Ds is in bed 😂😂😂

Mind you first day back with nursery, I feel the need to go to bed too.

Bumply · 16/08/2018 13:14

Ds2 given the go ahead to stick with AH Maths despite D at Higher.

Hoping this is the right decision and spurs him to do better this year (ie a decent amount of revision this time)

weegiemum · 17/08/2018 16:59

Well, S5 has kicked in. Ds reckons he has hours of homework this weekend - maths, physics, English and "oh yeah, I'd better do some art too". Plus tidying his room and building a new set of drawers and a shoe cabinet (for his extensive trainer collection). Ah well, at least he won't be wandering the streets!

howabout · 17/08/2018 17:09

Now I'm going to have to ask DD2 about HW weegie Grin

She and her sister are still catching up on the holiday gossip.

WaxOnFeckOff · 17/08/2018 19:18

DS2 back to S6 on Monday, I have no idea if any of his uniform still fits, he's lost 2 and half stone and grown an inch and a half over the summer. He has however made a bit of effort over the summer and he's read Ulysses, Portrait of the Artist as a Young man and Finnegans Wake over the holidays for his AH English. Bedroom is still a shit tip.

Lidlfix · 18/08/2018 09:59

DD3 starting S5 on Monday doing 5 Highers - English, History, Modies, RMPS and PE. PE was a last minute change as she only got a C for Nat 5 Maths so Higher likely to be a stretch too far. She learned the hard way not taking all additional time for her dyslexia in N5s and realises I was not just being a pushy, teacher mum.

DD4 doing 7 Nat 5s so I think this might be a year of stress management. I am almost immune now...

howabout · 18/08/2018 10:48

Mine have just done DD1 Nat 6 and DD2 Nat 5. Hands down the most stressful 6 months of my life from January prelims till results day.

Struggling to muster the necessary level of parental enthusiasm for Uni applications and S5 atm. (Poor DD 3 is having to cope with being split into a composite for P3/2, which is no big deal but she could do with a bit more tea and sympathy than she has been getting).

Lidlfix · 18/08/2018 17:11

Awh Howabout the dreaded composite Sad DD3 March Birthday DD4 Feb so we frequently had that form of joy... was always worse for DD4 as she was young for year (very bright due to associated osmosis from 3 Dsis) but put with year below. Really experienced practitioners could manage the depth of differentiation required but not all can.

Groovee · 18/08/2018 17:24

Ds can't move maths classes. So he's creating a theory notebook and I have found a tutor.

The head of maths has been made aware of my unhappiness and has agreed to keep on top of the situation.

First week back has gone ok.

weegiemum · 20/08/2018 10:52

Ds spent enough time on homework I think, though he was finishing physics at 10 last night! I think it will take him a wee bit just to get into the stride of S5. His bedroom is now a thing of beauty!! And on Friday he found out he got a band1 for maths, so he's feeling quite confident about it for higher.
He's also feeling quite inspired by his big sister - she is about to start at Glasgow School of Art and he reckons if she could get in to her design course then he can do it with architecture. Nice to see him aiming for something!
Now trying to get dd2 in s4 to work!

WickedGoodDoge · 22/08/2018 17:27

DS had his S5 sorting out Highers morning today and they have OK’d his dropping Engineering Science for Computing Science. Apparently quite a few students were asking if they could do 6 Highers and the school was saying, “Please don’t, that’s a bad idea”. DS was not one of these students. Grin

howabout · 22/08/2018 21:35

I don't really understand why anyone would choose 6 Highers. Anything that could need more than 5 also doesn't take students till after S6 (Law, Medicine, English Uni, Art School, Music or the most common one of wanting to leave options open). Wicked your DS sounds eminently sensible. Heartening to hear he is still firming up on options. So are mine.

weegiemum · 22/08/2018 23:11

Yea, 6 highers is insane (imh - teacher - o). There's just no need.

WickedGoodDoge · 23/08/2018 12:43

Seems crazy to me too. Risky with no added benefit that I can see. I don’t know whether it is students wanting to take 6 or deluded parents telling their children to ask to take 6. Bonkers.

eatinglesschocolate · 23/08/2018 12:57

The only person I know who took 6 lost her chance at Scottish medicine offers because one dropped to a B. She'd been a straight A scholarship girl with the best work experience of all. She had to go abroad to study it.

Groovee · 24/08/2018 13:11

We have a half day on a Friday. Ds only has one class but is doing skills force classes which he's finding useful.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/08/2018 15:13

Dd has been getting on well so far, today was a blip as she stayed at home to sort some things out for me, but her school are very understanding.
She's enjoying her classes and the trains haven't been too awful yet, though the sooner we move in, the better.

Alittewornout · 24/08/2018 16:16

Dd been back for 3 days and it seems ok so far. She likes all of her teachers and although a really hard worker likes to moan that she hates school and can switch from being really sweet to a right grump!! The joys of being parent to a teenager and going through the menopause it’s not the best combination!🙈

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/08/2018 16:28

Dd does the sweet/grump thing too, with no warning.
She chats to me nicely, then ten seconds later is in a vile moodConfused

I open her door a crack and throw biscuits in.
That way she either cheers up, or doesn't but will be too busy eating said biscuits to come near me.
(This can be repeated for daysGrin)

GrinWill def try this Brillo! It’s the unpredictability that’s the challenge isn’t it?!

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/08/2018 17:14

Yes!
It's never anything to do with me, but I'm the only one here so I get it.
Biscuits are my shield.Grin

My son has just taken 6 Highers in fifth year at a state school and got 5As and a B. The B was a crash Higher (Mods) as well.

It was hard work but he's ambitious and wants to apply for Law at Oxford. This year he's doing three AHs (one of which is a total crash (RMPS) - doesn't even have a Nat 5 in it) which is either crazy or super smart. We will find out this time next year. Smile

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/08/2018 17:47

Wow, good for him though.
My Dd's boyfriend did 5 in 5th year and got all A's, he had an unconditional to Glasgow which he's taken up.
He did 3 advanced in 6th yr, 2As and a C.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/08/2018 17:49

State school here too, one which I pulled my Dd out of for being shit!

Joining this thread. DD is in S5, doing 5 Highers: Biology, Chemistry, Maths, English and History. She did well at Nat 5 with 8 As including band 1s for Maths and French, and in the 80s for all other subjects.
She says she's not enjoying history and wants to see if she can switch to French, timetable permitting. She hopes to get 5 As at Higher as she would like to apply for medical school. I think she would catch up Ok as she has always done well at French. Is it likely to be too late to switch? She's going to ask at school tomorrow.
