God no, just steak, gravy and pastry. I got one once that had, unknownst to me, pork links in it. Why? Steak pie, not steak and sausage pie!

Notreallyarsed · 24/12/2017 23:23

When I moved from East to West I thought someone was having me on about links in steak pie! No links for us (DP is an Angus boy) and definitely no sausage in stovies!

dotdotdotmustdash · 24/12/2017 23:24

I'm an East-coaster and had never heard of links in a steak pie until I moved to the West coast. I had dinner at my DP's Grandmother's house and was horrified to find a layer of sliced sausage under the pastry!

I actually like it though, but I am a huge fan of sausage casserole.

ParkheadParadise · 24/12/2017 23:31

Beef links in the Steak pie I'm in Glasgow.

swipeleft · 24/12/2017 23:33

I'm an east coaster and have lived on the west for last 10 years and I've never heard of sausages in steak pie! Did think it's weird when I first had stovies here and it was sausages though, I've always made mine with beef.

I like black pudding in my steak pie. Perfect.

StylishDuck · 24/12/2017 23:54

It's definitely a west coast/east coast thing.

My DF reckons it's because people in the West were poorer so couldn't afford as much steak and had to bulk it out with sausages Grin

My family are west coasters and DH's are east coasters. No sausages at MIL's on NYD but definitely always sausages at my DM's on the 2nd.

Abouttoblow · 24/12/2017 23:58

Don't forget the NYD pot of peas....with gallons of vinegar Wink

Catinthecorner · 25/12/2017 00:26

Isn’t stovies with sausage a panackelty?

Olddear · 25/12/2017 13:31

Beef links. I steam them a bit first then into the slow cooker with the steak. It's the boys!!!

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2017 13:43

Peas with vinegar?
Never heard of that.
I make stovies with corned beef, my friend's husband taught me, he's from Montrose.

Peas need vinegar. I make stovies with square sausage.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2017 14:05

I was actually born and brought up in the north east of England, but Mum from Ayrshire so I've picked up traditions from all over.
What kind of peas are they? Like mushy peas or frozen garden peas, I need to try it this year.

I’m from Aberdeenshire- no sausages in steak pie and had never heard of the steak pie for New Years until I moved to Edinburgh. Stovies are made with beef, not sausage, southern stovies are totally different from proper ones, which are made with leftovers from a roast.

IHaveBrilloHair · 25/12/2017 14:09

It's odd, as soon as Christmas is over here the supermarkets are full of steak pies, whole aisles of them, all the butcher's too and often bakers, yet the tradition doesn't spread to Aberdeen, what about further north?

ItsNachoCheese · 25/12/2017 14:19

It has to have beef links involved and there will never ever be a shred of kidney or any other organs in my steak pie ever thats just 😷

ItsNachoCheese · 25/12/2017 14:20

Im slap bang in the middle of scotland and can remember links being in the pie from a young age

k2p2k2tog · 25/12/2017 16:34

Grew up Edinburgh, parents both Fife. Never did the steak pie on New Year's Day thing and still don't do it now but would never think of putting sausages in a steak pie.

Abouttoblow · 25/12/2017 23:23

Mushy peas normally cooked with a "ham end" as my mum calls it then loads of vinegar when you plate them up. Amazing.
Stovies definitely made with square sausage. My mum brought me 2 massive blocks when she came down this week Grin

MrsAmaretto · 27/12/2017 00:02

No links in a steak pie & definitely a NYD tradition, but I’m from highland Perthshire & the family friend we went to was from Edinburgh originally.

Now living in Shetland and there seems to be no Steak pie tradition on NYD here

OOAOML · 27/12/2017 14:45

Perthshire-raised, ours came from the butcher and no sausages in a steak pie Shock

Impressed at all those making them!

IHaveBrilloHair · 27/12/2017 15:42

There'd be anarchy here if I didn't make it, I've not been well though and I'm still not really so this might be the year I teach Dd to make it.

Abouttoblow I haven't had peas in vinegar for years, I was brought up not far from Glasgow and my grandad used to make it every NYD along with Steak pie and links and Home Made Ginger Wine, ahh the memories!

Abouttoblow · 27/12/2017 19:49

Nomoretears I'm currently having a glass of my mum's home made ginger wine and home made shortbread Smile
Tomorrow's breakfast is a roll and square sausage and a fried tattie scone! Love it when my mum comes down to visit.

Nomoretears56 · 27/12/2017 21:02

Abouttoblow, I can still remember the smell of the the ginger wine!! I've got square sausage and tattie scones too, a wee visit to the the Baker in the morning and I'll have the rolls too but nothing beats a good old "glesga roll"...... Yum Smile

cdtaylornats · 27/12/2017 21:58

Clackmannanshire has steak, beef links and kidneys
