Definitely links!

My gran’s Ne’erday steak pie was the best meal of the year, fond memories.

howabout · 24/12/2017 14:34

Pork links here and definitely no kidneys.

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2017 14:49

Kidneys?
Nooooooo, not In the NYD pie, just steak, links and gravy, puff pastry top, no bottom and must be rectangular, not round.

No links. That's just bizarre :o. Sure we had a similar post last year but until then I'd never heard of a steak pie with sausages in it.

The rest of your description is spot on though. Served with buttery mash, carrots and peas (and roasties if I can be bothered)

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 24/12/2017 15:43

I'm West coast, so definitely links. DH East coast says categorically no! I miss having sausages in my steak pie!

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2017 16:28

So links is a west coast thing, not east coast, what about the middle?
My friend in Aberdeen swears there is no such pie tradition there.

NO LINKS

Rhodiolia · 24/12/2017 16:32

I'm east coast, definitely no link sausages in steak pie - and none in stovies either!

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 24/12/2017 16:32

I don't know! DH thinks it weird that we put sausages in steak pie, but his mum puts mince in soup Shock

JingsMahBucket · 24/12/2017 16:33

Do you slice up the links or leave them whole?

Abouttoblow · 24/12/2017 16:33

Definitely links!
My Scottish mother still makes hers in my grannies ashet (? spelling). The white enamel dish with blue round the edge. Must be 80 years old, the dish that is Smile

IHaveBrilloHair · 24/12/2017 16:34

Mince in soup?
What is this madness.

NotCornflakes · 24/12/2017 16:38

East coast born and raised and I've never heard of putting links in a steak pie either.

Readermumof3 · 24/12/2017 16:40

I'm a Fifer born and bred and have never heard of this in my life, links or no links!! Steak in steak pie only I don't eat steak pie though DH makes steak pie with...steak 😂

MrsJayy · 24/12/2017 16:41

I am central near the west we all put links in, but my friend lives in Falkirk she doesn't we had a drunkendebate about sausage a few hogmanays ago.

MrsJayy · 24/12/2017 16:44

The sausage was to bulk out the pie my nana once told me so a tiny bit of steak and the rest sausage.

Maggiewashere · 24/12/2017 17:17

Midlothian here - never heard of sausages in a steak pie. That wouldn't appeal to me at all.

Groovee · 24/12/2017 18:37

Edinburgh, no sausages at all! Just steak!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/12/2017 19:45

No links in mine - but I am forrin (English) living in Scotland, so was not brought up to do it proper.

I made and froze the filling a couple of weeks ago. I casseroled beef cheeks with bacon, onion, carrot and red wine, for about 7.5 hours, until the meat just fell apart, took the meat out, then blitzed the stock, carrots and onion into a gravy. It tastes gorgeous.

MsHomeSlice · 24/12/2017 20:29

the steak and sausage pie is creeping over to the East coast....they have had them in tesco for a couple of years now

I don't think it is decent tbh. Just beef and onions in mine.

Bloomed · 24/12/2017 20:32

Do you fry off the links first or do they cook in the pie?

MrsJayy · 24/12/2017 22:06

I brown mine or the go a bit soggy and it gives me the heave.

Superjaggy · 24/12/2017 23:16

I live in the north east and I've never heard of the tradition of having steak pie on the 1st... I've never put sausages in a steak pie either. I feel like I've been missing out...
