Orange Walk

Glasgow city centre ground to a halt today, with most of the streets closed to traffic between 9am and 4pm, so that a bunch of bigots could celebrate a war that happened over 300 years ago. There were loads of tourists in town, taking photos and video of the "parade", not knowing the background. And worse than the marchers, are the hangers-on - many of them drunk and with small children who are waving flags for something they know nothing about. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be Scottish. Angry

Love a bit of Ted!

squoosh · 01/07/2017 21:25

the hangers on, pissed out of their heids at 11am , bottle of buckie swinging, baby in pram dressed head to toe in Rangers strip. Ugh!

It's grim isn't it. Pissed, sunburnt and draped in a Union Jack.

Stay classy Dumbarton Road.

PlayingSardines · 01/07/2017 21:25

Perhaps MNHQ would like a brief history of the raison-d'être of the Orange Order, because 'fuckers' is in fact one of the politer descriptors I could have come up with.

Did you note that the Orange Order asked the DUP to put their god-given right to match down the Garvaghy Road right at the top of the Tory agenda? And that seven of the ten DUP MPs are Orange members or members of allied lodges?

MeanAger · 01/07/2017 21:29

baby in pram dressed head to toe in Rangers strip.

You mean they don't do the red white and blue jojo bows, crochetted blankets, headbands, hair ribbons, dummy clips, rara skirts, bibs, bandanas and rattles too? There is a full fucking cottage industry in those here.

squoosh · 01/07/2017 21:30

Well as Ian Paisley Jr said the other week, 'the future's orange'...

GherkinSnatch · 01/07/2017 21:45

And there was me thinking it was going to be a thread asking for tips on taking the kids for a fun day out.

The only positive thing to come out of the ridiculous marching is that I now have that Father Ted meme Grin

Noofly · 01/07/2017 22:02

I can only assume that MNHQ are too far removed from here to really understand about the Orange marches. Bigoted fuckers. I moved to Scotland nearly 30 years ago and was horrified to discover them. I'm even more horrified to see that they are still going on in this day and age. Bigoted fuckers.

Noofly · 01/07/2017 22:03

Bigoted fuckers refers to the participants, not MNHQ!

SwiftAnchor · 01/07/2017 22:04

They are fuckers. An absolute disgrace that this is allowed. The other year when they had their 'orange fest' and George square was closed for it I wrote letters of complaint to everyone I could think of as the taxi drivers day out for sick kids wasn't allowed at George Sq any more but this shite was.

Apparently it's their right Angry

squoosh · 01/07/2017 22:11

I can only assume there is a number of high ranking police and Council members who are supporters of the Orange Order.

PoppyPopcorn · 01/07/2017 22:56

Just AWFUL. Edinburgh banned these marches in the 1980s, pity Glasgow doesn't have the guts to do likewise. My children are growing up untainted by this which is great - my 9 year old saw the coverage on telly and asked what it was all about. Bigots and idiots, the lot of them.

Nyx · 01/07/2017 23:22

So MNHQ had 'a few reports' and edited the title. I agree with the pp who said that the walks themselves are provocative. Wonder who was outraged enough to get the title changed.

sweetkitty · 01/07/2017 23:31

Totally bigoted fuckers is being polite about them. It's anti-Catholic hatred. It's 2017 FFS it's a stupid bloody battle that happened over 350 years ago, stupid fuckerz the lot of them. They bring shame to our country.

squoosh · 01/07/2017 23:43

I always have a bit of a jolt when marching season rolls around. I've lived here for over a decade and never once suffered any sectarian abuse, but there's clearly a vein of it running through the culture in the West of Scotland. Makes me wonder if people have met me and then spoken or thought of me in a derogatory manner afterwards.

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 01/07/2017 23:47

They deliberately walk past the Catholic churches in our town. It's just goady behaviour and it makes me feel sick. Don't get me wrong, there are gone marches In our town too, and they piss me off just. as much

ThePlatypusAlwaysTriumphs · 01/07/2017 23:48

Gone= hibs

prettybird · 02/07/2017 08:54

I agree that the generous interpretation is that MNHQ, in their cosseted London HQ, don't realise how the original title was indeed mild compared to the hate mongers that the Orange Walks represent. SadAngry They really should educate themselves. Hmm

A couple of years ago, I happened to need to go to a shop on the bottom end of the Saltmarket just as they were dispersing from Glasgow Green I know, I was stupid but I'd forgotten about the fucking March : my skin was crawling as I walked through the crowd. SadHmm

They are a stain on our city Angry

Notreallyarsed · 02/07/2017 09:54

Aye we get the Hibs walks too Platypus and they're as bad. All of it should be confined to history, it's so incendiary and unnecessary.

ItsNachoCheese · 02/07/2017 10:00

There is 73 bands marching in alloa next saturday. We arent even that big a town its going to be bedlam most of the town is getting shut

trixymalixy · 02/07/2017 10:55

The orange walks make me ashamed to be Scottish too. Sad I hadn't realised they were banned in Edinburgh. I wish they would ban them in Glasgow too.

dementedma · 02/07/2017 11:02

Why are Clax council allowing this nacho? 73 bands in Alloa will cause chaos!

ItsNachoCheese · 02/07/2017 11:16

dementedma i have no idea why. General consensus of local people is its unwelcome here. But it makes it okay as if there are church services on they will stop playing while walking past Hmm its estimating 8-10000 people it really will be chaos. Most of the main roads around town are shut all day its a disgrace
