Orange Walk

Glasgow city centre ground to a halt today, with most of the streets closed to traffic between 9am and 4pm, so that a bunch of bigots could celebrate a war that happened over 300 years ago. There were loads of tourists in town, taking photos and video of the "parade", not knowing the background. And worse than the marchers, are the hangers-on - many of them drunk and with small children who are waving flags for something they know nothing about. Sometimes I'm ashamed to be Scottish. Angry

We went to the park with DS last night then went the long way home without realising there had been a march on. The roads were strewn with rubbish, drunken men were walking about drinking and drunk women were shrieking and waving their arses at passing cars and waving their union jack cowboy hats.

How anyone can think this is culture is beyond me.

We're heading away over the 12th as the bonfire near us is higher than any of the neighbouring buildings and its just going to be carnage.

HLBug · 02/07/2017 11:24

I used in live opposite a lodge in west end of Glasgow- band practice was at 2pm every Sunday, just as my hangovers were generally really starting to kick in. I always remember that lodge 'hosting' a Belfast lodge for one of the bigger marches - grown men drunk and skipping up and down the street with flags like little kids. Ridiculous.

DoctorDonnaNoble · 02/07/2017 11:27

I don't think Edinburgh has banned them. There was an orange march during the festival a couple of years ago. I know because we had to change our pub plans due to the threats and looks in my direction (I'm very ginger). Hate the sectarian twats.
Took great delight in the scene in Trainspotting 2 where Mark and SickBoy rip them off.

KatoPotato · 02/07/2017 11:29

'They kinda celebrate something, nae cunt can remember'

I like this...

They can get away with anything. I remember when they wrecked Victoria Road on the Southside. Some of the businesses never recovered from it. They rampaged drunk in Queens Park, puking and pissing and verbally abusing everyone in their path, including children. This was in an area known to have a lot of Irish catholic residents

It's like the white supremacists being allowed to rampage through Harlem

Notreallyarsed · 02/07/2017 15:22

Kato that's brilliant!

MeanAger · 02/07/2017 15:30

But sure as long as they had a good day, what does any of that matter Hmm

NoddysBell · 02/07/2017 15:34

I'm in Liverpool and the bastards frequently march here too. Drunken arseholes falling about all over the place and causing trouble in pubs. Utter cunts, the lot of them.

TheBogQueen · 02/07/2017 15:35

Speaking as an English person who has lived in Scotland fur over a decade, the Orange walks are certainly an eye-opener. Confused Perhaps the government's support fir the DUP has reenergised them...

I think the council and the police should just charge them shitloads of money to have the walk.

BenLui · 02/07/2017 15:40

I'm Scottish and Protestant and these people don't represent me at all.

The marches are appalling - they should be banned.

And though I rarely swear I agree Agent that "Orange Walk Fuckers" was an entire appropriate title.

DanyellasDonkey · 02/07/2017 15:51

So glad I live in a part of Scotland where this has no significance. DH's family are from Glasgow and I must appear a total ignoramus as the dates, who supports what etc mean absolutely nothing to me.

I honestly didn't know if the orange supporters were catholic or protestant Shock

AmIthatbloodycold · 02/07/2017 17:44

Well the title is showing as fuckers now.

They have occasionally marched in our town. Bussed in, spread their hatred, then bussed back to whatever shithole they come from

All that polyester, chest puffing shite

The council let it go ahead only because they had no grounds to stop it.

Makes me ashamed

MeanAger · 02/07/2017 17:47

It's not showing fuckers on my phone.

Sad just says orange walk for me.

Superjaggy · 02/07/2017 18:11

It's not showing as Fuckers on my phone either, but I'd rather it did. Just chipping in with my support for all your comments on this thread. I was brought up as a Protestant in the north east of Scotland but had never heard of orange walks until I moved to Glasgow to study in the 1990s. I've since had my day spoiled by similar marches in Inverness though, so it's definitely not something that's going away any time soon. I detest the way they march through areas that are mainly regarded as Catholic - it's so utterly disrespectful. I also agree with pp's that the DUP coalition shite will probably lead to more and more sectarian hatred in the areas where it already exists. Vile.

TheLuminaries · 02/07/2017 18:16

Kato that is superb, I have had a happy wee wander through Robert Florence's Facebook page - good find Grin

Megbert · 02/07/2017 18:18

People are very prickly about these things so HQ are at a rock and a hard place.

Someone demanded a thread be deleted on craicnet because the OP said fleggers. :o

Anyway, I agree OP. I'm in NI and marching season is always an interesting time of year.

MoreProseccoNow · 02/07/2017 18:21

I'm from Glasgow & no longer live there. I'm utterly mortified that in my home town, a city that I consider friendly, multi-cultural & cosmopolitan- that this abomination still occurs.

It's a national embarrassment, a disgrace & a poor reflection on Glasgow.

I can't understand how legislation about inciting hatred has not been used to ban these hideous marches. The Lodges should pay the policing costs, or they should be sent to a field in the middle of nowhere. Disgusting behaviour.

Broccolirevolution · 02/07/2017 18:24

Hate the walk. Don't know how anyone can justify it. I wonder if there are any orange mumsnetters Grin getting all angry cos their kid isn't first flute and they'd been accused of playing out of tune and not looking like they hate Catholics enough.

Come on Orange mumsnetters - show your selves! Justify your hatred!

FlaviaAlbia · 02/07/2017 19:51

Tbf, I'm in NI and some of my (thankfully) distant relations love the orange order and their marchs. I can remember the glee of them dressing my little brother up in a sash on one duty visit.

They're not well educated, don't work, live in a very insular area of Belfast and are the kind of people who'd say, oh he was such a nice fella, but catholic you know.

AgentProvocateur · 02/07/2017 21:00

Interesting that none of the people who complained about the provocative title have come onto the thread to defend the walk... Hmm

I was that unfortunate OP under a different username! Grin

Indeed!

Marvellous unionist and anti-independence marches. Whats not to like.
