting to see what he does if he also gets an offer from Stirling.

prettybird · 16/01/2019 19:40

Ds had dismissed Aberdeen as too remote and isolated (and had already dismissed St Andrews after going to its Open Day as too remote and isolated and like a giant board school all of which is true and I loved my time there ) but went to the Open Day under duress and ended up loving both the courses and the feel of the place Smile

Guess where he is studying now?! Wink

He's doing PIR - although he also chose and has continued both Economics and Philosophy in his 1st and 2nd semesters.

prettybird · 16/01/2019 19:42

Autocorrect fail: boarding school Blush

ComeOnGordon · 16/01/2019 20:17

That’s great that he’s happy there Smile but she’s right that it’s too isolated for getting back home - there’s no flights from there to anywhere near us. So she’d have a long journey to get home.
Stirling was on her radar but not sure why she didn’t apply there

ComeOnGordon · 16/01/2019 20:18

I told dd we weren’t posh enough to go to St Andrews Wink

readsalotgirl63 · 16/01/2019 23:08

Welcome comeongordon - dd is at Glasgow and loving it - I also studied there hundreds of years ago so good luck to your dd.

I'd also second having a look at Dundee - dd didn't go to the open day and wasn't very keen but put it as her 5th choice. She got an unconditional offer and she ( and dh and I) were really sold on it at the offer holder's day. In the end dd firmed the conditional offer from Glasgow and put Dundee as her insurance rather than Strathclyde - the offer holder day at Strathclyde was dire by comparison to both Glasgow and Dundee

Dundee has good transport connections to Edinburgh and Glasgow for flights to europe

Smeeeeeee · 20/01/2019 10:11

That's fab, Aurea Smile

My dd so far has an unconditional from Glasgow and Stirling.

Still waiting for St Andrews and Edinburgh.

Aurea · 20/01/2019 11:45

Sneeeee
Thanks!

Congrats on the great offers. Hopefully the wait for the others isn't too long drawn out.
