Well?
Definitely links here, beef links.

Never heard of putting sausages in a steak pie (NE). In fact I've just noticed that there are hundreds of steak pies in Tesco this year supposedly for NY dinner.

I've never known steak pie as a tradition for NY dinner - we always had roast beef as kids and I still do that today.

With links!

Happy New Year Ihavebrillohair. You're pie looks fab and I am very jealous of your festive tweety bird.

In answer to the how to cook the links question, I break mine up and brown them with the onions before adding the steak. By the time it's all been braising for about 4 hours they sort of melt into gravy.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/01/2018 14:52

Thank you, it's Le Creuset, I love Le creuset, the dish is too.
I half the links then brown and add the steak, and it just sort of melds together so similar, I've used six links and a smallish pack of braising steak, I just go by eye really.

Can I just take a moment to mourn my steak pie took my steak out the freezer last night took out fridge this morning it was rank rotten having roast chicken instead Sad BTW yours looks lovely

WaxOnFeckOff · 01/01/2018 15:31

Oh dear MrsJayy! :( Where did you get it from or was it home made? We had ours yesterday, it was delicious.

There is enough left for two today so that's DH and I sorted. Teens are having Pizza - though it should have been eaten by the 30th - looks and smells fine.

ChristmasEnthusiast · 01/01/2018 16:19

Steak links definitely in a steak pie.
1 sausage per person + one for luck, browned then added to the pie dish, same as the steak. I've attempted to make for the first time this year, and mourning the fact that mum took her tweetie bird when she moved to the other side of the country plus 2 ferry trips.

FairfaxAikman · 01/01/2018 16:22

It's only a proper steak and sausage pie if there is sausage seasoning added to the gravy as well.
Anything else is a poor imitation.

FairfaxAikman · 01/01/2018 16:24

And I don't think it's an easy v west coast thing either - my family have been butchers in Fife for three centuries and we were definitely making steak and sausage pies 100 years ago.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/01/2018 17:13

What is sausage seasoning?
I've never heard of it.
Christmas, buy one, I love my wee pie bird.

FairfaxAikman · 01/01/2018 18:51

It's whatever seasoning they have added to the sausages (whatever recipe they've used). Same stuff goes through the gravy.

TheScottishPlay · 01/01/2018 18:56

No links in an Angus steak pie.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/01/2018 18:58

Oh right Fairfax
I thought it was perhaps a thing you could buy, like chicken salt in Australia.

No links in an Angus steak pie

For sure.

WeAllHaveWings · 01/01/2018 19:05

We’ve just finished our steak pie with pork links, butcher had the little links in specifically for going in steak pies. Cooked the meat/sausages on Saturday and had as a pie today. Lovely.

Abouttoblow · 01/01/2018 19:38

My mum gets the seasoning from the butcher when she buys the steak. They call it steak pie spice. The butcher puts a couple of spoonfuls in a bag. Think they also use it in beef olives.

ArbitraryName · 01/01/2018 19:43

Ah the annual MN sausages or not thread. I’m in the no sausages camp.

IHaveBrilloHair · 01/01/2018 19:46

Oooh, beef olives, love them too.

popcornpaws · 04/01/2018 00:09

My family are from Glasow, it was always steak pie, no sausages at midnight on hogmany to sober you up so you could continue to party well into new years day!

Jaxinthebox · 04/01/2018 00:19

Im a west coaster - although my Dad was an East Coaster... I had steak pie with links growing up, but Im not a fan, Id rather have just steak and gravy.

Stovies is made with slice sausage, what is this nonsense with proper meat? Thats Lancashire hot pot to me.

Snowman41 · 04/01/2018 00:29

East coast here. Always have steak pie on the 1st but I have never heard of sausage going in it Shock

Littlewhistle · 04/01/2018 08:13

Never heard of stoves made with sliced sausages. I always thought it was to use up left over roast beef although my mother always made it with corned beef.

Notreallyarsed · 04/01/2018 11:54

I make mine with corned beef Little

Lessstressedhemum · 04/01/2018 12:04

Steak pie has beef links and stovies are made with slice! There is no discussion about that in Ayrshire, it's just the way it is. In fact, I'm making stovies this afternoon.
